RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the cytokine-mediated pathways of inflammation in the clinical course of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). METHODS: Cytokines IL-2, IL-6, INF-gamma were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Aspirates of subretinal fluid were obtained from 14 eyes with PVR and six with uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. Aspirates obtained via pars plana from ten cadaver vitreouses of normal eyes were used as controls. RESULTS: Subretinal fluids from eyes with PVR, uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and cadaver vitreous contained low concentrations of IL-2, with inconsequential differences between groups. IL-6 and IFN-gamma were twice as high in the subretinal fluid from eyes with rhetmatogenous retinal detachment as in cadaver vitreous. INF-gamma was elevated up to six times in eyes with PVR compared to controls. Fibronectin was found in a larger proportion of eyes with PVR than with uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and cadaver vitreous from healthy persons. CONCLUSIONS: These are only preliminary investigations and are too few for statistical analysis. The results suggest that cytokine-mediated pathways of inflammation are involved in the pathogenesis of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and in cellular interactions leading to the development of PVR.

RESUMO

It was established that the stable E. coli WF+ L-form cytoplasmic membranes (CM) increase the antibody response in rabbit during experimental hyperimmunization with cells of Streptococcus pyogenes A49 and Proteus mirabilis D52. Using the skin-induration test and the reaction for aggregation of macrophages in presence of homologous antigens it was established that CM increase the cell-mediated immunity of guinea-pigs to protein antigens of the same bacterial strains.

RESUMO

The preliminary application of the preparation Oxadiarrhot has no effect on the progress and the result of bacterial and mixed (bacterial-viral) infections. In animals treated with the preparation antigen-reactive and antibody-productive cells show insignificant decrease in number. There is no essential influence of the preparation on the mononuclear phagocytes system--the alveolar macrophages and polymorphonuclears do not change their functions.

RESUMO

The immunomodulatory activity of ginsenoside Rg1 from Panax ginseng was studied in mice using sheep red cells as the antigen. It was found that ginsenoside Rg1 at a dose of 10 mg/kg administered for three consecutive days before immunization increased the number of spleen plaque-forming cell, the titers of sera hemagglutinins as well as the number of antigen-reactive T-cells. Ginsenoside Rg1 also increased the number of T-helper cells with respect to the whole T-cell number and the splenocyte natural killer activity. Ginsenoside Rg1 induced an augmentation of the production of IL-1 by macrophages and exerted a direct mitogenic effect on microcultured thymus cells. Ginsenoside Rg1 also partly restored the impaired immune reactivity by cyclophosphamide treatment.

RESUMO

The author carried out experiments on 100 one-week old F1 hybrids (BALB-C C57-BL) and succeeded to obtain moderately manifested CvH reaction, injecting them with peritoneal macrophages from one of the parent's lines-BALB-C, immunized preliminary with lymphocytes from other parentalline. Preliminary incubation of macrophages with AMC without participation of compliment did not affect significantly the manifestations of GvH reaction, while successive incubation of macrophages with AMC and compliment inhibited completely the ability of the cells to induce GvH reaction. This effect was in correlation with the vitality of the cells.
