Dental caries has known as an infectious disease that is considered a serious global public health problem. Recently, report indicate that probiotics play a vital role in maintaining oral health. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevention effects of Lactobacillus plantarum Ln4 against dental infection by the pathogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans KCTC 5124 through biofilm formation inhibition. To evaluate such prevention effects against S. mutans KCTC 5124, antimicrobial activity, auto-aggregation, co-aggregation, cell surface hydrophobicity, total exopolysaccharide (EPS) production rate, and biofilm formation were analyzed. Results showed that L. plantarum Ln4 showed higher antimicrobial activity than L. rhamnosus GG (LGG). In the group treated with L. plantarum Ln4, the co-aggregation (58.85%), cell surface hydrophobicity (16.75%), and EPS production rate (73.29%) values were lower than those of LGG and the negative control. Additionally, crystal violet staining and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) revealed that L. plantarum Ln4 effectively inhibited biofilm formation in S. mutans KCTC 5124. Therefore, L. plantarum Ln4 could be used in the industry as a probiotics to prevent and improve oral health.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare predisposing factors, clinical characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of Fusarium keratitis according to the result of the initial potassium hydroxide (KOH) smear. Methods: This is a retrospective study of cases with Fusarium keratitis between January 2000 and December 2019 at two tertiary hospitals in South Korea. Patients were divided into two groups depending on the KOH smear result (KOH-positive and KOH-negative group), and its clinical factors were analyzed. Results: Among 319 fungal keratitis, seventy-nine cases were identified with Fusarium keratitis. Forty-seven cases (59.5%) were negative in the initial KOH smear prior to their diagnosis. The most common predisposing factor for Fusarium keratitis was ocular trauma (55.7%). There were no significant differences in sex, occupation, ulcer size or shape, hypopyon, and initial visual acuity between the two groups. Differences were observed between the KOH-positive group and the KOH-negative group in terms of deep corneal infiltration (50.0% vs. 78.7%, p=0.008) and evisceration treatment (3.1% vs. 25.5%, p=0.008). The delayed time to initiate antifungal eye drops was longer in the KOH-negative group (1.13 ± 0.49 vs. 3.93 ± 4.89, p=0.002). Only the KOH-negative group combined bacterial infection. The significant risk factors for poor clinical outcomes were the central corneal lesion (odds ratio (OR) 3.50, p=0.047), a large ulcer size (size ≥ 7.5 mm2) (OR 4.98, p=0.009), and endothelial plaque (OR 7.00, p=0.031). Conclusion: Initial KOH-negative patients often needed evisceration and had worse final visual outcomes. The delay of prompt initiation of antifungal treatment and combined bacterial infection result in a poor prognosis. This study highlights the initial KOH effect on early diagnosis and early treatment of Fusarium keratitis.

The objective of this study was to develop a non-fermented probiotic milk that maintains its physicochemical properties, microbial properties, antioxidant activity, and sensory properties during storage (0, 7, and 14 days). During storage, pH and viable cell counts decreased; however, titratable acidity increased. In addition, the composition and sensory characteristics of the non-fermented probiotic milk showed no significant differences between samples (MLN; milk with Lactobacillus plantarum Ln1, MGG; milk with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, and milk control). The antioxidant activities of MLN determined using 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging, ABTS+ radical scavenging, and reducing power assay were higher during the examined storage periods when compared with those of the other samples. Overall, the physicochemical properties, microbial properties, and sensory factors of MLN showed no significant differences. However, high antioxidant activity was observed. Thus, we present a new functional dairy product with antioxidant activity.

The objective of this study was to optimize industrial-grade media for improving the biomass production of Weissella cibaria JW15 (JW15) using a statistical approach. Eleven variables comprising three carbon sources (glucose, fructose, and sucrose), three nitrogen sources (protease peptone, yeast extract, and soy peptone), and five mineral sources (K2HPO4, potassium citrate, L-cysteine phosphate, MgSO4, and MnSO4) were screened by using the Plackett-Burman design. Consequently, glucose, sucrose, and soy peptone were used as significant variables in response surface methodology (RSM). The composition of the optimal medium (OM) was 22.35 g/l glucose, 15.57 g/l sucrose, and 10.05 g/l soy peptone, 2.0 g/l K2HPO4, 5.0 g/l sodium acetate, 0.1 g/l MgSO4·7H2O, 0.05 g/l MnSO4·H2O, and 1.0 g/l Tween 80. The OM significantly improved the biomass production of JW15 over an established commercial medium (MRS). After fermenting OM, the dry cell weight of JW15 was 4.89 g/l, which was comparable to the predicted value (4.77 g/l), and 1.67 times higher than that of the MRS medium (3.02 g/l). Correspondingly, JW15 showed a rapid and increased production of lactic and acetic acid in the OM. To perform a scale-up validation, batch fermentation was executed in a 5-l bioreactor at 37°C with or without a pH control at 6.0 ± 0.1. The biomass production of JW15 significantly improved (1.98 times higher) under the pH control, and the cost of OM was reduced by two-thirds compared to that in the MRS medium. In conclusion, OM may be utilized for mass producing JW15 for industrial use.

This study aims to determine the antibiofilm effect of cell-free supernatant (CFS) of Lactobacillus brevis strains against Streptococcus mutans strains. To study the antibiofilm mechanism against S. mutans strains, antibacterial effects, cell surface properties (auto-aggregation and cell surface hydrophobicity), exopolysaccharide (EPS) production, and morphological changes were examined. The antibiofilm effect of L. brevis KCCM 202399 CFS as morphological changes were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), compared with the control treatment. Among the L. brevis strains, L. brevis KCCM 202399 showed the highest antibiofilm effect on S. mutans KCTC 5458. The antibacterial effect of L. brevis KCCM 202399 against S. mutans KCTC 5458 was investigated using the deferred method (16.00 mm). The minimum inhibitory concentration of L. brevis KCCM 202399 against S. mutans KCTC 5458 was 25.00%. Compared with the control treatment, L. brevis KCCM 202399 CFS inhibited the bacterial adhesion of S. mutans KCTC 5458 by decreasing auto-aggregation, cell surface hydrophobicity, and EPS production (45.91%, 40.51%, and 67.44%, respectively). L. brevis KCCM 202399 CFS inhibited and eradicated the S. mutans KCTC 5458 biofilm. Therefore, these results suggest that L. brevis KCCM 202399 CFS may be used to develop oral health in the probiotic industry.

This study determined the inhibitory effect of Lactobacillus brevis KU15153 against cariogenic Streptococcus mutans KCTC 5316. Antimicrobial activity, auto-aggregation, cell surface hydrophobicity, exopolysaccharides (EPS) production, biofilm formation, and morphological changes were assessed in the presence of L. brevis KU15153. L. brevis KU15153 exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against S. mutans KCTC 5316 (28.67 ± 4.16 mm). Auto-aggregation (38.32%), cell surface hydrophobicity (27.08%), and EPS production rate (58.52%) of S. mutans KCTC 5316 slightly decreased upon treatment with L. brevis KU15153. Additionally, crystal violet stanning and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the L. brevis KU15153-mediated inhibition of biofilm formation by S. mutans KCTC 5316 in comparison to that observed in the negative control (untreated S. mutans KCTC 5316). These results indicate that the L. brevis KU15153 could be used as a potential probiotic for maintaining oral health.

In order to evaluate the sensory perceptions of users who visited a train station, this study aimed to conduct an evaluation of their spatial emotions and identify the distance and type of transfer. For evaluation and verification, emotional recognition and wayfinding types were analyzed according to types in the groups (gender, age, and spatial familiarity) of experimental participants. There were two research questions: "Will the length of movement patterns in the experiment environment vary depending on the types of the participant group?" and "Is there any moderating effect in the interaction between spatial familiarity and the types of the participant groups?" A total of 28 participants were recruited with consideration of gender, age, and familiarity with spatial experience, which were used to analyze the participant groups. The experiment was conducted at a train station, and a vignette was presented to the participants to record the route and pattern of their wayfinding, followed by providing a questionnaire to record their spatial perception. SPSS was used to conduct a T-test, factor analysis, and multidimensional scaling (MDS). The differences in spatial perception were arranged in visual positioning based on emotional vocabulary, and average movement distances in the participant groups were compared in accordance with the type of wayfinding and interaction effect by ANOVA. The results showed that there was a difference in spatial perception depending on the negative emotional vocabulary and type of participant. An emotional positioning map for average comparison was prepared for each participant group (gender, age, and spatial familiarity) by using the factors extracted in the factor analysis (emotional factor, management factor, and aesthetic factor). Female and unfamiliar groups displayed negative results in the emotional factor (F = 7.202, p < 0.05). In addition, male and familiar groups displayed negative results in the management factor (F = 3.058, p < 0.10). In wayfinding, there was an interaction between gender and the resident group based on the status of their spatial familiarity. Through this, it was possible to extract negative emotional evaluations according to the type of participant and the interaction factors for the type and length of the wayfinding.

Hemoptysis is a major reason for emergency department (ED) visits. Catamenial hemoptysis (CH), a rare condition of thoracic endometriosis, can cause recurrent hemoptysis but is difficult to diagnose in the ED due to the scarcity of cases and nonspecific clinical findings. We report a case of a 26-year-old woman who presented to the ED with recurrent hemoptysis since 2 years without a definite cause. Her vital signs and blood test findings were unremarkable. Chest computed tomography (CT) did not show any specific lesions other than a non-specific ground-glass opacity pattern in her right lung. She was on day 4 of her menstrual cycle and her hemoptysis frequently occurred during menstruation. Although there was no histological confirmation, based on her history of hemoptysis during menstruation and no other cause of the hemoptysis, the patient was tentatively diagnosed with CH and was administered gonadotropin-releasing hormone. She had no recurrence of hemoptysis for 3 months. While CH is difficult to diagnose in the ED, the patient's recurrent hemoptysis related to menstruation was a clue to the presence of CH. Therefore, physicians should determine the relationship between hemoptysis and menstruation for women of childbearing age presenting with repeated hemoptysis without a definite cause.

Splenic artery aneurysm is the third most common type of intra-abdominal aneurysm, with a prevalence rate of 0.01% to 10.4% in the general population. Splenic artery aneurysm is usually asymptomatic and is typically detected by chance and does not require surgical management; however, if rupture occurs, although rare, the patient's situation can become critical. We report our experience with a man who presented with left flank and left shoulder pain. His symptoms were caused by multiple hematomas confined to the spleen, but 2 days after admission, he developed delayed hemoperitoneum and required surgical management. We believe that his condition was due to delayed intraperitoneal bleeding called the double-rupture phenomenon; emergency physicians must consider this phenomenon when taking care of splenic artery aneurysm patients.

Congenital aniridia is a kind of eye disease characterized by complete or partial hypoplasia of the iris and is associated with other ocular anomalies including corneal opacity, glaucoma, and foveal hypoplasia. Heterozygous mutation of paired box 6 (PAX6) gene was identified in most cases of aniridia, with iatrogenic mutations accounting for about two-third of the cases and chromosomal rearrangements accounting for the other one-third. We report rare cases of variant aniridia, congenital iris ectropion associated with foveal hypoplasia in both a woman and her son with a mutation of PAX6 gene. To our knowledge, deletion c. 936delC in exon 8 of PAX6 gene has not been reported until now.

We studied the effect of Acanthopanax senticosus stem (ACPS) on mast cell-dependent anaphylaxis. ACPS inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylaxis at a dose of 1.0 g/kg by 50%. ACPS also inhibited passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction and histamine release from mast cells in a dose-dependent manner, respectively. Moreover, ACPS had an inhibitory effect on anti-dinitrophenyl IgE-induced tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production from mast cells. These results indicate that ACPS inhibits mast cell-mediated anaphylaxis in vivo and in vitro murine model.
