RESUMO

Introduction Nightmare proneness, a trait-like disposition to experience frequent nightmares, has been strongly related to psychological distress. The aim of the present study was to examine if cardiac symptoms and hypothetically-related variables, nightmares, and perceived physical health could be used to differentiate nightmare proneness and psychological distress. Materials and Methods In the present cross-sectional study, 254 young adults completed measures of nightmare proneness, psychological distress, cardiac symptoms, nonspecific and posttraumatic nightmares, nightmare distress, health behaviors, perceptions of physical health, perceived stress, Type-D personality, sleep fragmentation, and dream recall. Results After controlling for psychological distress, nightmare proneness remained significantly correlated with nightmares, nightmare distress, cardiac symptoms, sleep fragmentation, physical health, perceived stress, and Type-D personality. After controlling for nightmare proneness, distress remained correlated with perceived stress and Type-D personality. Regression analyses indicated that after accounting for all variables, nightmare distress, physical health, and nightmare proneness predicted cardiac symptoms. Posttraumatic nightmares, sleep fragmentation, distress, perceived stress, Type-D personality, and chest pain predicted nightmare proneness. Conclusion Nightmare proneness and psychological distress can be considered separate constructs. The findings were consistent with those of previous research and supported the theoretical propositions that nightmare proneness includes hyperarousal, vulnerability to stressors, and concretization, a mental process in which vague internal states are made more concrete.

RESUMO

This study explored the relationship between magical ideation and "noctcaelador" (strong interest in, and psychological attachment to, the night sky). 210 university students completed Eckblad and Chapman's 1983 Magical Ideation Scale and Kelly's 2004 Noctcaelador Inventory. Scores on the two scales were significantly positively related and accounted for 14% of the common variance. Based on this operational definition of magical ideation, a strong interest in the night-sky might be associated with uncommon beliefs and reports of unusual perceptual experience. Researchers must clarify and define these concepts to study possible relations.

RESUMO

This study examined the test-retest reliability of the Sleep Disturbance Ascribed to Worry Scale. College students (N= 116) completed the scale twice over a 1-mo. interval. The test-retest correlation was .83, indicating satisfactory temporal stability.

RESUMO

The author administered university students (N = 222; 152 women, 70 men) the Worry Domains Questionnaire (F. Tallis, G. C. L. Davey, & A. Bond, 1994) and a newly constructed scale (the Sleep Disturbance Ascribed to Worry Scale) to measure sleep disturbance attributed to worry. To revisit previous studies (i.e., E. Hartmann, F. Baekeland, & G. R. Zwilling, 1972; S. J. H. McCann & L. L. Stewin, 1988) that suggested that sleep length was positively related to worry, the author also asked the students a question about habitual sleep length. The results indicated that worry and sleep disturbance attributed to worry were negatively related to sleep length. A regression analysis revealed that worry was significantly negatively related to habitual sleep length irrespective of sleep disturbance ascribed to worry.

RESUMO

In this study the author explored the relationship between anxiety and predicting task duration. He hypothesized that individuals scoring high on anxiety would predict that more time would be needed to complete a task. Students (N = 198; 80 men and 118 women) enrolled in psychology classes completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-State (STAI; C. C. Spielberger, 1983) and estimated the amount of time needed to complete a reading passage. A multiple regression analysis indicated that higher anxiety was associated with a prediction that more time would be needed to complete a task. Directions for future research are offered.

RESUMO

Scores on the Sleep Disturbance Ascribed to Worry Scale were correlated with total scores on the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale and subscale sleep scores. A significant negative correlation of -.22 (p < .01) was found between the disturbance scores and scores on the humor production subscale. Research is required to replicate and extend these findings.

RESUMO

To investigate the relationship between worry and sense of humor, the author administered the Worry Domains Questionnaire (WDQ; F. Tallis, M. Eysenck, & A. Matthews, 1992) and the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale (MSHS; J. A. Thorson & F. C. Powell, 1993) to 140 undergraduates. Worry was negatively related to sense of humor. Results of a stepwise regression, using the WDQ as the criterion and the MSHS factors as predictors, showed that the humor production factor of the MSHS loaded negatively on Step 1 and the coping with humor factor loaded positively on Step 2. The results are discussed in relation to W. E. Kelly and M. J. Miller's (1999) cognitive model of worry and worry as a coping strategy.
