RESUMO

A highly sensitive low-cost strain sensor was fabricated in this research study based on microdispensing direct write (MDDW) technique. MDDW is an additive manufacturing approach that involves direct deposition of functional material to the substrate. The devices were printed directly onto a polymeric substrate by optimizing the fabrication parameters. A composite of silver and carbon was used as active sensor material where both materials in the composite have opposite resistance temperature coefficients. The ratio of materials in the composite was selected so that the effect of temperature on the resistance of overall composite was canceled out. This resulted in achieving temperature compensation or inherent independence of the strain sensor resistance on temperature without requiring any additional sensors and components. The sensor was further encapsulated by electrospray deposition, which is also an additive manufacturing approach, to eliminate the effect of humidity as well. Electrical and morphological characterizations were performed to investigate the output response of the sensors and their physical and structural properties. An analog signal conditioning circuit was developed for seamless interfacing of the sensor with any electronic system. The sensor had an excellent gauge factor of 45 and a strain sensitivity of 45 Ω/µÉ› that is higher than most of the conventional strain sensors. The sensor's response showed excellent temperature and humidity compensation reducing the relative effect of temperature on the resistance by ∼99.5% and humidity by ∼99.8%.

RESUMO

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder without effective therapy and can affect a person's life. The mechanism of the disease is not completely understood. Hence, there is a need to understand the targets related to insomnia, in order to develop innovative therapies and new compounds. Recently, increasing interest has been focused on complementary and alternative medicines for treating or preventing insomnia. Research into their molecular components has revealed that their sedative and sleep-promoting properties rely on the interactions with various neurotransmitter systems in the brain. In this review, the role of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in insomnia development is summarized, while a systematic analysis of studies is conducted to assess the mechanisms of herbal medicines on different 5-HT receptors subtypes, in order to provide reference for subsequent research.

RESUMO

Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (SM) is a very popular medicinal plant that has been extensively applied for many years to treat various diseases, especially coronary heart diseases and cerebrovascular diseases, either alone or in combination with other Chinese plant-based medicines. Although a large number of studies on SM have been performed, they are scattered across a variety of publications. The present review is an up-to-date summary of the published scientific information about the traditional uses, chemical constituents, pharmacological effects, side effects, and drug interactions with SM, in order to lay the foundation for further investigations and better utilization of SM. SM contains diverse chemical components including diterpenoid quinones, hydrophilic phenolic acids, and essential oils. Many pharmacological studies have been done on SM during the last 30 years, focusing on the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular effects, and the antioxidative, neuroprotective, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic activities. The research results strongly support the notion that SM has beneficial therapeutic properties and has a potential of being an effective adaptogenic remedy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the synergistic hepatoprotective effect of lignans from Fructus Schisandrae chinensis (LFS) with Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) on chronic liver injury in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Subcutaneous injection of 10% CCl(4) twice a week for 3 months resulted in significantly (p<0.001) elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), asparate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities compared to controls. In the liver, significantly elevated levels (p<0.001) of malondialdehyde (MDA), lowered levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) (p<0.05) and catalase (CAT) (p<0.001), superoxide dismutase (SOD) (p<0.01)were observed following CCl(4) administration. 'LFS+ASP' treatment of rats at doses of 'LFS (45mg/kg)+APS (150mg/kg)' and 'LFS (135mg/kg)+APS (450mg/kg)' displayed hepatoprotective and antioxidative effects than the administration of either LFS or APS, as evident by lower (p<0.005 or 0.001) levels of serum ALT, AST, ALP and hepatic MDA (p<0.001) concentration, as well as higher SOD (p<0.05 or 0.005), CAT activities(p<0.01 or 0.005), GSH concentration (p<0.05 or 0.005) compared to the toxin treated group. Histopathological examinations revealed severe fatty degeneration in the toxin group, and mild damage in groups treated with 'LFS+APS' were observed. The coefficients drug interaction (CDI) between each individual drug and their combination (at the same dose of their single treatment) of these foregoing parameters were all less than 1, indicating that LFS and APS display hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties and act in a synergistic manner in CCl(4) induced liver injury in rats.
