Background: It has been known that there is a significant correlation between depression and cardiovascular diseases. However, the reasons behind this correlation that could affect mortality and morbidity were not fully identified. The present study aimed to analyze arterial stiffness diagnosed with ultrasonography, which could be associated with cardiovascular disease risks in depression patients, and to compare the findings with those of healthy controls. Methods: The study was conducted with 35 depression patients and 35 healthy individuals. Routine complete blood and biochemistry tests were requested for all patients, and their weight and height, waist circumference, and diastolic and systolic arterial blood pressure were measured. Femoral and carotid artery intima-media thickness and other arterial stiffness parameters were determined with Doppler ultrasonography. Results: It was determined that the systolic pressure (P = .028) was higher in the patient group (P = .028). Also, the carotid elastic modulus (P = .048) was significantly higher in the patient group. A negative and significant correlation was determined between femoral compliance and chlorpromazine equivalent dose (P = .021, r = -0.389). Conclusion: It was determined that the systolic blood pressure and carotid elastic modulus arterial stiffness parameters were significantly higher in depression patients. Measurable arterial stiffness parameters should be investigated in depression patients as cardiovascular risk markers. Furthermore, the determination of the effects of psychotropic drugs employed in arterial stiffness treatment could play an important role in the determination of cardiovascular disease risk in these patients.

OBJECTIVE: Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is a common disorder in the sacrococcygeal region and has a lower incidence in female as compared with male patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical, hematological, biochemical, and hormonal parameters in women with PSD, and to determine whether the disease plays a major role in abnormalities of clinical and laboratory findings. This study also brings to the forefront the issue of the association between PSD and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: The prospective single-center study included women with PSD, and an equal number of healthy women enrolled in the control group (50 women in each arm of the study). Medical history was taken from every patient, and blood tests were performed on all participants. Ultrasound imaging was performed to evaluate the ovaries. RESULTS: Both groups were matched for age (p=0.124). The prevalence of obesity and dyslipidemia was significantly higher in women with PSD compared to controls (p=0.046, p=0.008, respectively). The right ovary volume was significantly higher in the study group than the control group (p=0.028). The study group had also significantly higher mean levels of neutrophil, C-peptide, and thyroid stimulating hormone (p=0.047, p=0.031, and p=0.048, respectively). The prevalence of PCOS was higher in patients with PSD, but the difference failed to reach statistical significance (32 vs. 22%, p=0.26). CONCLUSION: Based on the findings of our study, some clinical and blood parameters differed significantly between women with and without PSD. Although the present study revealed that the prevalence of PCOS was not significantly different in women with or without PSD, more comprehensive and prospective studies are required.

Objectives: Mastalgia is a medical condition that primarily affects women of all age groups. Affected individuals experience excruciating pain, tightness, or a burning sensation in the breast tissue. The aim of this study is to observe the clinicopathologic features of women with mastalgia and compare these features with asymptomatic cases. Methods: A total of 524 female patients who applied to the general surgery outpatient clinic were prospectively evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 (G1) included patients with mastalgia, while Group 2 (G2) included asymptomatic patients. The two groups were compared in terms of clinical, radiological, and pathological features. Results: This study was conducted on 524 women, among whom the prevalence of mastalgia was found to be 61.45%. There were 322 patients in G1 and 202 patients in G2. The mean age was significantly higher in G2 compared to G1 (46.33±10.33 vs. 43.58±10.33, respectively; p=0.001). Premenopausal women rates for G1 and G2 were 73.91% and 59.4%, respectively (p=0.001). The regular exercise rate in G1 was 18.01%, while it was 25.74% in G2 (p=0.034). The past history of breast cancer rate was significantly higher in G2 than in G1 (p=0.015). The consumption of analgesics was significantly lower in G2 compared to G1 (p=0.05). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were the most commonly used analgesic drug class in both groups, with significant intergroup differences (G1: 27.63%, G2: 19.8%, p=0.043). Screening mammography with or without ultrasound examination was performed significantly more often in G2 compared to G1 (66.33% vs. 55.27% and 82.17% vs. 72.98%, p=0.012 and p=0.016, respectively). No significant difference was found concerning the frequency of benign or malignant pathologies between the groups. Conclusion: Breast pain is common and should be considered physiological without other breast symptoms and after excluding non-breast causes. It is safe to provide symptom control advice and reassurance to patients who have breast pain but do not have signs or symptoms indicating a possible serious underlying condition requiring further medical intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal involvement of COVID-19 is a current issue. We aimed to evaluate hepatic and pancreatic density alterations on computed tomography (CT) and to analyze whether these alterations had a relationship with chest CT score and laboratory findings. METHODS: Patients with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction-confirmed COVID-19 from March 11, 2020, to February 6, 2021, were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into nonprogressive and progressive groups according to their chest CT scores. Liver and pancreas density, and liver-to-spleen (L/S) ratio were calculated. Laboratory findings, medication, intensive care unit stay, and survival were noted. RESULTS: There were 51 patients in the nonprogressive group and 123 patients in the progressive group. The median (minimum to maximum) L/S value of the nonprogressive group was 1 (0.28-1.53) at admission and 1.06 (0.33-1.83) at follow-up ( P < 0.001). In the progressive group, the median L/S value was 1.08 (0.35-1.51) at admission and 0.92 (0.33-1.75) at follow-up ( P < 0.001). A significant difference was found between the 2 groups at admission and follow-up ( P = 0.010 and P < 0.001, respectively). Pancreatic density measured at follow-up was significantly lower in the progressive group ( P = 0.045). In the progressive group, aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, creatinine, urea, C-reactive protein, D-dimer, and white blood cell values were higher; albumin and lymphocyte values were lower ( P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with COVID-19 with progressive CT scores may have a decrease in L/S values, and their pancreatic density is lower than nonprogressives. Aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, creatinine, urea, C-reactive protein, D-dimer, and white blood cell values tend to be higher in patients with a high chest CT score.

PURPOSE: To determine the most frequently used different apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurement methods in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and their correlation with the International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) histologic grading system. METHODS: A total of 99 patients who underwent diffusion-weighted imaging and whose pathologic diagnosis of RCC was confirmed were included in the study. As a result of a literature review, region of interest (ROI) selection and measurement methods were determined in five ways. These included a small ROI (ADC1) on the solid part of the lesion showing the most restriction; a large ROI (ADC2) on the solid part of the lesion showing restriction; ROI (ADC3) that covered the lesion in the cross-section with the largest diameter, which was obtained by placing ROIs (ADC4) covering the lesion on all sections of the lesion; three small ROIs (ADC5) on solid parts of the lesion showing the most restriction. Then, ADC measurements were made from the contralateral normal kidney parenchyma. Tumors were pathologically subdivided [71 clear cell RCCs (ccRCC), 17 chromophobe RCCs (chRCC), 11 papillary RCCs (pRCC)], and graded according to the ISUP nuclear grading system (42 high-grade, 57 low-grade). Data were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: In all measurement methods, ADC values of RCCs were statistically significantly lower than normal kidney ADC values. There were no differences between the ADC3 and ADC4 measurements of RCCs (p = 0.999). There was a statistical difference in other measurement methods (p < 0.001). There were differences between ccRCCs and pRCCs and chRCCs in all measurement methods. In all measurement methods, pRCC and chRCC ADC values ​​were lower than ccRCC ADC values. When ISUP nuclear grading and ADC values ​​were compared, there was a statistically inverse correlation between all ADC measurements. The strongest correlation was found in the ADC1 and ADC5 measurements. When the ADC values ​​of ISUP low and high-grade groups were compared, a significant difference was found in the ADC5 measurement method (p = 0.046). CONCLUSION: According to the findings of the study, ADC5 is the measurement method that shows the best correlation with the ISUP histologic grading system. Therefore, we think that ADC5 can be the primary measurement method for determining the ADC value of RCCs.
