Nanoparticles have demonstrated noteworthy advancements in the management of various complex medical conditions, particularly cancer. In any case, these particles still harbor the potential to improve medicate conveyance to challenging, hard-to-reach loci. The interactions that occur between nanoparticles and red blood cells during their journey throughout the human body, despite exposure to blood, are still not fully understood. Assessment of the ability of nanoparticles to integrate with blood, characterized as nanoparticle compatibility, has been consistently overlooked and undervalued in its import. This review article investigates the effect of nanoparticles on red blood cells, while examining the compatibility of nanoparticles through the angle of hemolysis. This article discusses the main roles of erythrocytes and also provides an informed interpretation of several mechanisms involved in the interaction of nanoparticles and erythrocytes. Throughout the review, significant emphasis is attributed to the investigation of hemocompatibility studies concerning newly designed nanoparticles to promote their successful translation into clinical application. This review article examines the compatibility of magnetic nanoparticles in various fields, including regenerative medicine, cancer therapy, bioimaging, and drug delivery. Our results show that the chemical composition of the nanoparticle surface is a determining factor in hemocompatibility performance and interaction with blood cells. The surface properties of nanoparticles, namely surface charge, geometry, porosity, and surface functionalities of polymers or specific functional groups, represent key determinants of hemocompatibility.

Total and regional allometric growth rates and termination sites of the spinal cord related to the respective vertebra were studied in 36 goat fetuses, from the Ahvaz slaughterhouse. These specimens were assigned to 3 groups, group 1 (CRL 10-20 cm), group 2 (CRL 21-30 cm), and group 3 (CRL 31-40 cm), each consisting of 6 male and 6 female fetuses. Observations in all 3 groups revealed that although the growth of the vertebral column was greater than that of the spinal cord, the difference in growth was not constant throughout the spine. While in cervical and thoracic regions the growth rate of the spinal cord in relation to the vertebral column was almost isometric, in the caudal part of the spine there was marked decline in growth of the spinal cord compared to the respective regions of the vertebral column. Craniocaudally, the allometric growth rate became drastically negative. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between males and females. Except in thoracic region, all other regions showed significant differences (P<0.01) between similar regions in all 3 groups. In the lumbar region of group 2 no significant difference was found (P>0.05). As a consequence of the negative allometric growth of the spinal cord in relation to the vertebral column in the caudal part of the spine, the conus medullaris was displaced from S4-S5 in group 1 to S2 in group 3. No significant difference (P>0.05) between male and female fetuses concerning the termination of the spinal cord was found.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the testicular lesions and their effects on the epididymal sperm parameters in the Iranian river buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). Total numbers of 117 scrota from the pubertal buffalo were provided from the local slaughterhouse. The samples were evaluated for morphological parameters and any macro- or microscopic lesions. The sterile swabs from the testis parenchyma were subjected to microbiology culture. The epididymal spermatozoon was analysed for concentration, progressive motility and abnormalities. The results showed 34.2% fibrotic adhesions between parietal and visceral layers of tunica vaginalis that was significantly different among seasons (P < 0.05). The cases of unilateral cryptorchidism and bilateral Sertoli cell tumour were detected, with no spermatozoa in the respected epididymides. Microscopic examination showed 13.25% (31/234) lesions including general (51.61%; 16/31) and multifocal (29.03%; 9/31) degenerations as well as interstitial orchitis (9.68%; 3/31) and the Sertoli cell tumour (6.45%; 2/31). No relationship between the lesions and the bacterial isolation (n = 6) was detected. The sperm parameters and morphological parameters of the testis were under influence of microscopic lesions (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the testicular macro- and microscopic lesions may have a noticeable contribution in the Iranian buffalo fertility.

Cyclophosphamide (CP) as an alkylating agent is used for treatment of cancer and to prevent rejection of tissue transplantation. There are many reports that the teratogenic effects of cyclophosphamide can be prevented by application of antioxidant drugs and stimulation of the maternal immune system. Also, there is some evidence that melatonin and carvedilol are antioxidant.Therefore, in this study, the prophylactic effects of melatonin and carvedilol on teratogenic effects of CP was compared. This study was performed on 31 pregnant mice that were divided into six groups. The control group received normal saline and test groups received CP (20mg/kg), carvedilol (5mg/kg), melatonin (10mg/kg), CP (20mg/kg) pluscarvedilol (5mg/kg) and CP (20mg/kg) plus melatonin (10mg/kg) intraperitoneally on the 10th day of gestation, respectively. Fetuses were collected on the 19th day of gestation and after determination of weight and length; they were stained by Alizarin red-Alcian blue method. Cleft palate, spina bifida and exencephalyincidence were 62.79%, 62.79% and 30.23% in fetuses of mice that received only CP. Cleft palate,spina bifida, exencephaly, and incidence were 45.45%, 9.09% and 0% in group which received CP plus carvedilol (5mg/kg), respectively.However, cleft palate, spina bifida and exencephalyincidence were 62.5%, 45.83% and 4.16% range in the group which received CP plus melatonin (10mg/kg), respectively. In addition, theincidence of skeletal anomalies including limb, vertebral, and sternaldefects were decreased by melatonin and carvedilol. The mean weight and length of animal fetuses that had received melatonin and carvedilol were significantly greater than those receiving only CP. It is concluded; carvedilol has a significant effect in preventing CP-induced malformations and in cases like CP-induced exencephaly, cleft palate and spina bifidahas better prophylactic effect than melatonin, but this improvement is not significant.

There are many reports that the teratogenic effects of phenytoin, especially cleft palate can be decreased by stimulation of maternal immune system. Also, there is some evidence that Echinacea extract and levamisole are immunomodulator drugs. So, in this study, we compared the prophylactic effects of levamisole and Echinacea extract on teratogenic effects of phenytoin. This study was performed on 32 pregnant mice that were divided into four groups. The first group (control group) received normal saline intraperitoneally and the other groups (test groups) received phenytoin (65 mg/kg intraperitoneally) at 10th day of gestation. Levamisole and extract of Echinacea purpurea were administrated at dose of 10 and 360 mg/kg intraperitoneally, respectively, in along with and 12h later after phenytoin injection, in two groups. Fetuses were carried out in 19th day of gestation and after determination of weight and length; they were stained by Alizarin red-Alcian blue method. Cleft palate incidence was 16, 5.3, and 3.2% in fetuses of mice that received only phenytoin, phenytoin with levamisole, and phenytoin with Echinacea extract, respectively. Mean weight and length of fetuses of animals that received levamisole and Echinacea extract were significantly greater than those received only phenytoin. It is concluded that Echinacea can stimulate immune system more than levamisole and has better prophylactic effect on incidence of phenytoin-induced cleft palate, but it is not significant.
