RESUMO

Adverse environmental constraints such as drought, heat, cold, salinity, and heavy metal toxicity are the primary concerns of the agricultural industry across the globe, as these stresses negatively affect yield and quality of crop production and therefore can be a major threat to world food security. Recently, it has been demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is well-known as a gasotransmitter in animals, also plays a potent role in various growth and developmental processes in plants. H2S, as a potent signaling molecule, is involved in several plant processes such as in the regulation of stomatal pore movements, seed germination, photosynthesis and plant adaptation to environmental stress through gene regulation, post-translation modification of proteins and redox homeostasis. Moreover, a number of experimental studies have revealed that H2S could improve the adaptation capabilities of plants against diverse environmental constraints by mitigating the toxic and damaging effects triggered by stressful environments. An attempt has been made to uncover recent development in the biosynthetic and metabolic pathways of H2S and various physiological functions modulated in plants, H2S donors, their functional mechanism, and application in plants. Specifically, our focus has been on how H2S is involved in combating the destructive effects of abiotic stresses and its role in persulfidation. Furthermore, we have comprehensively elucidated the crosstalk of H2S with plant growth regulators.

This study examined the changing character of the last honours of those who died of COVID-19 in Kashmir and the life experiences of the families of the deceased. A semi-structured interview schedule was used to collect information from 21 participants. Using qualitative data analysis approaches, five key themes were identified vis-à-vis the impact of COVID-19 on burial rituals and customs; effects on bereaved families, shades of grief, bereavement care, community response, and coping with loss. Based on examining the pandemic-induced changes related to customs and rituals around death, the study found that the bereaved family members were in danger of marginalization, economic burdens, psychological traumas, and overall reduced quality of life. This study would be a credible addition to the existing literature on death practices as there is a shortage of research on funeral rituals during the post-pandemic period in Kashmir.

Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic constraints that limit plant growth and yield, which thereby is a serious concern to world food security. It adversely affects crop production by inducing hyperosmotic stress and ionic toxicity as well as secondary stresses such as oxidative stress, all of which disturb optimum physiology and metabolism. Nonetheless, various strategies have been employed to improve salt tolerance in crop plants, among which the application of Melatonin (Mel) could also be used as it has demonstrated promising results. The ongoing experimental evidence revealed that Mel is a pleiotropic signaling molecule, which besides being involved in various growth and developmental processes also mediates environmental stress responses. The current review systematically discusses and summarizes how Mel mediates the response of plants under salt stress and could optimize the balance between plant growth performances and stress responses. Specifically, it covers the latest advances of Mel in fine-tuning the signaling in plants. Furthermore, it highlights plant-built tolerance of salt stress by manifesting the biosynthesis of Mel, its cross talks with nitric oxide (NO), and Mel as a multifaceted antioxidant molecule.

RESUMO

Using a grounded theory approach, this qualitative study aimed to highlight the evolving technological dimensions of death and mourning practices and its transfer from a set physical setting to virtual and open space. The study was carried on 30 participants from Kashmir. Data was collected using in-depth face-to-face interviews and field notes were also used to capture non-verbal communication. The results of the study revealed that a considerable shift is being witnessed so far as death and mourning practices in Kashmir are concerned. The physical space is shrinking and giving way for virtual spaces to play their role in practices related to death and mourning.

We conducted this study to examine the nature of treatment-seeking behavior among carpet weavers in Kashmir. We used a grounded theory approach to gain an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with 35 research participants recruited through purposive and theoretical sampling techniques. Based on the primary data, our study reveals that carpet weavers approached different agencies and used multiple methods for seeking treatment for their illness(es). The majority of the participants relied on spiritual healers, followed by traditional methods, Unani treatment, compounders and self-medication, while modern medicine was the last option for seeking treatment. We also found that participants base their choices about when and where to seek treatment on multiple socio-economic and cultural factors like financial constraints, perception towards illness, no provision for leave, costly and lengthy medical treatment, side effects of modern medicine, the nature of the disease, lack of infrastructure and insecurity due to conflict. These findings are relevant to employers and various government as well as non-government organizations. Additional implications of these findings for carpet weavers, public health, for practice and research are also discussed.

Using a phenomenological approach, this study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of Kashmiri women suffering from breast cancer within the context of their day-to-day lives. Snowball sampling and theoretical sampling techniques were employed for recruiting participants. Data collection was primarily based on the principles of data saturation. Data saturation occurred after 12 women with breast cancer were interviewed. Data was collected using face-to-face in-depth individual interviews. The interview guide consisted of open-ended questions. To attain the utmost variation, sumptuousness and profundity of responses, interviewer asked probing, specific, and interpreting questions during interviews. Data analysis of the transcripts was based on Graneheim and Lundman's (Qualitative content analysis in nursing research: concepts, procedures and measures to achieve trustworthiness. Nurse Education Today 2004;24:105-12) procedures for taking out themes in qualitative data. Two main themes emerged that explained the lived experiences of women with breast cancer: (i) challenges encountered (altered body image, embarrassment, perceived worries, financial constraints, dealing with negative attitudes and stigma) and (ii) coping strategies (reliance on religion and spirituality, social support, living as usual, optimistic attitude and will to recover, and venting out). The findings revealed that breast cancer diagnosis influences women significantly as they acknowledged that it wasthe most traumatic experience of their life; however, with time, they started to accept the reality and made use of various methods to cope with their illness.

RESUMO

Melatonin (MEL) is the potential biostimulator molecule, governing multiple range of growth and developmental processes in plants, particularly under different environmental constrains. Mainly, its role is considered as an antioxidant molecule that copes with oxidative stress through scavenging of reactive oxygen species and modulation of stress related genes. It also enhances the antioxidant enzyme activities and thus helps in regulating the redox hemostasis in plants. Apart from its broad range of antioxidant functions, it is involved in the regulation of various physiological processes such as germination, lateral root growth and senescence in plants. Moreover this multifunctional molecule takes much interest due to its recent identification and characterization of receptorCandidate G-protein-Coupled Receptor 2/Phytomelatonin receptor(CAND2/PMTR1) in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this compiled work, different aspects of melatonin in plants such as melatonin biosynthesis and detection in plants, signaling pathway, modulation of stress related genes and physiological role of melatonin under different environmental stresses have been dissected in detail.

PURPOSE: To investigate the wound healing efficacy of two chitosan films, Chit-AA and Chit-LA, in comparison with a commercial preparation, Omiderm, using punch biopsy wounds in rats. METHODS: The punch biopsy wounds were created in the abdominal region of male Wistar rats. The films were evaluated in terms of transparency, flexibility, adherence property, ease of removal from wounds without damaging underlying tissues and fluid accumulation. In addition, the wounds were examined for dryness, exudation, contraction, period of epithelialization and scar formation. RESULTS: Chit-AA, Chit-LA and Omiderm films were comparable in terms of transparency, flexibility, adherence property, ease of film removal from wounds without damaging underlying tissues and fluid accumulation. Although there was no statistically significant difference in wound dryness and exudation between the film treated wounds and untreated wounds (Control), a significant difference was obtained in complete wound closure (t(100%)), period of epithelialization and scar formation. CONCLUSIONS: Both Chit-LA and Chit-AA were able to promote wound healing with minimal scar formation.

PURPOSE: To investigate and compare the effect of three analytical methods, hydrogen bromide titrimetry (HBr titrimetry), infrared spectroscopy (IR spectroscopy), and first derivative UV-spectrophotometry (FDUV-spectrophotometry) in the determination of degree of deacetylation (DD) of chitosan. METHODS: Three different chitosan samples were selected for the DD quantification employing HBR titrimetry, IR spectroscopy with samples in the forms of KBr disc (at ratios of 1:2 and 1:3) and thin film (concentrations of 0.5 percent and 1 percent), and FDUV- spectrophotometry. RESULTS: The mean DD values of chitosan samples obtained by HBr titrimetry was significantly lower (p < 0.05) compared to IR spectroscopy using film (concentrations of 0.5 and 1 percent) as well as FDUV-spectrophotometry (purified and unpurified samples), but were significantly higher (p< 0.005) than those obtained using IR spectroscopy using KBr disk except for Chit-S2 computed using baseline (a), which were closely comparable (p > 0.05). In the IR spectroscopic method, the DD values differed when computed using different baseline. It can be observed that the values calculated using baseline (b) was generally higher than those calculated using baseline (a). On the other hand, chitosan samples prepared in the form of film might not be significantly affected by the different baseline as no consistent trend was observed. For FDUV-spectrophotometry, the DD values of purified Chit-S2 samples dried using oven and freeze dryer were comparable and not significantly different (p > 0.05). Similarly, no significant difference was observed for unpurified chitosan samples when dried using freeze dryer and oven (p > 0.05). Furthermore, the DD values of the purified and unpurified chitosan samples dried using freeze dryer were not significantly different except for Chit-S2. CONCLUSION: The DD values of chitosan were highly affected by the analytical methods employed. Hence, we proposed that the quantification method for DD should also be stated when reporting the DD value of chitosan sample.
