RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and Knoop hardness number (KHN) of a novel experimental light-cured resin cement (HL). Eighteen flat dentin surfaces of human molars were polished using #600 SiC paper and bonded to CAD/CAM resin blocks with the respective resin cements and composites: HL, Panavia V5 (PV), and Clearfil AP-X (AP). All specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h and 7 days. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) observations were performed to evaluate filler morphology and to detect the elements. The resin cements had a significant effect on the immediate µTBS (F = 22.59, p < 0.05) and after water storage µTBS (F = 22.83, p < 0.05). Significant differences (p < 0.05) in the KHN between the tested materials were observed, and HL indicated the highest KHN when compared with PV. HL showed a combination of the regular-shaped filler and spherical-shaped filler within the matrix. Silicon was detected in HL from the EDX evaluation. HL exhibited better bonding performance and polymerization, which may have contributed to the improvement of the adhesive strength.

RESUMO

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been widely used, particularly in display applications. OLEDs are easily degraded without stringent encapsulation owing to their susceptibility to water vapor and oxygen. Therefore, establishing an effective protection method for these devices is essential. In this study, we demonstrate the device protection performance and improvement in color purity by introducing CaF2/ZnS multilayered films on a top-emitting inverted-type OLED (iOLED), which was originally intended to act as a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). To test the protection performance of each dielectric layer, conventional bottom-emitting OLEDs (cOLEDs) with and without single layers of CaF2 and ZnS were investigated for comparison. All OLEDs were stored in an atmosphere without stringent encapsulation, such as a cover glass. The luminescence area of cOLEDs without the dielectric film decreased by more than 90% after 3 days of fabrication. In contrast, the dark-spot formation was moderated after the same period for the dielectric single-layer deposited cOLEDs. Notably, the iOLED with DBR completely preserved the emitting area even after 2 months of fabrication. This suggests that DBR acted as a protective film for the organic layer, whereas the inverted structure also contributed to reducing the degradation of air- and moisture-sensitive materials.

RESUMO

The microplastic that pollutes the ocean is a serious problem around the world. The bioplastic consisting of biopolymers which is degraded in nature, is one of the strategies to solve this problem. Although the bioplastics consisting of protein, polysaccharide, polylactic acid, etc., have been reported, which consist of DNA, one of the most important materials in the genetic process, have not been reported to the best of our knowledge. In addition, a large amount of DNA-containing materials, such as salmon milts, is discarded as industrial waste around the world. Therefore, we demonstrated the preparation of a bioplastic consisting of salmon milt DNA. The DNA plastic was prepared by the immersion of a DNA pellet in a formaldehyde (HCHO) solution and heating. As a result, the water-stable DNA plastics were obtained at the HCHO concentration of 20% or more. Particularly, the DNA plastic with a 25% HCHO treatment showed water-insoluble, thermally stable, and highly mechanical properties. These are due to the formation of a three-dimensional network via the crosslinking reaction between the DNA chains. In addition, since DNA in plastic possesses the double-stranded structure, these plastics effectively accumulated the DNA intercalator, such as ethidium bromide. Furthermore, the DNA plastics indicated a biodegradable property in a nuclease-containing aqueous solution and the biodegradable stability was able to be controlled by the HCHO concentration. Therefore, salmon milt DNA has shown the potential to be a biodegradable plastic.

RESUMO

Plants in the genus Curcuma have been widely used as traditional medicines in Asian countries. These plants contain bioactive compounds with neuroprotective properties or activities that increase neural stem cells (NSCs) and neurons. However, bioactive components in Curcuma that promote the differentiation of NSCs into astrocytes have not yet been reported. Here, the effects of Curcuma extracts on the in vitro differentiation of embryonic stem-cell-derived NSCs were evaluated. The extract of the wild turmeric, Curcuma aromatica, strongly promoted the differentiation of NSCs into astrocytes. Bioassay-guided isolation yielded coronarins C (1) and D (2), as well as (E)-labda-8(17),12-diene-15,16-dial (3) as the bioactive compounds. Coronarin D (2) markedly promoted the differentiation of NSCs into astrocytes up to approximately 4 times (3.64 ± 0.48) and increased the expression level of GFAP at the mRNA and protein level, while compounds 1 and 3 exhibited only weak effects, suggesting that the 15-hydroxy-Δ12-γ-lactone moiety is important for bioactivity. Moreover, compound 2 increased the number of pSTAT3-positive cells, suggesting that compound 2 promoted astrocytic differentiation through JAK/STAT signaling pathway.

RESUMO

This descriptive study used a qualitative inductive approach to investigate the subjective experiences and perceptions of people with schizophrenia living in the community during times of difficulty and how they coped. We conducted semi-structured interviews with nine community-dwelling people with schizophrenia and used the KJ method developed by Kawakita Jiro to structure the data obtained. We identified 10 symbols with his method: bewilderment at the onset; helplessness and longing for death; solitude linked to death; precarious daily life; relationships at risk; fear of being stigmatized; pillars of emotional support; will to overcome; hope to never give up; and living with the illness. The results suggest that community mental health nurses should provide support so their patients can continue to have pillars of emotional support and the will to overcome difficulties, as well as continue to use their coping methods, even when experiencing many difficulties. It is important that nurses understand and share in their patients' difficult experiences and hopes when providing support toward their recovery.

RESUMO

Piglets aged approximately 50 days exhibited diarrhea and wasting. Multiple white foci were detected in the colon of a dead piglet; histopathological findings revealed multifocal ulcers and crypt abscesses with Entamoeba trophozoites and gram-negative bacilli in the piglet. These pathogens were identified as Entamoeba polecki subtype 3 and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, respectively. Numerous E. polecki subtype 3 trophozoites were located on the edge of the ulcerative and necrotic lesions in the lamina propria. Crypt abscesses were associated with S. Typhimurium. These results suggest that E. polecki subtype 3 caused multifocal ulcerative colitis accompanied by crypt abscesses with S. Typhimurium in the piglet. This study is the first report of colitis with E. polecki subtype 3 and S. Typhimurium coinfection.

RESUMO

Piceatannol (3,3',4',5-trans-tetrahydroxystilbene) is a polyphenolic compound abundant in the seeds of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis). Piceatannol is an analogue of resveratrol (3,4',5-trans-trihydroxystilbene) and shares the structural motif and biological activities such as activation of SIRT1. Several studies have shown that piceatannol is more potent than resveratrol. In this study, we examined the effects of piceatannol on neural stem cell differentiation into astrocytes compared with those of resveratrol. At a concentration of 2.5 µM, piceatannol promoted astrocyte differentiation, while resveratrol had no effect at this concentration. Furthermore, we found that oral administration of piceatannol increased the number of astrocytes in the brains of adult mice, while resveratrol administration showed no effects. These results suggest that piceatannol has a superior effect to resveratrol in promoting astrocyte differentiation.

RESUMO

We fabricated zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) with Al-doped ZnO (AZO) seed layers and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) employed the ZnO NRs between a TiO2 photoelectrode and a fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO) electrode. The growth rate of the NRs was strongly dependent on the seed layer conditions, i.e., thickness, Al dopant and annealing temperature. Attaining a large particle size with a high crystallinity of the seed layer was vital to the well-aligned growth of the NRs. However, the growth was less related to the substrate material (glass and FTO coated glass). With optimized ZnO NRs, the DSSCs exhibited remarkably enhanced photovoltaic performance, because of the increase of dye absorption and fast carrier transfer, which, in turn, led to improved efficiency. The cell with the ZnO NRs grown on an AZO seed layer annealed at 350 °C showed a short-circuit current density (JSC) of 12.56 mA/cm², an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.70 V, a fill factor (FF) of 0.59 and a power conversion efficiency (PCE, η) of 5.20% under air mass 1.5 global (AM 1.5G) illumination of 100 mW/cm².

RESUMO

We prepared Ag thin films on SiO2/Si substrates, with and without a subnanometer-thick organic interface layer of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). The surface morphology and electrical resistivity of these films were investigated and compared. Ag films grown with an MPTMS layer were relatively flat, resulting in a smaller critical thickness. This was probably because migration of Ag atoms on the substrate was suppressed by interactions between the Ag atoms and the thiol moiety. The deposition rate and terminating group of the organic interface layer also influenced the Ag film growth.

RESUMO

The step-flow growth mode is used to fabricate Si and Ge nanowires with a width of 3.5 nm and a thickness of one atomic layer (0.3 nm) by self-assembly. Alternating deposition of Ge and Si results in the formation of a nanowire superlattice covering the whole surface. One atomic layer of Bi terminating the surface is used to distinguish between the elements Si and Ge. A difference in apparent height is measured in scanning tunneling microscopy images for Si and Ge. Also, different kinds of two-dimensional Si/Ge nanostructures like alternating Si and Ge nanorings having a width of 5-10 nm were grown.

RESUMO

Antigenic differences among Coxiella burnetii strains were analyzed. The monoclonal antibodies against the lipopolysaccharide outer core did not react with the strains containing a QpRS plasmid or with plasmidless strains, whereas they reacted with strains containing a QpH1 or QpDV plasmid. C. burnetii isolates could be divided into two groups immunologically.

RESUMO

Antigenic changes in Coxiella burnetii Nine Mile strain phase I during serial passages in cell culture were analyzed with three groups of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against lipopolysaccharide. The MAbs of group 1 did not react with organisms that were passaged over five times, and the MAbs of group 2 did not react with organisms that were passaged over eight times. The MAbs of group 3 reacted with organisms passaged up to 15 times but did not react with phase II cells. These results suggest that C. burnetii could be differentiated into four phase states during phase variation.
