RESUMO

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) are well known for their adhesive properties with hydrogels and living tissues. However, achieving direct contact between the silica nanoparticle surface and the adherend necessitates the removal of capping agents, which can lead to severe aggregation when exposed to wet surfaces. This aggregation is ineffective for simultaneously bridging the two adherends, resulting in a reduced adhesive strength. In this study, we designed and synthesized mesoporous silica nanochains (MSNCs) to enhance the interactions with hydrogels by promoting the formation of coarser structures with increased nanopore exposure. Chain-like one-dimensional assemblies in the MSNCs were generated by depleting the capping ligand, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, from the surface of the MSNPs. To quantify the porous areas of the MSNCs, we analyzed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images using an in-house SEM image analysis algorithm. Additionally, we conducted a comparative assessment of the adhesion energies of MSNCs and MSNPs on a poly(dimethylacrylamide) hydrogel using a universal testing machine. The MSNCs exhibited a maximum adhesion energy of 13.7 ± 0.7 J/m2 at 3 wt %, surpassing that of MSNPs (10.9 ± 0.3 J/m2) at 2 wt %. Moreover, the unique stacking structure of the MSNCs enabled them to maintain an adhesion energy of 13.4 ± 1.0 J/m2 at a high concentration of 9 wt %, whereas the adhesion energy of MSNPs decreased to 8.2 ± 0.4 J/m2. This underscores their potential as superior hydrogel adhesives in challenging wet tissue-like environments.

RESUMO

Liquid metal-elastomer composite is a promising soft conductor for skin-interfaced bioelectronics, soft robots, and others due to its large stretchability, ultrasoftness, high electrical conductivity, and mechanical-electrical decoupling. However, it often suffers from deformation-induced leakage, which can smear skin, deteriorate device performance, and cause circuit shorting. Besides, antimicrobial property is desirable in soft conductors to minimize microbial infections. Here, we report phase separation-based synthesis of porous liquid metal-elastomer composites with high leakage resistance and antimicrobial property, together with large stretchability, tissue-like compliance, high and stable electrical conductivity over deformation, high breathability, and magnetic resonance imaging compatibility. The porous structures can minimize leakage through damping effects and lower percolation thresholds to reduce liquid metal usage. In addition, epsilon polylysine is loaded into elastic matrices during phase separation to provide antimicrobial property. The enabled skin-interfaced bioelectronics can monitor cardiac electrical and mechanical activities and offer electrical stimulations in a mechanically imperceptible and electrically stable manner even during motions.

RESUMO

African swine fever (ASF) is an obligated declaration swine disease, provoking farm isolation measures and the closing of affected country boarders. ASF virus (ASFV) is currently the cause of a pandemic across China and Eurasia. By the end of 2019, ASF was detected in nine EU Member States: Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Belgium. The affected area of the EU extended progressively, moving mostly in a southwestern direction (EFSA). Inactivated and/or subunit vaccines have proven to fail since certain virus replication is needed for protection. LAVs are thus the most realistic option, which must be safe, effective and industrially scalable. We here generated a vaccine prototype from the Arm/07/CBM/c2 genotype II strain, in which we have deleted the EP402R (CD2v) and A238L genes by CRISPR/Cas9 in COS-1 cells, without detectable further genetic changes. The successful immunization of pigs has proven this vaccine to be safe and fully protective against the circulating Korean Paju genotype II strain, opening the possibility of a new vaccine on the market in the near future.

RESUMO

Synthesizing patchy particles with predictive control over patch size, shape, placement and number has been highly sought-after for nanoparticle assembly research, but is fraught with challenges. Here we show that polymers can be designed to selectively adsorb onto nanoparticle surfaces already partially coated by other chains to drive the formation of patchy nanoparticles with broken symmetry. In our model system of triangular gold nanoparticles and polystyrene-b-polyacrylic acid patch, single- and double-patch nanoparticles are produced at high yield. These asymmetric single-patch nanoparticles are shown to assemble into self-limited patch‒patch connected bowties exhibiting intriguing plasmonic properties. To unveil the mechanism of symmetry-breaking patch formation, we develop a theory that accurately predicts our experimental observations at all scales-from patch patterning on nanoparticles, to the size/shape of the patches, to the particle assemblies driven by patch‒patch interactions. Both the experimental strategy and theoretical prediction extend to nanoparticles of other shapes such as octahedra and bipyramids. Our work provides an approach to leverage polymer interactions with nanoscale curved surfaces for asymmetric grafting in nanomaterials engineering.

RESUMO

Laser-assisted fabrication of conductive materials on flexible substrates has attracted intense interests because of its simplicity, easy customization, and broad applications. However, it remains challenging to achieve laser scribing of conductive materials on tissue-like soft elastomers, which can serve as the basis to construct bioelectronics and soft actuators. Here, we report laser scribing of metallic conductive, photoactive transition metal oxide (molybdenum dioxide) on soft elastomers, coated with molybdenum chloride precursors, under ambient conditions. Laser-scribed molybdenum dioxide (LSM) exhibits high electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, chemical stability, and compatibility with magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, LSM can be made on various substrates (polyimide, glass, and hair), showing high generality. Furthermore, LSM-based Janus on-skin electronics are developed to record information from human skin, human breath, and environments. Taking advantage of its outstanding photothermal effect, LSM-based soft actuators are developed to build light-driven reconfigurable three-dimensional architectures, reshapable airflow sensors, and smart robotic worms with bioelectronic sensors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A considerable number of studies has been carried out to develop alloplastic bone graft materials such as hydroxyapatite (HAP) that mimic the hierarchical structure of natural bones with multiple levels of pores: macro-, micro-, and nanopores. Although nanopores are known to play many essential roles in natural bones, only a few studies have focused on HAPs containing them; none of those studies investigated the functions of nanopores in biological systems. METHOD: We developed a simple yet powerful method to introduce nanopores into alloplastic HAP bone graft materials in large quantities by simply pressing HAP nanoparticles and sintering them at a low temperature. RESULTS: The size of nanopores in HAP scaffolds can be controlled between 16.5 and 30.2 nm by changing the sintering temperature. When nanopores with a size of ~ 30.2 nm, similar to that of nanopores in natural bones, are introduced into HAP scaffolds, the mechanical strength and cell proliferation and differentiation rates are significantly increased. The developed HAP scaffolds containing nanopores (SNPs) are biocompatible, with negligible erythema and inflammatory reactions. In addition, they enhance the bone regeneration when are implanted into a rabbit model. Furthermore, the bone regeneration efficiency of the HAP-based SNP is better than that of a commercially available bone graft material. CONCLUSION: Nanopores of HAP scaffolds are very important for improving the bone regeneration efficiency and may be one of the key factors to consider in designing highly efficient next-generation alloplastic bone graft materials.

RESUMO

We report the inversion of the role of Au(iii) chloride, from a gold precursor to an etchant, for the synthesis of smooth and spherical AuNPs with nanoscale size tunability in a one-pot-system. Inversion of the role of Au(iii) chloride was achieved by regulating the ratio between the reducing agent and Au(iii) chloride.
