RESUMO

Endodontic-periodontal lesions have always been a challenge for treatment due to the reduced success rate in comparison to endodontic or periodontal lesions alone. This case report describes surgical/endodontic management of supra-erupted non-vital maxillary incisor with primary periodontal and secondary endodontic lesions with mobility grade III and severe horizontal and vertical loss of attachment apparatus in a 55 years old woman with aggressive periodontitis. The successful results at one-year follow-up revealed that with an appropriate case selection strategy, proper regeneration method and soft tissue enhancement, severe combined endo-perio lesions may treat.

RESUMO

Periodontitis and tooth decay are common dental diseases. There are some bacterial risk factors such as Streptococcus mutans, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Candida albicans complications, tubers of Cyperus rotundus was used to determine the antimicrobial effect of fungi. Considering the increasing resistance of bacteria and fungi to antibiotics and their alcoholic and aqueous extracts and essential oil on Streptococcus mutans, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Candida albicans, as well as an examination cytotoxicity on gingival fibroblast cells. Alcoholic and aqueous extracts and essential oil prepared from tubers of Cyperus rotundus. After bacterial and fungal cultures, the inhibition zone, Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC), and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), were studied. Cytotoxicity was also evaluated using the Methyl tetrazolium test (MTT).The results showed that Cyperus rotundus alcoholic extract had the greatest effect on inhibition of growth and death of Streptococcus mutans, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. According to the present study, Cyperus rotundus extract can be considered as a suitable candidate for the treatment and prevention of periodontitis and tooth decay.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to review and compare survival/success rate of dental implants inserted in autogenous and allogenic bone blocks (ALBs). A PubMed search was performed from January 1990 to June 2014 limited to English language and human studies. Studies that reported treatment outcome of implants inserted in augmented alveolar ridges with autogenous or ALBs were included. Primary search identified 470 studies. For autogenous bone block (ABB) 36 articles and for ALB 23 articles met the inclusion criteria. Evidence on implant survival/success rate of both techniques was limited to observational studies with relatively small sample sizes. Study design, treatment methods, follow-ups, defect location, and morphology varied among studies. The range of implant survival and success rates in ABB was from 73.8% to 100% and 72.8% to 100%, respectively. The corresponding numbers for ALB were 95.3-100% and 93.7-100%, respectively. A definite conclusion could not be reached. Future studies with long-term follow-ups are required to further elucidate this issue.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Growth factors play a significant role in cell proliferation and differentiation during different stages of the bone repair. However, several limitations have been brought researchers attention to an osteoinductive small molecule including Purmorphamine. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of Purmorphamine on adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) seaded on beta-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) granules. METHODS: hDPSCs were established from extracted wisdom teeth of healthy volenteers. Cells at passage 3 were seeded on ß-TCP in the presence or absence of Purmorphamine. Cell adhesion and proliferation were assessed using scanning electeron microscopy (SEM) and DNA counting assay, respectively, after 1, 3 and 5days. Then, hDPSCs seeded on ß-TCP were subjected to osteogenic medium with or without Purmorphamine. After 7 and 14days osteogenic diffrentiation capability of hDPSCs were determined using real-time RT-PCR and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay. RESULTS: The significant increase in amount of DNA was observed at day 3 and 5 in the presence of Purmorphamine. SEM imaging also was confirmed the DNA counting assay; in all given time points, hDPSC attachment and growth was significantly higher in the presence of Purmorphamine. ALP activity was increased by Purmorphamine at both 7 and 14days of induction. Purmorphamine showed to effect on osteopontin expression at earlier stage of osteogenic differentiation, whereas for osteocalcin expression, this effect was more evident at later stage of differentiation. CONCLUSION: Purmorphamine had a promotive effect on adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of hDPSCs cultured on ß-TCP. The outcome of the current study would help in development of in vitro culture conditions for better osteogenic differentiation of hDPSCs prior to transplantation.
