RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of desensitizing MI Varnish (GC America) applied before or after bleaching on the mineral component of enamel and surface topography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The coronal portions of 10 freshly extracted bovine teeth were segmented for a total of 40 specimens. Enamel specimens obtained from each tooth were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10): Group A = no bleaching; Group B = bleaching with 40% hydrogen peroxide (HP); Group C = MI Varnish applied before bleaching; and Group D = MI Varnish applied after bleaching. The calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels of the specimens in each group were determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Morphologic changes were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests were used for statistical analyses (α = .05). RESULTS: The mean Ca content of Group B was significantly lower than those of Groups A, C, and D (P < .05). The mean Ca content of Group C was significantly lower than that of Group A (P < .05). There was no significant difference in Ca content between the other groups (P > .05). The mean P content of Group A was significantly higher than those of Groups B to D (P < .05). There was no significant difference in P content between Groups B to D (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Application of MI Varnish before or after in-office bleaching was effective in reducing mineral loss. However, applying MI Varnish after bleaching was more effective.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the microhardness, surface roughness, and field emission scanning electron microscopes (FE-SEM) images of three different single-shade composites (Essentia Universal, Omnichroma, and Vittra APS Unique) in food simulation liquids such as ethanol, citric acid, and distilled water. Materials and Methods: Three single-shade universal composites were selected for this study. For each composite resin group, 92 samples (5-mm diameter and 2-mm depth) were prepared in plexiglass molds (N = 276). Then, samples were separated into four groups randomly consisting of 23 samples each (10 for hardness, 10 for roughness, and 3 for FE-SEM analysis). Three groups were immersed in food-simulating liquids (FSL)-citric acid (0.02N), distilled water, and 75% ethanol stored in a glass at 37°C for the next 7 days to simulate a wet oral environment. Control samples were stored in an opaque-light-proof box at room temperature. After the conditioning period, roughness and microhardness were measured, and FE-SEM analysis was performed. For statistical analysis, the two-way analysis of variance and Tukey honestly significant difference tests were used to evaluate roughness and microhardness (P < 0.05). Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the composites in terms of roughness and hardness averages (P = 0.001; P < 0.05). Omnichroma showed the most surface changes in ethanol storage, whereas Vittra Unique showed the most surface changes in citric acid storage such as Essentia. Conclusion: FSL that mimic various oral environments affect single-shade universal resin composite restorations.

This study evaluated the effect of different surface-treatment protocols on the repair bond strength of a bulk-fill resin composite. One-hundred and forty specimens (Filtek Bulk-fill) were created (5 mm diameter, 4 mm depth) and allocated to one of 14 groups according to surface treatment (no treatment, tribochemical silica coating, sandblasting with aluminum oxide), adhesive application (no adhesive, total-etch, self-etch), and type of repair resin (bulk-fill, universal resin) (n = 10 per group). Twenty specimens were selected for measuring the cohesive strengths of non-aged resin composites and used as reference. Other specimens were thermocycled. Shear bond-strength testing was performed. Data were analyzed using linear regression of bond strength as a function of the surface treatment, type of adhesive and whether or not adhesive was applied, and type of repair resin. The failure modes were analyzed using logistic regression of failure mode (cohesive failure vs. other types, or adhesive failure vs. other types) on the type of surface treatment, adhesive application, and repair resin used. Surface treatment, regardless of whether this was tribochemical silica coating (mean difference = 5.44 MPa; 95% CI = 4.77-6.11) or sandblasting with aluminum oxide (mean difference = 4.22 MPa; 95% CI = 3.55-4.88), resulted in higher shear bond strength than no treatment. Application of adhesive resulted in a substantial and statistically significant decrease of shear bond strength (by 8.77 MPa, for self-etch and by 7.26 MPa for total-etch) relative to no adhesive. Conversely, the type of repair resin did not influence the shear bond strength to any appreciable extent.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of three fresh detox juices, including an orange, green, and red beverage, on the color stability and surface roughness of three anterior esthetic resin-based composites (RBCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens were prepared with three different esthetic RBCs (Amaris, G-aenial Anterior, Clearfil Majesty ES-2) according to the manufacturers' instructions. Forty specimens were prepared for each RBC, and all specimens were stored in artificial saliva at 37°C for 24 hours. The initial color values and surface roughness measurements of the specimens were taken using a spectrophotometer and a profilometer. The specimens were then divided into 4 subgroups (n = 10). All specimens except the control specimens were immersed in their designated fresh detox juices (green, red, or orange) for 10 minutes twice a day. Color and surface roughness measurements were taken on day 15 and day 30, and the results were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test. The association between color change and surface roughness was evaluated by Spearman's Rank Correlation analysis. RESULTS: Color changes and surface roughness increased upon exposure to fresh detox juices for 15 and 30 days for all of the RBCs. All of the G-aenial and Amaris groups displayed color changes above the threshold of acceptability, whereas Clearfil Majesty ES-2 displayed a color change above the threshold of acceptability only after exposure to the red beverage for 30 days (ΔE > 3.7). With regard to surface roughness, Clearfil Majesty ES-2 outperformed the other RBCs (p < 0.001). According to Spearman's Rank Correlation analysis, there was no correlation between color change and surface roughness (p > 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to the fresh detox juices used in this study led to similar color changes in the RBCs used in this study.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different palatal applications on fracture strength of the fractured anterior tooth. Sixty caries-free human maxillary incisors were used. Endodontic treatments of the teeth were performed. Then, the teeth were divided randomly into five groups (n = 12). Crowns of all teeth in groups A-D were cut with diamond discs at a fixed distance of 3 mm from the incisal margin in a plane normal to the buccal surface. In all groups, coronal fragments were reattached to the remaining teeth by bonding with hybrid composite resin. After then, the teeth were restored to the following; group A, bonding and palatal laminate; group B, bonding and creation of a vertical groove; group C, bonding and creation of two slot grooves; group D, bonding only; and group E, intact tooth. It was lesser in group B than in groups C and E (p = 0.007 and p = 0.006, resp.) and lesser in group D than in groups A, C, and E (p = 0.002, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001, resp.). Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it can be concluded that methods employing palatinal laminate and small grooves are clinically feasible for the reattachment of tooth fragments to incisors.

The purpose of this study was to compare in vitro bonding effectiveness of Vertise Flow (VF), a new self-adhering flowable composite (FC), and Ultimate Flow (UF), a conventional FC, to BioAggregate (BA), and to investigate whether the use of self-etch or etch-andrinse adhesive improved the bond strength of VF to BA. Shear bond strengths of FC to BA were measured for this reason. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U-tests (p=0.05). There were significant differences of bond strengths after 24- and 72-h (p<0.05, p<0.001). After 72-h, self-adhering FC may be used successfully with BA and no other adhesive, as an alternative to the combined use of conventional FC and self-etch adhesives. The use of etch-and-rinse adhesives with self-adhering FC may improve adhesion to BA.
