A procedure has been developed for simultaneous determination of the activities of alpha-D- and beta-D-mannosidase in the biological fluids from the quantity of free 4-nitrophenol. The latter is released via enzymatic degradation of substrates of 4-nitrophenyl-alpha-D-mannose and 4-nitrophenyl-beta-D-mannose in individual incubation tests.

Correlation analysis conducted in 106 children with chronic gastroduodenitis enabled us to distinguish leading factors in the onset of this disease, to estimate the strength of connection between clinicoanamnestic and laboratory-instrumental methods of investigation. A strong correlation was found in children with gastroduodenitis between changes of sialo-containing compounds, secretory IgA in the saliva and inflammation severity.

A method for measuring fucose not bound to proteins in the serum is developed. The level of this enzyme is shown to increase with age. It is increased in adult patients with myeloma, liver cirrhosis, and rheumatic fever and in children with exacerbations of chronic osteomyelitis and gastroduodenitis.

In exacerbation of chronic gastroduodenitis in children an increase in the content of decay products of glycoprotein components and a decrease of protein-bound fucosa were recorded in the basal and stimulated portions of gastric juice. The change of mucous glycoprotein properties and, therefore, mucous protective barrier of the stomach are important factors in pathogenesis of chronic gastroduodenitis exacerbation in children.

The rate of perinatal encephalopathy and the nature of its outcomes in relation to the syndrome of the acute period of the disease were studied in 102 children. Also examined were the cytochemical parameters of blood leukocytes, alkaline phosphatase of neutrophils, acid phosphatase of lymphocytes, succinate and alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase of lymphocytes in prematurely born infants on the 8th-15th and the 30th-45th days of life. It has been ascertained that in addition to the comatose and convulsive syndromes the prognosis of the disease is the least favourable in the syndrome of total inhibition of the CNS in the acute period. Furthermore, the findings of the conducted study open the possibility of preliminary individual prognosis of the disease on the basis of the cytochemical picture at the end of the acute period.
