RESUMO

Background: We describe a dataset of sea turtle sightings around the coast of Taiwan and its islands (Hoh and Fong 2022). This data collection was initiated by TurtleSpot Taiwan, a citizen-science project that collects sea turtle sighting data. This dataset includes 3,515 sighting data dated from March 2010, except most of the data (n = 3,128; 89%) were collected between June 2017 to December 2021. Sightings were reported by citizen scientists to the Facebook Group of TurtleSpot Taiwan by providing occurrence information. We also requested photos and videos for species identification and to record any physical abnormality of the turtle, if observable. In addition to recording data often associated with an occurrence, TurtleSpot aims to identify each sea turtle up to the individual level using the Photo Identification (Photo ID) method. Hence, if photos of left facial scutes were available, the sighted individual can be identified and given a unique turtle ID. In total, 762 individuals were assigned a turtle ID, comprising 723 Greens (Cheloniamydas), 38 Hawksbills (Eretmochelysimbricata) and one Olive Ridley (Lepidochelysolivacea) turtle. This dataset is now publicly opened in Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and available for download. It is hoped that the data may assist in future ecological studies and the development of conservation measures. New information: This dataset contains 3,515 occurrence records of sea turtles (Cheloniidae) and is currently the largest public dataset of sea turtle sighting records in Taiwan. Post-publication of this dataset to the GBIF platform demonstrated that the number of Green sea turtle Cheloniamydas records in Taiwan is one of the largest in the world (last accessed date: 15-10-2022). The data served as the foundation for understanding biogeography and sea turtle ecology in Taiwan's coastal waters.

RESUMO

This is the third of a three-part series reporting a national survey of general practice residency directors and their evaluation of the medical risk assessment (MRA) instruction curriculum in their programs. The purpose of Part III was to report the program directors' narrative comments in response to six essay-style questions regarding problems, suggestions, and innovations encountered in their efforts. Availability of physician faculty was the most frequently mentioned problem in providing MRA instruction for general practice residents. Defining and communicating goals and objectives were also of major concern. Proposed solutions included attempts to recruit additional physician faculty and improved supervision and management of program activities, especially off-service rotations. There was no consensus as to what future modifications the Commission on Dental Accreditation should make in its approach to teaching MRA as defined in Standard 14. The majority of responses indicated a desire to decrease total experience, especially in physical examination requirements other than head and neck.

RESUMO

This is the second part of a three-part series reporting a national survey of general practice residency directors and their evaluation of the medical risk assessment (MRA) instruction curriculum in their programs. The purpose of Part II is to evaluate the degree of success of the implementation of the ADA Commission on Accreditation's standard for MRA programs. Acceptable levels of achievement were attained in most areas of basic and intermediate-level skills. However, approximately one-third to one-half of general practice residency directors report that they are not achieving the standard for some intermediate or advanced assessment skills. When various instructor categories were compared, physicians scored significantly higher than oral and maxillofacial surgeons or other dentists in their ability to achieve acceptable outcomes in MRA instruction. The results of this survey, coupled with available literature concerning medical risk assessment instruction, support that changes in the undergraduate curriculum, a mandatory additional year of training, or modification of defined goals and outcomes should be considered.

RESUMO

Formal and structured training in medical risk assessment (MRA) has been a requirement in general practice residency (GPR) programs since their inception in 1972. Institutions offering GPR programs frequently differ in the levels and types of available resources necessary to implement this training. Program directors have expressed significant concerns that this training is difficult to provide, especially in the area of physical examination. The literature has not yet established how or if programs have organized their curricula to conform to accreditation standards in MRA established by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. The purpose of this study was to conduct a nationwide survey of all GPR programs to identify program characteristics and resources, didactic and clinical educational methods, and perceived achievement of ADA Standard Fourteen for MRA training. Recommendations for further research are also given. Results will be reported in this paper, the paper following in this issue, and an additional paper to be published in a forthcoming issue.

RESUMO

A patient with a known history of diffuse large cell histiocytic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in the neck and left parotid gland presented with acute right maxillary odontogenic pain and swelling. Following endodontic treatment of the nonvital maxillary right second molar, minor masticatory discomfort persisted in the sextant but a dental etiology could not be established. Two months after the onset of symptoms, the right maxilla expanded uncontrollably and biopsy confirmed an antral lymphoma. The patient succumbed to the lymphoma and secondary complications 2 months later.

RESUMO

Thirty-eight patients with a history of end stage renal disease (ESRD) were evaluated with panoramic and periapical radiographs for changes in lamina dura, trabecular pattern, radiographic density, and pulp chamber size, as well as the presence of radiolucent lesions not associated with the roots of teeth. Partial or complete loss of lamina dura, delicate of absent trabecular patterns, and an overall granular or chalky white appearance associated with an increase in radiographic density were the most common alterations. These tended to occur together and were most easily observed in the lower molar area superior to the mandibular canal. Radiolucent lesions not associated with the roots of teeth, expansion of alveolar ridges, and radiographic loss of the cortical borders of the maxillary sinus, nasal floor, and mandibular canal were less common but were occasionally noted. Multiple correlation coefficients between radiographic changes and selected biomedical patient data were obtained by computer analysis, and their significance discussed. The pathogenesis of end stage renal disease was also reviewed.
