RESUMO

Dimethylsilanediol (DMSD) is the common degradation product of ubiquitous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) in water and soil. Given the high solubility of DMSD in water, the further degradation of DMSD in this compartment is of particular importance. While DMSD appears relatively resistant to degradation in standard hydrolysis or biodegradation studies, it may degrade by indirect photolysis in surface waters through oxidation by hydroxyl radicals. The formation of hydroxyl radicals is governed by nitrate ions or other promoters in the presence of sunlight. In this study, we investigated the impact of nitrate ions on the oxidative decomposition of DMSD in water under simulated solar light. When exposed to solar light, DMSD can degrade all the way to the natural, mineralized substances, namely carbon dioxide (in the form of carbonic acid) and silicic acid, via the intermediate methylsilanetriol (MST).

The organic carbon normalized partition coefficient, KOC, describes the equilibrium distribution of a chemical between water and organic carbon in soil or sediment. It is a key parameter in evaluating chemical persistence, mass distribution, and transport using multimedia fate and transport models. Considerable uncertainty remains about the KOC values of cyclic volatile methylsiloxane (cVMS) compounds, and in particular the dependence of KOC on temperature. In this study, we used a batch equilibrium (BE) method to measure KOC values and their temperature dependence between ∼5 and 25 °C for octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) with soil and sediments. Approximate log KOC values at 25 °C were 4.5-5.0 for D4 and 5.5-6.1 for D5 with different sorbents, and decreased by 0.3 log units or less at 4-5 °C. Enthalpies of sorption, ΔHOC, obtained for the different sorbents ranged from +7.2 to +16 kJ mol-1, with average values of +7.9 and +13 kJ mol-1 for D4 and D5, respectively. These values differ in magnitude and direction from those reported elsewhere based on KOC values determined by a novel dynamic purge-and-trap (PnT) method, but are consistent with predictions based on their solvation properties. A new fugacity-based multimedia model incorporating sorption/desorption kinetics was developed and used to predict concentrations in the phases of BE and PnT systems during desorption of cVMS under different experimental and ideal conditions. Model simulations suggested that KOC values for cVMS compounds derived from the PnT systems could be influenced by sorption disequilibrium between water and solids controlled by desorption rates from the particle phase to water, and subsequent losses due to volatilization and degradation. This has the potential to result in overestimation of KOC values when fitting the experimental data of cVMS mass remaining in a PnT system over time, which could explain the observed differences between the methods.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between adult children's migration and depression among older parents in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and explore the role of intergenerational support in contributing to their depression. METHODS: Data are from the eighth wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), pooling a study sample of 11 CEE countries, with a cross-sectional design. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and hierarchical linear regression were conducted using a study sample of 9133 respondents. RESULTS: Older adults whose children migrated over 500 km were more likely to experience depression compared to those with no migrant child or all children within 500 km. Among intergenerational support, frequent parent-child contact mitigated the effects of migration on depression in older parents with all their children who migrated over 500 km. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that older parents with migrant children over 500 km away should be considered a vulnerable population at risk for mental health in CEE countries. It is crucial for local governments and policymakers to address these challenges through improving integrated mental health and social programs for better mental health outcomes among older adults in CEE countries.

Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) is a high production volume chemical that has been subject to thorough toxicological investigations. Animal studies with the substance were conducted with either Fischer 344 or Sprague Dawley CD rats. While the pharmacokinetic fate of D4 in Fischer rats is well understood, little information exists on Sprague Dawley CD rats, where reproductive effects have been demonstrated. The objective of this study was to explore the pharmacokinetic behavior in both rats, and to identify potential strain-specific differences. Fischer and Sprague Dawley CD rats were exposed for six hours to 700 ppm of 14C-D4 vapor either with or without preceding 14-day exposure to non-radiolabeled D4. Time-course data in blood, tissues and excreta were obtained through 168 h post-exposure and analyzed for both total radioactivity and parent D4. The data confirm that repeated exposure results in increased metabolism in both rat strains, confirming the findings of earlier studies of auto-induction of CYP2B1/2 by D4. The results also indicate that D4 is subject to strain-specific pharmacokinetic behavior, and that Fischer rats appear to metabolize D4 to a greater extent than Sprague Dawley CD rats.

This study compared effects of conventional ozonation and electrochemical oxidation (EO) on the formation of aldehydes and aliphatic carboxylic acids produced via the oxidation of natural organic matter (NOM) present in a low-mineralized surface water with a relatively low NOM concentration. Conventional ozonation and EO were effective in degrading the aromatic moiety of NOM characterized by the absorbance at 254 nm. Yields of aliphatic carboxylic acids in the ozone treated water were dominated by formate, acetate and oxalate, while no acetate was observed in the case of EO treatment. The speciation of aldehydes was similar in the case of ozonation and EO treatment, but the aldehydes yields were notably higher for ozonation. The presence of the elevated carbonate concentration moderated the changes in disinfection by-products (DBPs) concentration in the EO treated water due to the interception of ∙OH by HCO3-, while it did not affect ozonation treatment. This study allows gaining more insights into the nature of processes characteristic and optimization of disinfections based on ozonation and EO methods.

Multimedia fate and transport models (MFTMs) describe how chemicals behave in the environment based on their inherent properties and the characteristics of receiving systems. We critically review the use of MFTMs for understanding the behavior of volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS). MFTMs have been used to predict the fate of VMS in wastewater treatment, rivers, lakes, marine systems, and the atmosphere, and to assess bioaccumulation and trophic transfers. More widely, they have been used to assess the overall persistence, long-range transport potential (LRTP), and the propensity for atmosphere-surface exchange. The application of MFTMs for VMS requires particularly careful selection of model inputs because the properties of VMS differ from those of most organic compounds. For example, although n-octanol/water partition coefficient (KOW ) values are high, air:water partition coefficient (KAW ) values are also high and n-octanol/air partition coefficient (KOA ) values are relatively low. In addition, organic carbon/water partition coefficient (KOC ) values are substantially lower than expectations based on KOW . This means that most empirical relationships between KOC and KOW are not appropriate. Good agreement between modeled and measured concentrations in air, sediment, and biota indicates that our understanding of environmental fate is reasonable. VMS compounds are "fliers" that principally partition to the atmosphere, implying high LRTP, although they have low redeposition potential. They are degraded in air (half-lives 3-10 days) and, thus, have low overall persistence. In water, exposure can be limited by hydrolysis, volatilization, and partitioning to sediments (where degradation half-lives are likely to be high). In food webs, they are influenced by metabolism in biota, which tends to drive trophic dilution (i.e., trophic magnification factors are often but not always <1). Key remaining uncertainties include the following: (i) the strength and direction of the temperature dependence for KOC ; (ii) the fate of atmospheric reaction products; and (iii) the magnitude of emissions to wastewater. Lee et al. (2019) recently proposed that volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) be considered as emerging contaminants in the Arctic environment based on the results of suspect and non-target screening of environmental samples collected from Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. In any analytical program, it is of critical importance to be able to discern if the identification of analytes is due to true presence in the sampled environmental media or if contamination occurred during sample handling and analysis, leading to false positive detection. This is particularly important for VMS due to their ubiquity in consumer products, sample containers, and analytical instrumentation, thus requiring robust quality control (QC) procedures to support the validity of results. Although Lee et al. (2019) concluded that VMS in the environmental samples originated from potential long-range transport and deposition, it is most likely that local point sources account for their presence. Additionally, there is low confidence in the validity of the reported detection of VMS in the sampled environmental media as this study does not include any of the necessary QC to determine whether the VMS detected would be due to contamination or indicative of presence in the environment.

BACKGROUND: To gain insights into the socio-economic and political determinants of ill health and access to healthcare in North Korea. METHODS: A retrospective survey using respondent-driven sampling conducted in 2014-15 among 383 North Korean refugees newly resettling in South Korea, asking about experiences of illness and utilization of healthcare while in North Korea, analyzed according to measures of political, economic and human rights indicators. RESULTS: Although the Public Health Act claims that North Korea provides the comprehensive free care system, respondents reported high levels of unmet need and, among those obtaining care, widespread informal expenditure. Of the respondents, 55.1% (95%CI, 47.7-63.7%) had received healthcare for the most recent illness episode. High informal costs (53.8%, 95%CI, 45.1-60.8%) and a lack of medicines (39.5%, 95%CI, 33.3-47.1%) were reported as major healthcare barriers resulting in extensive self-medication with narcotic analgesics (53.7%, 95%CI, 45.7-61.2%). In multivariate logistic regressions, party membership was associated with better access to healthcare (Adjusted OR (AOR) = 2.34, 95%CI, 1.31-4.18), but household income (AOR = 0.40, 95%CI 0.21-0.78) and informal market activity (AOR = 0.29, 95%CIs 0.15-0.50) with reduced access. Respondents who could not enjoy political and economic rights were substantially more likely to report illness and extremely reduced access to care, even with life-threatening conditions. CONCLUSIONS: There are large disparities in health and access to healthcare in North Korea, associated with political and economic inequalities. The scope to use these findings to bring about change is limited but they can inform international agencies and humanitarian organizations working in this unique setting.

We have reviewed a paper titled "Bioaccumulation of Methyl Siloxanes in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and in an Estuarine Food Web in Northeastern China" by Xue et al., which was published in the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology in 2019. In the paper, the authors presented and discussed the measured bioconcentration factors (BCFs), biomagnification factors (BMFs), and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) of selected volatile methylsiloxanes in Shuangtaizi estuary in China. Although we appreciate their efforts for sample collection and data analysis, we have identified significant errors in calculations of BCFs, TMFs, and BMFs, as well as animal welfare issues and food web trophic level assumptions. Based on the data, we have attempted to correct some of the analysis and offered a more complete and robust interpretation of the related data, when possible. Collectively, these errors would likely lead to very different conclusions than yours in the paper.

Herein, we report chemoselective trifluoroethylation routes of unmasked 2-arylquinazolin-4(3 H)-ones using mesityl(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)iodonium triflate at room temperature. Homologous C-, O-, and N-functionalized subclasses are accessed in a straightforward manner with a wide substrate scope. These chemoselective branching events are driven by Pd-catalyzed ortho-selective C-H activation at the pendant aryl ring and base-promoted reactivity modulation of the amide group, leveraging the intrinsic directing capability and competing pronucleophilicity of the quinazolin-4(3 H)-one framework. Furthermore, outstanding photostability of the quinazolin-4(3 H)-one family associated with nonradiative decay is presented.

INTRODUCTION: The gravity, scale, and nature of human rights violations are severe in North Korea. Little is known about the mental health consequences of the lifelong exposures to these violations. METHODS: In 2014-2015, a retrospective study was conducted among 383 North Korean refugees in South Korea using respondent-driven sampling to access this hidden population. This study collected information on the full range of political and economic rights violations and measured post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression symptoms, and social functioning by standard instruments. Multivariate regression analysis was performed with the adjustment of political, economic, and demographic variables in 2016-2017. RESULTS: The results indicate elevated symptoms of anxiety (60.1%, 95% CI=54.3%, 65.7%), depression (56.3%, 95% CI=50.8%, 61.9%), and post-traumatic stress disorder (22.8%, 95% CI=18.6%, 27.4%), which are significantly associated with exposures to political rights violations (ten to 19 items versus non-exposure: anxiety AOR=16.78, p<0.001, depression AOR=12.52, p<0.001, post-traumatic stress disorder AOR=16.71, p<0.05), and economic rights violations (seven to 13 items versus non-exposure: anxiety AOR=5.68, p<0.001, depression AOR=4.23, p<0.01, post-traumatic stress disorder AOR=5.85, p<0.05). The mean score of social functioning was also lower in those who were exposed to political (adjusted difference= -13.29, p<0.001) and economic rights violations (adjusted difference= -11.20, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights mental health consequences of lifelong human rights violations in North Korea. Beyond the conventional approach, it suggests the need for a collaborative preventive response from global health and human rights activists to address human rights in regard to mental health determinants of the 20 million people in North Korea.

We investigated the response times of eight volatile methylsiloxanes (VMSs) in environmental systems at different scales from local to global, with a particular focus on overall loss rates after cessation of emissions. In part, this is driven by proposals to restrict the use of some of these compounds in certain products in Europe. The GloboPOP model estimated low absolute Arctic Contamination Potentials for all VMSs and rapid response times in all media except sediment. VMSs are predicted to be distributed predominantly in air where they react with OH radicals, leading to short response times. After cessation of emissions VMSs concentrations in the environment are expected to decrease rapidly from current levels. Response times in specific water and sediment systems were evaluated using a dynamic QWASI model. Response times were sensitive to both physico-chemical properties and environmental characteristics. Degradation was predicted to play the most important role in determining response times in water and sediment. In the case of the lowest molecular weight VMSs such as L2 and D3, response times were essentially independent of environmental characteristics due to fast hydrolysis in water and sediment. However, response times for the other VMSs are system-specific. They are relatively short in shallow water bodies but increase with depth due to the diminishing role of volatilization on concentration change as volume to surface area ratio increases. In sediment, degradation and resuspension rates also contribute most to the response times. The estimated response times for local environments are useful for planning future monitoring programs.

This study utilized probabilistic risk assessment techniques to compare field sediment concentrations of the cyclic volatile methylsiloxane (cVMS) materials octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4, CAS # 556-67-2), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5, CAS # 541-02-6), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6, CAS # 540-97-6) to effect levels for these compounds determined in laboratory chronic toxicity tests with benthic organisms. The concentration data for D4/D5/D6 in sediment were individually sorted and the 95th centile concentrations determined in sediment on an organic carbon (OC) fugacity basis. These concentrations were then compared to interpolated 5th centile benthic sediment no-observed effect concentration (NOEC) fugacity levels, calculated from a distribution of chronic D4/D5/D6 toxicologic assays per OECD guidelines using a variety of standard benthic species. The benthic invertebrate fugacity biota NOEC values were then compared to field-measured invertebrate biota fugacity levels to see if risk assessment evaluations were similar on a field sediment and field biota basis. No overlap was noted for D4 and D5 95th centile sediment and biota fugacity levels and their respective 5th centile benthic organism NOEC values. For D6, there was a small level of overlap at the exposure 95th centile sediment fugacity and the 5th centile benthic organism NOEC fugacity value; the sediment fugacities indicate that a negligible risk (1%) exists for benthic species exposed to D6. In contrast, there was no indication of risk when the field invertebrate exposure 95th centile biota fugacity and the 5th centile benthic organism NOEC fugacity values were compared.

An accurate understanding of the fate of volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) in air is crucial for determining their persistence and concentrations in the environment. Although oxidation by atmospheric hydroxyl radicals (•OH) is considered as a major degradation mechanism for airborne VMS, the existing bimolecular rate constants with •OH measured and modeled for any given VMS compound varied greatly, depending on the approaches used to generate the data. The objectives of the present study were to measure •OH reaction rate constants for 4 cyclic and 4 linear VMS based on a relative rate method using a newly designed atmospheric chamber and to establish structure-reactivity relationships for the kinetics. In the past, the reaction rate constants for VMS were generally recognized to increase with the number of the methyl groups per molecule, the only differential factor in the existing models. However, the new measurements indicated that molecular structure should also be considered in the prediction of the reaction rates. Better empirical models were developed by simple and multiple linear regressions of the measured values from the present study and the literature. A high correlation existed for the reaction rates with the number of the methyl group attached at 2 distinct siloxane structures (i.e., linear and cyclic VMS). Even better correlations were obtained with one or 2 molecular descriptors that are directly related to the size of VMS, which, in turn, not only depend on the number of methyl groups, but the linear/cyclic structures as well for permethylsiloxanes. We seek to contribute to the improved regulatory use of mass balance models to complement environmental monitoring data by applying the steady-state Quantitative Water Air Sediment Interactive model (QWASI) and a novel unsteady-state QWASI model. A steady-state model can yield not only a useful simulation of chemical fate under near steady-state conditions, but it can provide insights into the likely influences of increasing or decreasing emission rates, temperature changes, and unexpectedly high sensitivities to model parameters that may require additional investigation. We compared the consistency of insights from both types of model, in the expectation that while the dynamic model provides a closer simulation of actual conditions, for many purposes a simple, less computationally demanding, more transparent and less expensive model may be adequate for many regulatory purposes. We investigated the response times of decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) and PCB-180 concentrations in water and sediment under three emission scenarios in three different aquatic systems, namely Lake Ontario, Oslofjord, and Lake Pepin. D5 was predicted to be removed largely by hydrolysis and volatilization in Lake Ontario and Oslofjord whereas it is subject to removal by advective loss in Lake Pepin. The half-times of D5 water concentration to a stepwise reduction in emission were <60 days in all three water bodies. In contrast, the predicted half-times were 0.53, 1.4, and 2.9 years in Lake Pepin, Oslofjord, and Lake Ontario, respectively. We also explored how uncertainties in input parameters propagate into uncertainties of concentrations in water and sediments possibly necessitating more accurate values.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a minimal concentration of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) in terms of quantitative and qualitative analyses of newly formed bone in a rabbit maxillary sinus model. METHODS: In 7 rabbits, sinus windows were prepared bilaterally. Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) loaded with 0.05 mg/mL BMP-2 was grafted into one sinus (the BMP group) and saline-soaked BCP was placed into the other (the control group) in each animal. The animals were allowed an 8-week healing period before being sacrificed. Specimens including the augmented area and surrounding tissues were then removed and evaluated both radiographically and histologically. RESULTS: There was a difference in the mineralization of new bone between the groups. In the BMP group, the greater part of the new bone consisted of mature lamellar bone with an evident trabecular pattern, whereas the control group showed mostly woven bone, consisting only partially of lamellar bone. Histometrically, the area of new bone was significantly greater (4.55±1.35 mm2 vs. 2.99±0.86 mm2) in the BMP group than in the control group (P<0.05); however, the total augmentation volumes were not significantly different between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, it can be suggested that a minimal concentration of BMP-2 (0.05 mg/mL) had an osteoinductive effect with accelerated mineralization in a rabbit sinus model using a BCP carrier.

Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) are field-based measurements of the bioaccumulation behavior of chemicals in food-webs. TMFs can provide valuable insights into the bioaccumulation behavior of chemicals. However, bioaccumulation metrics such as TMF may be subject to considerable uncertainty as a consequence of systematic bias and the influence of confounding variables. This study seeks to investigate the role of systematic bias resulting from spatially-variable concentrations in water and sediments and biotransformation rates on the determination of TMF. For this purpose, a multibox food-web bioaccumulation model was developed to account for spatial concentration differences and movement of organisms on chemical concentrations in aquatic biota and TMFs. Model calculated and reported field TMFs showed good agreement for persistent polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and biotransformable phthalate esters (PEs) in a marine aquatic food-web. Model testing showed no systematic bias and good precision in the estimation of the TMF for PCB congeners but an apparent underestimation of model calculated TMFs, relative to reported field TMFs, for PEs. A model sensitivity analysis showed that sampling designs that ignore the presence of concentration gradients may cause systematically biased and misleading TMF values. The model demonstrates that field TMFs are most sensitive to concentration gradients and species migration patterns for substances that are subject to a low degree of biomagnification or trophic dilution. The model is useful in anticipating the effect of spatial concentration gradients on the determination of the TMF; guiding species collection strategies in TMF studies; and interpretation of the results of field bioaccumulation studies in study locations where spatial differences in chemical concentration exist.

This study investigated sorption and desorption behaviors of airborne volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) such as octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) on nine major primary and secondary atmospheric aerosols at a relative humidity (RH) of 30%. It was found that sorption and desorption of VMS took place via a two-phase process, which included an initial rapid step, followed by slower subsequent step. The initial rapid step was favored especially at low concentrations. Equilibrium sorption isotherms were slightly better fitted to Polanyi-Manes sorption model than Langmuir model except D4 on black carbon and D5 on sea salt. Values of apparent aerosol-air partition coefficients ranged 0.09-50.4 L/m(2) for D4 and 2.1-284 L/m(2) for D5 with carbon black having the largest values. Some of aerosols such as carbon black and sea salts reversibly interacted with D4 and D5 whereas other aerosols such as kaolinite and sulfates showed highly irreversible sorption for the VMS, especially at low concentrations. As sorption density of D4 and D5 on kaolinite was decreased from 1100 to 250 µg/m(2), the irreversible fraction was increased from 27% to 80%.The mechanism responsible for these differences is essential for a better understanding and prediction of atmospheric chemistry of VMS as affected by the presence of atmospheric aerosols.

Both correlational and experimental studies examined how perceived emotional responses of the majority of Americans to 9/11 affect individuals' support for government counter-terrorism policies (i.e., military intervention, anti-immigration, restricting civil liberties). Study 1 found associations between perceived collective emotions (i.e., anger, fear) and individuals' own corresponding emotions and those between perceived collective anger and counter-terrorism policy support. Individuals' own anger mediated the associations of collective anger with policy support. Using experimental manipulations, Study 2 showed that collective anger had a significant effect on individuals' own anger and one significant and two marginal effects on counter-terrorism policy support. Individuals' own anger mediated one of the marginal effects of collective anger on policy support. Implications of these findings are discussed in the context of terrorist threat.

The environmental sources, fate, transport, and routes of exposure of decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5; CAS no. 541-02-6) are reviewed in the present study, with the objective of contributing to effective risk evaluation and assessment of this and related substances. The present review, which is part of a series of studies discussing aspects of an effective risk evaluation and assessment, was prompted in part by the findings of a Board of Review undertaken to comment on a decision by Environment Canada made in 2008 to subject D5 to regulation as a toxic substance. The present review focuses on the early stages of the assessment process and how information on D5's physical-chemical properties, uses, and fate in the environment can be integrated to give a quantitative description of fate and exposure that is consistent with available monitoring data. Emphasis is placed on long-range atmospheric transport and fate in water bodies receiving effluents from wastewater treatment plants (along with associated sediments) and soils receiving biosolids. The resulting exposure estimates form the basis for assessments of the resulting risk presented in other studies in this series. Recommendations are made for developing an improved process by which D5 and related substances can be evaluated effectively for risk to humans and the environment.
