RESUMO

Background: Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in many residential areas. In this study, the simultaneous effects of fungi, Metarhizium anisopliae and fenitrothion-coated baits on the mortality rate of the German cockroach nymphs were investigated. Methods: To determine the lethal level of fenitrothion insecticide, a bioassay test was performed on the last instar nymphs of the German cockroach reared at insectarium conditions. Various toxic concentrations of fenitrothion (0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7%, 0.9%, 1.5%, and 2%) were used. Different concentrations of M. anisopliae (1×104, 1×105, 1×106, 1×107, 1×108 Conidia/ml) were also applied to nymphs. Eventually, we combined the effective dose of fenitrothion (0.93%) with the effective concentration of M. anisopliae (6.6 ×106 Conidia/ml) to provide the fungus-coated bait to attract insects. Mortality was recorded 24-96 hours after exposure to the toxic bait. The resulting data were subjected to Probit analysis. Results: The results of applying M. anisopliae spores with fenitrothion composition showed that the mortality rate of German cockroach nymphs was significant. Therefore, the optimal dose of fenitrothion used in combination with M. anisopliae seems essential to reduce the German cockroach nymphs. Conclusion: The results of this study can be considered a suitable method as a mixture with low cost and minimal damage to the environment and other organisms.

RESUMO

In this study, we investigated the potential of thymol and its mode of action to protect against the titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticle-induced testicular damage. Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into four groups: control group, TiO2 (100 mg/kg BW/day) group, TiO2 + thymol (10 mg/kg BW/day) group, and TiO2 + thymol (30 mg/kg BW/day) group. With the exception of the control group, all animals received orally TiO2 nanoparticles for 60 days. In treatment groups, animals were given orally thymol 1 h before TiO2 nanoparticles. Epididymal sperm parameters, testicular histopathology, and spermatogenesis assessments were performed for evaluation of the TiO2 and thymol effects on the testis. Furthermore, antioxidative enzyme activities such as catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) levels and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) value were measured. Intragastric administration of TiO2 for 60 consecutive days caused a significant decrease in sperm quality, widespread histopathological alteration, and significantly induced oxidative stress as manifested by elevated MDA levels and a remarkable decline in antioxidant enzyme activities such as CAT, SOD, and GPx, and also FRAP and GSH levels in testis tissue. Nearly all of these alterations were significantly ameliorated in the groups that orally received thymol before TiO2 nanoparticles administration. The results of this study demonstrated that thymol improved the spermatogenesis defects induced by TiO2 nanoparticles in rats in a dose-dependent manner by protecting the testes against the testicular toxicity. Reduction in TiO2 nanoparticle-induced oxidative stress may have a major role in this protective effect.

RESUMO

Diazinon is a kind of organophosphorus (OP) compound that is broadly used against different species of insects and pests. Oxidative stress can occur at very early stages of diazinon exposure and the pancreas is one of the main target organs for toxicity by diazinon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) and yttrium oxide nanoparticles (Y2O3 NPs) against the pancreatic damage from sub-acute exposure of diazinon. Diazinon at a dose of 70mg/kg/day was given through gavage to rats once a day. Along with diazinon, trace amounts of CeO2 NPs and Y2O3 NPs (35mg/kg and 45mg/kg per day, respectively) were administered by intraperitoneal injection once a day for 2 weeks. Animals weight and blood glucose were measured during the treatment, and oxidative stress biomarkers, diabetes physiology, function and viability of cells were investigated at the end of the treatment in serum and pancreas tissues. Apoptosis of islets was examined by the flow cytometry. The high blood glucose level and significant weight loss resulting from diazinon were modified as a result of the application of the NPs. A significant recovery in oxidative stress markers, pro-insulin, insulin, C-peptide, adenosine diphosphate/adenosine triphosphate (ATP/ADP) ratio, caspase-3 and -9 activities and apoptosis-necrosis in the islets was observed. In conclusion, administration of CeO2 NPs or Y2O3 NPs only or their combination with suitable and defined dose will help to overcome the consequences from oxidant agents.

RESUMO

In this study, 162 samples were analysed for monomer styrene content with using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method in hot tea, milk, cocoa milk. The monomer styrene content, expressed in microg/l of drink and the level of migration of styrene monomer were varied from 0.61 to 8.15 for hot tea, from 0.65 to 8.30 for hot milk, from 0.71 to 8.65 for hot cocoa milk in GPPS (general purpose polystyrene), from 0.48 to 6.85 for hot tea, from 0.61 to 7.65 for hot milk, from 0.72 to 7.78 for hot cocoa milk in HIPS (high performance polystyrene) cups in different temperatures and times. The estimated limit of detection of (HPLC) method for all samples was 0.001 mg/kg. There is linear regression for styrene monomer from 1 to 10 ng/ml. Several samples spiked with a known amount of styrene monomer. The results of the recovery in study for styrene monomer were determinate to be mean, 96.1 +/- 1.92 to 99.7 +/- 1.15%. The results of this study indicate that styrene monomer from polystyrene disposable into hot and fat drinks was migrated and this migration was highly dependent on fat content and temperature of drinks. The derived concentration of styrene monomer in this study was above the EPA (Environmental protection agency) recommended level, especially in MCLG (Maximum contaminant level goal) standard. More study is needed to further elucidate this finding.
