RESUMO

This study investigated the utility of garlic powder as a functional ingredient. The aim was to develop fish cakes with improved functionality and sensory preference based on the antioxidant activity and quality characteristics. Increasing amounts of garlic powder in the prepared fish cakes were associated with increasing total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radical scavenging activity, and reducing power. Furthermore, electronic tongue and electronic nose analyses showed an increased the intensity of umami and sourness and increased the levels of volatile compounds. The lowest trimethylamine peak corresponded to the highest amount of garlic powder. Sensory evaluation indicated that 3% garlic powder had the highest score for all criteria. Fishy odor decreased as the proportion of garlic powder increased. These findings suggest that the addition of 3% garlic powder improves quality characteristics, sensory preference, and antioxidant activity of fish cakes.

Functional flavonoid production is a new agenda in the agricultural industry, and young barley leaves (YBL) are one of the highlighted crops due to their health-beneficial flavonoid, saponarin. For the year-round cultivation of a high saponarin content of YBL, abiotic signal effects on the biosynthesis and metabolism in YBL need to be understood clearly. In this research, the effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related abiotic signals, such as light, potassium, and sodium, were investigated on the biosynthetic metabolism in YBL cultivation under artificial lights. A higher quantity of blue-rich white light (6500 K of light temperature) irradiation enhanced ROS levels and the related enzyme activities (APX and CAT), as well as photosynthesis and saponarin amount, while red-rich white light (3000 K of light temperature) increased the photosynthesis only. In addition, 1.0 g L-1 K+ treatment in water slightly reduced ROS levels and increased saponarin accumulation in YBL. These blue-rich light and K+ supplemental conditions relatively increased OGT expression and reduced 4-coumaric acid and isovitexin as saponarin precursors. Furthermore, the relative ratio of lutonarin as an oxidized product of saponarin increased in increments of light quantity. Finally, the abiotic conditions for saponarin production were optimized with the mixture solution treatment of 1.0 g L-1 Na+ and 1.0 g L-1 K+ under 500 PPFD of 6500 K light, and the saponarin amount per leaf was 219.5 µg plant-1; it was comparable amount with that under sunlight condition.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the quality characteristics, antioxidant activity, and sensory traits of meringue Jeung-pyun with different amounts of cacao bean husk powder. Based on our analyses, high cacao bean husk content resulted in an increase in certain Jeung-pyun qualities, such as the L values, b values, hardness, gumminess, and number of pores, whereas the moisture content, pH, pore size, adhesiveness, cohesiveness, and chewiness significantly decreased. Electronic tongue analysis showed that the intensity of sourness, saltiness, and umami increased with the amount of cacao bean husk added. For the sensory characteristics, C6 demonstrated the highest ranking for all test items. Furthermore, it was found that the addition of cacao bean husks increased the antioxidant activity of the Jeung-pyun (p < 0.001). Therefore, these results suggest that Jeung-pyun produced with a mixing ratio of C6 has excellent qualities, antioxidant activities, and sensory characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The restoration and management of the uninvolved side have been emphasized to prevent a second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and to ensure that athletes return to sports after ACL reconstruction. OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors influencing the single leg hop test (SLHT) and single leg vertical jump test (SLVJT) at 1 year postoperatively after ACL reconstruction in both the involved and uninvolved sides. METHODS: Ninety-four patients who underwent ACL reconstruction were assessed at 1 year postoperatively. Multiple regression models included eight independent variables with two dependent variables (SLHT and SLVJT.), each on the involved and uninvolved side. RESULTS: On the involved side, the Y balance test (YBT), extensor peak torque per body weight (PT/BW), Biodex balance system anteroposterior index (BBS-API), and sex accounted for 53.9% of the variance in SLHT (P= 0.002), and extensor PT/BW and YBT accounted for 26.3% of the variance in SLVJT (P= 0.027). On the uninvolved side, YBT, sex, age, BBS-API, and flexor PT/BW accounted for 47.0% of the variance in SLHT (P= 0.046), and flexor PT/BW, YBT, and age accounted for 44.9% of the variance in SLVJT (P= 0.002). CONCLUSION: Knee extensor strength on the involved side and flexor strength on the uninvolved side influence the two functional performance tests. The YBT was an important factor in the two functional performance tests in both sides. Anteroposterior stability was the only factor that influenced the SLHT bilaterally.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that metabolize sugars to obtain energy and produce a large amount of lactate through the process are well known for their benefits. However, they can be used on a large scale only when good storage stability is guaranteed. The vitality and stability of several LAB strains were effectively protected in this investigation by L-theanine at 1% of the appropriate concentration (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum MG5023, Enterococcus faecium MG5232, Lactococcus lactis MG4668, Streptococcus thermophilus MG5140, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis MG741). The inclusion of L-theanine as a protective agent significantly enhanced the viability of all strains throughout the freeze-drying process compared to that of the non-coated probiotics. The efficacy of L-theanine in improving bacterial stability and survivability was evaluated using accelerated stability tests, gastrointestinal (GI) tract survivability tests, and adhesion assays with intestinal epithelial cells. The cell surface was covered with substances including L-theanine, according to morphological findings, providing efficient defense against a variety of external stresses. Therefore, by exerting anti-freezing and anti-thawing properties, the adoption of L-theanine as a new and efficient protective agent may improve the stability and viability of a variety of probiotics.

Background: There is no consensus established on postoperative rehabilitation after medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) repair, including when and how physicians can apply range of motion (ROM) exercise, weight-bearing (WB), brace use, and return to sports (RTS). The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on postoperative rehabilitation characteristics of MMPRT repair regarding ROM, WB, brace use, and RTS. Methods: A literature search was performed using the Medline/PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Embase databases. The inclusion criteria were English language, human clinical studies, and studies describing rehabilitation protocols after MMPRT repair such as ROM, WB, brace use, and RTS. Abstracts, case reports, cohort studies, controlled laboratory studies, human cadaveric or animal studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses were excluded. Results: Thirteen studies were included. Of the 12 ROM studies, ROM was started immediately within 1 or 2 days after operation in 6 studies and after 2 to 3 weeks of knee immobilization in the rest. Of the 13 WB studies, partial weight-bearing was initiated 1 to 4 weeks after operation in 8 studies and 6 weeks in the rest. Of the 9 brace studies, patients were immobilized by a splint for 2 weeks in 3 studies, and in the rest, a brace with full extension was applied for 3 to 6 weeks after several days of splint application. Of the 7 RTS studies, RTS was allowed at 6 months in 6 studies and 5 to 7 months in 1 study. Conclusions: This systematic review revealed conservative rehabilitation protocols were more widely adapted as ROM and WB were restricted at certain degrees during postoperative periods in most protocols analyzed. However, it is impossible to identify a consensus on rehabilitation protocols as the protocols analyzed in this review were distinct each other and heterogeneous. In the future, a well-designed comparative study among different rehabilitation protocols is essential to establish a consensus.

Background: Lower limb balance ability is reduced after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). However, the recovery of balance based on functional test scores after ACLR is not known because the correlation between balance and clinical scores remains unclear. We aimed to analyze the correlation between lower limb balance assessed by functional test and clinical knee test scores after ACLR. Methods: We evaluated lower limb balance using the anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) of the Biodex Balance System (BBS). Patients underwent clinical tests to evaluate the knee, including the Tegner activity score, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score, Lysholm score, and KT-2000 arthrometer measurement, hamstring per quadriceps muscle strength ratio at 60°/sec (HQ ratio), and functional performance tests (single-leg hop and single-leg vertical jump tests) 1 year after ACLR. We used a paired t-test to compare continuous preoperative and postoperative variables and Pearson's correlation coefficient to determine the relationship between BBS-APSI and clinical scores. Results: Forty-eight patients (35 men and 13 women; mean age, 28.9 ± 8.3 years) were included. The follow-up period and BBS-APSI were 12.4 ± 2.0 months and 0.9 ± 0.4, respectively. Tegner activity score, IKDC subjective score, Lysholm score, and KT-2000 arthrometer measurement improved significantly postoperatively (p < 0.001). BBS-APSI was correlated with the Tegner activity score (r = -0.335, p = 0.020), IKDC subjective score (r = -0.301, p = 0.037), Lysholm score (r = -0.323, p = 0.025), single-leg hop test results (r = -0.300, p = 0.038), and single-leg vertical jump test results (r = -0.336, p = 0.019). There was no correlation between KT-2000 arthrometer measurement and HQ ratio. Conclusions: BBS-APSI was correlated with functional performance test scores after ACLR, rendering the BBS-APSI as a useful assessment tool to evaluate postoperative functional recovery. Continuously improving balance after ACLR could be useful for functional recovery after surgery.

Root repair can prevent osteoarthritis (OA) by restoring hoop tension in medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs). This study aims to investigate bone marrow edema (BME) lesions known to be associated with OA following MMPRTs. Methods: Thirty patients with transtibial pull-out repair were recruited. Subchondral BME lesions were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 1-year follow-ups. Participants were categorized into three groups: no change of BME lesions (group one), improved BME lesions (group two) and worsened BME lesions (group three). Clinical scores and radiological outcomes, specifically Kellgren-Lawrence grade, medial joint space width and cartilage grade and meniscal extrusion were evaluated and compared between groups. Results: After surgery, twenty-three patients with no BME, three patients with BME lesions on the medial femoral condyle, one patient with BME lesions on the medial tibia plateau and three patients with BME lesions on both were investigated. A total of 20 patients in group one (66.7%) showed no change in BME lesions. In group two, seven patients (23.3%) presented with improved BME lesions. Only three patients (10%) showed worsened BME lesions (group three). Moreover, Lysholm scores and the rate of progression of cartilage grades were significantly worse in group three patients. Meniscal extrusion was significantly reduced in group two, whereas extrusion was significantly progressed in group three. Conclusion: Patients with worsened BME lesions showed less favorable outcomes than other patients. A decrease in meniscal extrusion can have a positive effect on BME lesions after root repair.

BACKGROUND: The Y-Balance test (YBT) is commonly used to evaluate balance after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). However, several studies have also used it as a functional performance test (FPT). PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the relationship between YBT scores and measures of knee joint laxity, static balance, knee flexor and extensor torque and strength ratio, and FPTs. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Fifty-nine patients who underwent ACLR using hamstring autografts were retrospectively analyzed. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the strength of the association between scores on the YBT and selected outcomes including laxity measured via the KT-2000 arthrometer, static balance measured via the Biodex Balance System, isokinetic muscle torque and hamstring-to-quadriceps (HQ) ratio, and performance on the single leg hop test and the single leg vertical jump test. RESULTS: Forty-six men and 13 women were included. The mean age and follow-up period were 29.6 ± 9.6 years and 12.4 ± 2.1 months, respectively. The KT-2000 arthrometer measures, Biodex Balance System scores, and HQ ratio measurements were not significantly correlated with the YBT scores. All YBT scores, except the YBT-anterior score, correlated with the isokinetic extensor and flexor torques (r-values: 0.271-0.520). All the YBT scores had significant weak to moderate correlations with the single leg hop test and single leg vertical jump test scores: YBT-anterior (r = 0.303, r = 0.258), YBT-posteromedial (r = 0.475, r = 0.412), YBT-posterolateral (r = 0.525, r = 0.377), and YBT-composite (r = 0.520, r = 0.412). CONCLUSION: Post-ACLR YBT scores correlated with functional performance and muscle strength, but not with static balance, joint laxity, and HQ ratios. The YBT scores as a measure of balance are related to improved functional performance and isokinetic torque measures. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3.

BACKGROUND: GreenCross Wellbeing Corporation (GCWB) 106 is a food item based on Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum extract. It has an inhibitory effect on joint inflammation. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the efficacy and safety of GCWB106 for osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee joint. METHODS: Overall, 121 participants with mild OA were recruited and randomly divided into two groups. One group received GCWB106 for 12 weeks and the other group received placebo for 12 weeks. Outcomes were evaluated using the Korean-Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Index (K-WOMAC), visual analog scale, Korean Short Form Health Survey 36 score, and laboratory test results. RESULTS: After 12 weeks of study treatment, the GCWB106 group exhibited a significant improvement compared with the placebo group in overall K-WOMAC score (P = .042) and K-WOMAC physical function score (P = .015). The GCWB106 group showed significant improvement in the visual analog scale pain score (P < .001) compared with the placebo group after 6 weeks and 12 weeks; no adverse drug reactions or serious adverse events were reported in either group. CONCLUSION: GCWB106 can safely reduce pain and improve knee function with therapeutic effects in OA of the knee joint. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, Level I.

Compounds of the cell walls of heat-killed lactic acid bacteria show immunomodulatory properties which boost immunological systems, and are used ad postbiotics (paraprobiotics). In this study, we used 17 different heat-killed isolates as postbiotics and evaluated their anti-inflammatory potential on the expression of proinflammatory mediators and cellular signaling pathways of murine macrophage, RAW 264.7 cells. Bifidobacterium bifidum MG731 showed the high 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity (90.6%), followed by Bifidobacterium lactis MG741 (59.6%). The Bi. lactis MG741 showed the high ABTS free radical scavenging activity (99.5%), followed by Lactobacillus plantarum MG989 (98.9%), Lactobacillus salivarius MG242 (97.1%), and Bi. bifidum MG731 (96.1%). In addition, Bi. bifidum MG731 showed the lowest nitric oxide production (4.28 µM), followed by B. lactis MG741 (10.80 µM), L. salivarius MG242 (14.60 µM), and L. plantarum MG989 (19.60 µM). The selected strains showed a decreased nitric oxide production via downregulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase 2, which were upregulated via LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) including acetic, propionic, and butyric acid were produced by four strains. The Bi. bifidum MG731 showed total SCFAs production (4998.6 µg/g), Bi. lactis MG741 (2613.9 µg/g), L. salivarius MG242 (1456.1 µg/g), and L. plantarum MG989 (630.2 µg/g). These results indicated that the various selected strains may possess an anti-inflammatory potential and provide a molecular basis for the development of functional probiotics.

Heat-killed lactic acid bacteria perform immunomodulatory functions and are advantageous as probiotics, considering their long product shelf-life, easy storage, and convenient transportation. In this study, we aimed to develop appropriate heat treatments for industrial preparation of probiotics with antioxidant activity. Among 75 heat-killed strains, Lactococcus lactis MG5125 revealed the highest nitric oxide inhibition (86.2%), followed by Lactobacillus acidophilus MG4559 (86.0%), Lactobacillus plantarum MG5270 (85.7%), Lactobacillus fermentum MG4510 (85.3%), L. plantarum MG5239 (83.9%), L. plantarum MG5289 (83.2%), and L. plantarum MG5203 (81.8%). Moreover, the heat-killed selected strains markedly inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 expression. The use of heat-killed bacteria with intact bio-functionality can elongate the shelf-life and simplify the food processing steps of probiotic foods, given their high stability. The antioxidant and immune-modulatory activities of the heat-killed strains selected in this study indicate a strong potential for their utilization probiotic products manufacturing.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate the improvement effect of white ginseng extract (GS-KG9) on D-galactosamine (Ga1N)-induced oxidative stress and liver injury. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups. Rats were orally administrated with GS-KG9 (300, 500, or 700 mg/kg) or silymarin (25 mg/kg) for 2 weeks. The rats of the GS-KG9- and silymarin-treated groups and a control group were then intraperitoneally injected Ga1N at a concentration of 650 mg/kg for 4 days. To investigate the protective effect of GS-KG9 against GalN-induced liver injury, blood liver function indicators, anti-oxidative stress indicators, and histopathological features were analyzed. RESULTS: Serum biochemical analysis indicated that GS-KG9 ameliorated the elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in GalN-treated rats. The hepatoprotective effects of GS-KG9 involved enhancing components of the hepatic antioxidant defense system, including glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). In addition, GS-KG9 treatment inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) production induced by GalN treatment in hepatocytes and significantly increased the expression levels of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) proteins, which are antioxidant proteins. In particular, by histological analyses bases on hematoxylin and eosin, Masson's trichrome, α-smooth muscle actin, and transforming growth factor-ß1 staining, we determined that the administration of 500 mg/kg GS-KG9 inhibited hepatic inflammation and fibrosis due to the excessive accumulation of collagen. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that GS-KG9 improves GalN-induced liver inflammation, necrosis, and fibrosis by attenuating oxidative stress. Therefore, GS-KG9 may be considered a useful candidate in the development of a natural preventive agent against liver injury.

Black ginseng (BG), which is produced by repeated steaming and drying of fresh ginseng, has various pharmacological and therapeutic properties. This study investigated the anti-hyperglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of BG ethanolic extract in type 2 diabetic db/db mice. The levels of fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, insulin levels and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values were decreased in the groups fed BG extract (BG) (100 and 900 mg/kg BW/day), compared to the control group (CON). In the BG compared with the CON, hepatic steatosis in the liver and the size of adipocytes in muscle tissue were improved. The administration of BG regulated the glucose transporter type (GLUT) 4 and 2, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) α and γ in muscle and liver. Moreover, ginsenosides (Rh4, Rg5, and Rk1), which profiled by HPLC, regulated the markers for lipid metabolism and glucose metabolism; PPARs and GLUTs in muscle and C2C12 rather than liver cells and tissue. These findings suggested that ginsenosides (Rh4, Rg5, and Rk1) from BG extract can ameliorate type 2 diabetes through their anti-hyperglycemic and hypolipidemic effects.

Xylitol is a valuable substance utilized by food and biochemical industries. NAD(P)H-dependent xylose reductase (XR)-encoded by the yeast KmXYL1 gene-is the key enzyme which facilitates reduction of xylose to xylitol. Multi-copy integration of a mutant KmXYL1 (mKmXYL1) gene was carried out using thermotolerant yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus KCTC17555ΔURA3, in order to enhance xylitol production. After multi-copy integration, the highest xylitol producing strain was isolated and named K. marxianus 17555-JBP2. This strain exhibited 440% higher xylitol production than the parental strain at 30 °C. Due to a multi-copy integration of the mKmXYL1 gene, various additional differences between K. marxianus 17555-JBP2 and the parental strain were observed, including a 66% increase in NAD(P)H-dependent XR activity at high temperature (45 °C). Quantitative real-time PCR and transcriptome analysis demonstrated that, relative to the parent strain, K. marxianus 17555-JBP2 exhibited two more copies of mKmXY1 genes and a 9.63-fold elevation in transcription of NAD(P)H-dependent XR. After optimization of bioreactor fermentation conditions (agitation speed), high-temperature (40 °C) xylitol productivity of K. marxianus 17555-JBP2 exhibited an 81% improvement relative to the parental strain. In this study, we demonstrated that the overexpression of endogenous XR could enhance xylitol productivity at 40 °C by thermotolerant K. marxianus.

In this study, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with antioxidative and probiotic activities were isolated from the vaginas of Korean women and from fermented food. Among 34 isolated LAB strains, four strains (MG4221, MG4231, MG4261, and MG4270) exhibited inhibitory activity against nitric oxide production. The MG4221 and MG4270 strains were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, and MG4231 and MG4261 were identified as Lactobacillus fermentum. These strains were able to tolerate pepsin and pancreatin, which is required for probiotic potential. The antioxidant effects of culture filtrates obtained from selected strains included 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity. Most of the culture filtrates had effective DPPH scavenging activity.In conclusion, the selected strains have significant activities and are potentially applicable to the development of functional foods. These strains might also contribute to the prevention and control of several diseases associated with oxidative stress, when used as functional probiotics.

Candida albicans is the most important Candida species causing vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). We investigated the potential of the probiotic strains Lactobacillus fermentum MG901 and L. plantarum MG989 towards control of C. albiacns. Cell viability tests following co-culturing with lactobacilli revealed that C. albicans cells lost metabolic activity and were eventually killed. Further studies revealed that MG901 and MG989 had high surface hydrophobicity that enhanced its adhesion ability to epithelial cell. The MG901 and MG989 showed coaggregation with E. coli and C. albicans to affect their adhesion and colonization. The adhesion of MG901 and MG989 to HT-29 cell and its inhibition of E. coli and C. albicans adherence to these cells were demonstrated. These incidences provided evidence of the possible colonization of MG901 and MG989 that would prevent binding and growth of E. coli and C. albicans onto intestinal epithelial cells. Following daily administration of 108 CFU of viable MG901 and MG989 orally, the animals' feces were examined for bacterial excretion. The potential probiotic MG901 and MG989 were found to persist for up to 6 days in the feces of mice. In conclusion, L. fermentum MG901 and L. plantarum MG989 have the potential to inhibit the yeast growth, which could possibly have played an important role in helping to clear VVC in vivo.

In this paper, we propose an intravitreal implantable magnetic micropump integrated with micro check valve capable of on-demand vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR)-targeted drug delivery for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other eye pathologies characterized by ocular neoangiogenesis. Precise on-demand drug release is realized by the deflection of the magnetic membrane assembly according to the external magnetic field, and the membrane assembly consists of a thin elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane and a cylindrical magnetic nanoparticle-PDMS composite block. Additionally, a micro check valve composed of two PDMS layers was integrated into the micropump to realize a diode-like one-directional drug delivery and prevent undesired drug diffusion. For specifically targeting VEGFR and suppression of VEGF-induced proliferation of microvascular endothelial cells, anti-Flt1 gold nanocomplexes are synthesized. In vitro and in vivo experiments and quantitative analysis are carried out in order to verify our proposed concept: precise drug release control according to the external magnetic field, targeting to microvascular endothelial cells, and efficient and on-demand drug delivery from the proposed micropump to the macular area of rabbit's eye.

Considering all the potential applications of organic electronics in portable, wearable, and implantable devices, it is of great importance to develop electroactive materials that possess mechanical reliability along with excellent electronic performance. The coexistence of these two attributes, however, is very difficult to achieve because there is an inverse relationship between the electrical properties and the mechanical flexibility, both of which are associated with the conjugation length and intermolecular ordering of the polymers. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and robust approach based on solution assembly of two different poly(3-hexylthiophene)s (P3HTs) with regioregularity (RR) contents of 97% and 66% to impart both electrical and mechanical properties to films for organic electronic applications. The 97% RR P3HT exhibits high electronic performance but poor mechanical resilience, and vice versa for the 66% RR P3HT. Selective crystallization of high RR P3HT induced by solution assembly allows the use of a one-step process to construct percolated networks of high RR P3HT nanowires (NWs) in a low RR P3HT matrix. Only 5 wt % of high RR P3HT NWs in a 95 wt % low RR P3HT matrix was required to produce hole mobilities comparable to that of pure high RR P3HT, and this blend film exhibited improvements by factors of 20 and 60 in elongation at break and toughness, respectively. Selective self-assembly of RR-controlled polymers allowed us to overcome the fragile nature of highly crystalline conjugated polymer films without sacrificing their electronic properties.

While solution assembly of conjugated block copolymers has been widely used to produce long 1-D nanowires (NWs), it remains a great challenge to provide a higher level of control over structure and function of the NWs. Herein, for the first time, we report the solution assembly of graft copolymers containing a conjugated polymer backbone in a selective solvent and demonstrate that their self-assembly behaviors can be manipulated by the molecular structures of the graft copolymers. A series of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-graft-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P3HT-g-P2VP) copolymers was designed with two different architectural parameters: grafting fraction (fg) and molecular weight of P2VP chains (Mn,P2VP) on the P3HT backbone. Interestingly, crystallization of the P3HT-g-P2VP copolymers was systematically modulated by changes in fg and Mn,P2VP, thus allowing for control of the growth kinetics and curvatures of solution-assembled NWs. When Mn,P2VP (4.4 to 15.1 kg/mol) or fg (2.8 to 9.2%) of the P3HT-g-P2VP polymers was increased, the crystallinity of the copolymers was reduced significantly. Steric hindrance from the grafted P2VP chains apparently modified the growth of NWs, leading to shorter NWs with a greater degree of curvature for graft copolymers with more hindrance. Therefore, we envision that such conjugated chain-based graft copolymers can be versatile building blocks for producing NWs with controlled length and shape, which can be important for tailoring the optical and electrical properties of NW-based devices.
