BACKGROUND: Jawoongo (JW) is a topical herbal ointment that has been used as an alternative treatment option for atopic dermatitis. Topical ointments are known to have less bioavailability because the stratum corneum allows only lipophilic and low molecular weight drugs to pass across it. This study aimed to investigate whether applying microneedle patches (MNP) increases the therapeutic effect of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)+JW for atopic dermatitis by enhancing transdermal delivery. METHODS: Atopic dermatitis was induced by DNCB in BALB/c mice. The combination treatment of JW and MNP was estimated to study the effect of MNP in improving transdermal delivery. Histological analysis, quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), and immunofluorescence were performed to verify the effect of MNP in enhancing the therapeutic effects of DNCB+JW on atopic dermatitis in mice. RESULTS: Both combination treatment and DNCB+JW treatment ameliorated histological alterations and reduced skin thickness and infiltration of CD4+ T cells in atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions in DNCB-exposed BALB/c mice. However, the improvement of histological alterations was better in the combination treatment, which was almost normal. Furthermore, the combination treatment exhibited a larger decrease in mRNA levels of IL-4, IL-6, IL-13, iNOS, and TNF-α, compared to DNCB+JW only. In addition, skin thickness and infiltration of CD4+ T cells in the sensitized skin were significantly lower using the combination treatment than using DNCB+JW only. CONCLUSION: Combination treatment with JW and MNP further decreased skin thickness and several inflammatory cytokines in atopic dermatitis like skin lesions compared to treatment using JW alone. These findings suggest that applying a dissolvable MNP after JW application could be useful for treating atopic dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: This study systematically analyzed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and vaccination details during pregnancy by using the national health insurance claims data. METHODS: Population-based retrospective cohort data of 12,399,065 women aged 15-49 years were obtained from the Korea National Health Insurance Service claims database between 2019 and 2021. Univariate analysis was performed to compare the obstetric outcomes of pregnant women (ICD-10 O00-O94) and their newborns (ICD-10 P00-P96) with and without COVID-19. Univariate analysis was also performed to compare the age and obstetric outcomes of pregnant women receiving different types of vaccines. RESULTS: The percentage of pregnant women with COVID-19 during pregnancy was 0.11%. Some obstetric outcomes of pregnant women with COVID-19, including the rates of preterm birth or cesarean delivery, were significantly better than those of pregnant women without COVID-19. The rate of miscarriage was higher in pregnant women with COVID-19 than without COVID-19. However, the outcomes of newborns of women with and without COVID-19 were not significantly different. Regarding vaccination type, obstetric outcomes of pregnant women appeared to be worse with the viral vector vaccine than with the mRNA vaccine. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically analyze COVID-19 and vaccination details during pregnancy using the national health insurance claims data in Korea. The obstetric outcomes in pregnant women with and without COVID-19 and their newborns were similar.

AIM: This study aims to develop a free, limited-edition workshop as an effective knowledge translation strategy to enhance nurse leader-perceived self-efficacy for competence using Park's Sweet Spot Theory and to evaluate its effectiveness over time. METHOD: This is a study showing the process of developing a study protocol and its details. RESULTS: A 2-day workshop was developed for innovators and early adopters among nurse leaders with a macro-level influence based on Rogers's diffusion of innovations theory, which consists of an introduction of Park's Sweet Spot Theory, hands-on experience, a summary session, and a presentation of a certificate of completion. The workshop will be held at the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing, using the "enabling blends" mode. A hybrid design of comparative effectiveness research and analysis of change will be utilized to assess nurse leader-perceived self-efficacy. CONCLUSION: This protocol is significant as the first step in providing scientific rationales on how to effectively implement new knowledge-optimal safe nurse staffing levels derived from Park's Sweet Spot Theory-into the right (safe yet efficient) nursing workforce policy-making to alleviate global nursing shortages.

Objective: This paper aims to spur thought-provoking practical debates on current nurse workforce staffing and scheduling systems in relation to a critical review of Ang and colleagues' (2018) article entitled "Nurse workforce scheduling in the emergency department: A sequential decision support system considering multiple objectives."Design: Discussion paper on a practical discourse in connection with the aforementioned published article.Discussion: Mathematical Programming (optimisation) (MP)-based nursing research has been published for nearly thirty years almost exclusively in industrial engineering or health business administration journals, demonstrating a widening gap between nursing research and practice. Nurse scientists' knowledge and skill of MP is insufficient, as are their interdisciplinary collaborations, setting back the advancement of nursing science. Above all, nurse scientists skilled in decision science are desperately needed for that analytic intellection which is rooted in the 'intrinsic nature and value of nursing care.' It is imperative that nurse scientists be well-prepared for the new age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution through both an education in MP and interdisciplinary collaboration with decision science experts in order to prevent potential stereotyped MP-based algorithm-driven destructive influences.Conclusions: The current global nursing shortage makes optimal nursing workforce staffing and scheduling more important. MP helps nurse executives and leaders to ensure the most efficient number of nurses with the most effective composition of nurse staffing at the right time for a reasonable cost. Nurse scientists urgently need to produce a new nursing knowledge base that is directly implementable in nursing practice.Impact Statement: Nurse scientists should take the leading role in producing the mathematical programming-integrated knowledge base that is directly implementable in practice.

Skin is larger than any other organ in humans. Like other organs, various bacterial, viral, and inflammatory diseases, as well as cancer, affect the skin. Skin diseases like acne, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis often reduce the quality of life seriously. Therefore, effective treatment of skin disorders is important despite them not being life-threatening. Conventional medicines for skin diseases include corticosteroids and antimicrobial drugs, which are effective in treating many inflammatory and infectious skin diseases; however, there are growing concerns about the side effects of these therapies, especially during long-term use in relapsing or intractable diseases. Hence, many researchers are trying to develop alternative treatments, especially from natural sources, to resolve these limitations. Bee venom (BV) is an attractive candidate because many experimental and clinical reports show that BV exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, anti-fibrotic, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anticancer effects. Here, we review the therapeutic applications of BV in skin diseases, including acne, alopecia, atopic dermatitis, melanoma, morphea, photoaging, psoriasis, wounds, wrinkles, and vitiligo. Moreover, we explore the therapeutic mechanisms of BV in the treatment of skin diseases and cytotoxic effects of BV on skin disease-causing pathogens, including bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Parabens have been used in multiple products including personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and foods for more than 50 years but increasing numbers of studies have raised concerns on their safety. The present study was designed to determine urinary paraben levels among pregnant women and their matching newborn infants (<48 h after delivery), and the association between paraben levels and stress markers. Pregnant women (n=46) and their matching newborn infants were recruited from four university hospitals located in Seoul, Ansan and Jeju of Korea, 2011. Parabens including methyl paraben (MP), ethyl paraben (EP), n-propyl paraben (PP), and n-butyl paraben (BP) were measured in the urine using an automatic, high throughput online SPE-LC-MS/MS method. Urinary concentrations were normalized with specific gravity (SG). Free cortisol, malondealdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were measured in the urine as stress marker. Urinary MP was detected as the highest, and BP was detected as the lowest paraben in the urine samples of both pregnant women and their infants. Significant correlations between paraben concentrations of maternal and their newborn infant's urine were observed. The levels of urinary parabens among Korean pregnant women are comparable to those reported elsewhere, except for EP which were 4-9 folds higher than pregnant women of other countries. The ratios of infant to maternal urinary paraben concentrations varied between 0.5 and 0.6 for MP and PP, but approximately 10 fold lower for EP. Urinary MP or EP levels were associated with several oxidative stress related biomarkers such as urinary 8-OHdG and MDA, even after the adjustment of relevant covariates such as maternal age, mode of delivery, pre-pregnancy BMI, gestational age and parity. This is the first study that reported the levels of major parabens in the first urine of newborn infants. Further studies are warranted to understand the implications of paraben exposure among biologically susceptible human populations.
