RESUMO

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising technology for recovering energy in wastewater through bacterial metabolism. However, it always suffers from low power density and electron transfer efficiency, restricting the application. This study fabricated the MnCo2S4-Co4S3/bamboo charcoal (MCS-CS/BC) through an easy one-step hydrothermal method, and the material was applied to carbon felt (CF) to form high-performance MFC anode. MCS-CS/BC-CF anode exhibited lower Rct (10.1 Ω) than BC-CF (17.24 Ω) and CF anode (116.1 Ω), exhibiting higher electrochemical activity. MCS-CS/BC-CF anode promoted the electron transfer rate and resulted in enhanced power density, which was 9.27 times higher (980 mW m-2) than the bare CF (105.7 mW m-2). MCS-CS/BC-CF anode showed the best biocompatibility which attracted distinctly larger biomass (146.27 mg/µL) than CF (20 mg/µL) and BC-CF anode (20.1 mg/µL). The typical exoelectrogens (Geobacter and etc.) took dramatically higher proportion on MCS-CS/BC-CF anode (59.78%) than CF (2.99%) and BC-CF anode (26.67%). In addition, MCS-CS/BC stimulated the synergistic effect between exoelectrogens and fermentative bacteria, greatly favouring the extracellular electron transfer rate between bacteria and the anode and the power output. This study presented an efficient way of high-performance anode electrocatalyst fabrication for stimulating MFC power generation, giving suggestions for high-efficient energy recovery from wastewater.

RESUMO

The S-H bond tunneling predissociation dynamics of thiophenol and its ortho-substituted derivatives (2-fluorothiophenol, 2-methoxythiophenol, and 2-chlorothiphenol) in S1 (ππ*) where the H atom tunneling is mediated by the nearby S2 (πσ*) state (which is repulsive along the S-H bond extension coordinate) have been investigated in a state-specific way using the picosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy for the jet-cooled molecules. The effects of the specific vibrational mode excitations and the SH/SD substitutions on the S-H(D) bond rupture tunneling dynamics have been interrogated, giving deep insights into the multidimensional aspects of the S1/S2 conical intersection, which also shapes the underlying adiabatic tunneling potential energy surfaces (PESs). The semiclassical tunneling rate calculations based on the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation or Zhu-Nakamura (ZN) theory have been carried out based on the ab initio PESs calculated in the (one, two, or three) reduced dimensions to be compared with the experiment. Though the quantitative experimental results could not be reproduced satisfactorily by the present calculations, the qualitative trends among different molecules in terms of the behavior of the tunneling rate versus the (adiabatic) barrier height or the number of PES dimensions could be rationalized. Most interestingly, the H/D kinetic isotope effect observed in the tunneling rate could be much better explained by the ZN theory compared to the WKB approximation, indicating that the nonadiabatic coupling matrix elements should be invoked for understanding the tunneling dynamics taking place in the proximity of the conical intersection.

RESUMO

Although membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technology for water desalination and industrial wastewater treatment, the MD process is not widely applied in the global water industry due to the lack of a suitable membrane for the MD process. The design and appropriate manufacture are the most important factors for MD membrane optimization. The well-designed porous structure, superhydrophobic surface, and pore-wetting prevention of the membrane are vital properties of the MD membrane. Nowadays, electrospinning that is capable of manufacturing membranes with superhydrophobic or omni phobic properties is considered a promising technology. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENMs) possess the characteristics of cylindrical morphology, re-entrant structure, and easy-shaping for a specific purpose, benefiting the membrane design and modification. Based on that, this review investigates the current state and future progress of the superhydrophobic, multi-layer, and omniphobic ENMs manufactured with various structural designs for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. We expect that this paper will provide some recommendations and guidance for further fabrication research and the configuration design of ENMs in the MD process for seawater desalination and wastewater purification.

RESUMO

The significance of long-term teleconnections derived from the anomalous climatic conditions of El Niño has been a highly debated topic, where the remote response of coastal hydrodynamics and marine ecosystems to El Niño conditions is not completely understood. The 14-year long data from a ship-borne acoustic Doppler current profiler was used to examine the El Niño's impact, in particular, 2009 and 2015 El Niño events, on oceanic and biological processes in coastal regions across the Korea/Tsushima Strait. Here, it was revealed that the summer volume transport could be decreased by 8.7% (from 2.46 ± 0.39 to 2.24 ± 0.26 Sv) due to the anomalous northerly winds in the developing year of El Niño. Furthermore, the fall mean volume backscattering strength could be decreased by 1.8% (from - 97.09 ± 2.14 to - 98.84 ± 2.10 dB) due to the decreased surface solar radiation after the El Niño events. Overall, 2009 and 2015 El Niño events remotely affected volume transport and zooplankton abundance across the Korea/Tsushima Strait through climatic teleconnections.

RESUMO

Sea fog is a natural phenomenon that reduces the visibility of manned vehicles and vessels that rely on the visual interpretation of traffic. Fog clearance, also known as fog dissipation, is a relatively under-researched area when compared with fog prediction. In this work, we first analyzed meteorological observations that relate to fog dissipation in Incheon port (one of the most important ports for the South Korean economy) and Haeundae beach (the most populated and famous resort beach near Busan port). Next, we modeled fog dissipation using two separate algorithms, classification and regression, and a model with nine machine learning and three deep learning techniques. In general, the applied methods demonstrated high prediction accuracy, with extra trees and recurrent neural nets performing best in the classification task and feed-forward neural nets in the regression task.

RESUMO

The S1-state decaying rates of the three different benzenediols, catechol, resorcinol, and hydroquinone, and their 1:1 water clusters have been state-specifically measured using the picosecond time-resolved parent ion transients obtained by the pump (excitation) and probe (ionization) scheme. The S1 lifetime of catechol is found to be short, giving τ ∼ 5.9 ps at the zero-point level. This is ascribed to the H-atom detachment from the free OH moiety of the molecule. Consistent with a previous report (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2013, 4, 3819-3823), the S1 lifetime gets lengthened with low-frequency vibrational mode excitations, giving τ ∼ 9.0 ps for the 116 cm-1 band. The S1 lifetimes at the additional vibronic modes of catechol are newly measured, showing the nonnegligible mode-dependent fluctuations of the tunneling rate. When catechol is complexed with water, the S1 lifetime is enormously increased to τ ∼ 1.80 ns at the zero-point level while it shows an unusual dip at the intermolecular stretching mode excitation (τ ∼ 1.03 ns at 146 cm-1). Otherwise, it is shortened monotonically with increasing the internal energy, giving τ ∼ 0.67 ns for the 856 cm-1 band. Two different asymmetric or symmetric conformers of resorcinol give the respective S1 lifetimes of 4.5 or 6.3 ns at their zero-point levels according to the estimation from our transients taken within the temporal window of 0-2.7 ns. When resorcinol is 1:1 complexed with H2O, the S1 decaying rate is slightly accelerated for both conformers. The S1 lifetimes of trans and cis forms of hydroquinone are measured to be more or less same, giving τ ∼ 2.8 ns at the zero-point level. When H2O is complexed with hydroquinone, the S1 decaying process is facilitated for both conformers, slightly more efficiently for the cis conformer.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the visual outcomes and patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of an extended range-of-vision intraocular lens (ERoV IOL) (Tecnis Symfony) vs 2 different mix-and-match approaches combining the ERoV IOL with bifocal IOLs. SETTING: Glory Seoul Eye Clinic, Seoul, South Korea. DESIGN: Prospective observational nonrandomized comparative study. METHODS: Patients undergoing cataract surgery were distributed into 3 groups based on their lifestyle and near visual demands: bilateral Symfony IOL, mix-and-match Symfony IOL with bifocal +3.25 diopters (D) IOL, and Symfony IOL with bifocal +4.0 D IOL. Binocular uncorrected visual acuity for distance, intermediate, and near, manifest refraction, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity, and subjective visual perception and satisfaction (photic phenomena, spectacle independence, and patient satisfaction) were evaluated at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The study comprised 103 people (206 eyes). There were no significant differences for uncorrected visual acuity between groups for distance, intermediate, and near vision (P > .05). Contrast sensitivity under low and high luminance conditions was not different between groups (P > .05). Influence of glare on image perception was found to reduce contrast sensitivity more in the bilateral group for smaller target sizes (P < .05). Patients implanted bilaterally with Symfony IOLs reported photic phenomena more frequently than those implanted with the mix-and-match combinations. CONCLUSIONS: All combinations evaluated provided good visual outcomes for distance, intermediate, and near. The lower incidence of photic phenomena reported by patients, and the lower reduction on contrast sensitivity for low illumination levels with the presence of glare, suggest that mix-and-match approaches might be a better option compared with bilateral implantation of ERoV IOLs.

RESUMO

Aging is associated with increased prevalence of skeletal and cardiac muscle disorders, such as sarcopenia and cardiac infarction. In this study, we constructed a compendium of purified ginsenoside compounds from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, which is a traditional Korean medicinal plant used to treat for muscle weakness. Skeletal muscle progenitor cell-based screening identified three compounds that enhance cell viability, of which 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh2 showed the most robust response. 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh2 increased viability in myoblasts and cardiomyocytes, but not fibroblasts or disease-related cells. The cellular mechanism was identified as downregulation of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1B (p27Kip1) via upregulation of Akt1/PKB phosphorylation at serine 473, with the orientation of the 20 carbon epimer being crucially important for biological activity. In zebrafish and mammalian models, 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh2 enhanced muscle cell proliferation and accelerated recovery from degeneration. Thus, we have identified 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh2 as a p27Kip1 inhibitor that may be developed as a natural therapeutic for muscle degeneration.

RESUMO

Commercial visibility sensors among meteorological sensors estimate the visibility distance based on transmission, backward scattering, and forward scattering principle. These optical visibility sensors yield comparatively accurate local visibility distance. However, it is still difficult to obtain comprehensive visibility information for a wide area, such as the coast or harbor due to the sensor structure using straightness and scattering properties of light. In this paper, we propose a novel visibility distance estimation method using dark channel prior (DCP) and distance map based on a camera image. The proposed method improves the local limit of optical visibility sensor and detects the visibility distance of a wide area more precisely. First, the dark channel for an input sea-fog image is calculated. The binary transmission image is obtained by applying a threshold to the estimated transmission from the dark channel. Then, the sum of the distance values of pixels, corresponding to the sea-fog boundary, is averaged, in order to derive the visibility distance. This paper also proposes a novel air-light and transmission estimation technique in order to extract the visibility distance for an abnormal sea-fog image, including any light source, such as sunlight, reflection light, and illumination light, etc. The estimated visibility distance was compared with optical visibility distance of an optical visibility sensor and their agreement was evaluated.

RESUMO

The structures of [(aniline)-(methanol)-(water)2]+ were investigated by infrared spectroscopy coupled with linear tandem mass spectrometry. We suggest the most stable structure of [(aniline)-(methanol)-(water)2]+ through infrared photodissociation spectra supported by the density functional theory calculations at the level of ωB97X-D/cc-pVQZ. Methanol and one water molecule formed hydrogen bonding with the amino group of aniline, while the other water formed hydrogen bonding with methanol. Upon infrared excitation of [(aniline)-(methanol)-(water)2]+, the water molecule connected to methanol turned out to be preferentially ejected, although the total internal energy in the cluster ion was large enough to dissociate other solvent molecules. This unique dissociation feature was attributed to the significant difference in the dissociation rates as obtained by the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory calculations as well as structural restriction.

RESUMO

Amyloid ß precursor protein binding family B member 1(APBB1) was first identified as a binding partner of amyloid precursor protein during brain development, but its function in the context of cancer remain unclear. Here we show for the first time that APBB1 is partly associated with intensifying cancer stem cell(CSC) and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and enhancing radiation-resistant properties of lung cancer cells. We found that APBB1 was highly expressed in ALDH1high CSC-like cells sorted from A549 lung cancer cells. In APBB1-deficient H460 cells with forced overexpression of APBB1, the protein directly interacted with IGF1Rß, enhanced phosphorylation of IGF1Rß/PI3K/AKT pathway(activation) and subsequently induced the phosphorylation of GSK3ß(inactivation). This phosphorylation stabilized Snail1, a negative regulator of E-cadherin expression, and regulated ß-catenin-mediated ALDH1 expression, which are representative markers for EMT and CSCs, respectively. In contrast, suppression of APBB1 expression with siRNA yielded the opposite effects in APBB1-rich A549 cells. We concluded that APBB1 partly regulates the expression of ALDH1. We also found that APBB1 regulates activation of nuclear factor-κB, which is involved in reducing various stresses including oxidative stress, which suggests that APBB1 is associated with γ-radiation sensitivity. Our findings imply that APBB1 plays an important role in the maintenance of EMT-associated CSC-like properties and γ-radiation resistance via activation of IGF1Rß/AKT/GSK3ß pathway in lung cancer cells, highlighting APBB1 as a potential target for therapeutic cancer treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcomes of patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) with lateral neck metastasis according to their permanent pathology report but negative frozen section findings who did not undergo lateral neck dissection. METHODS: Between September 2009 and December 2011, 575 patients at Gangnam Severance Hospital (Seoul, Korea) underwent frozen section analysis for a suspicious lateral neck lymph node. In 16 patients, the intraoperative findings were negative, but lateral neck metastasis was diagnosed on the basis of permanent pathology findings. The outcomes of these patients who underwent thyroidectomy but not lateral neck dissection were retrospectively investigated. RESULTS: One patient underwent a subsequent lateral neck dissection. After a mean (SD) follow-up period of 42.1 (8.5) months, none of the patients had distant metastasis. CONCLUSION: Total thyroidectomy with subsequent lateral neck dissection is not necessary in patients with PTC who are diagnosed with lateral neck metastasis according to their permanent pathology report but have negative intraoperative frozen section findings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Permanent hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy is a rare but potentially serious iatrogenic complication. The aim of this study was to investigate the rate of recovery from postoperative, permanent hypoparathyroidism in patients undergoing thyroidectomy without parathyroid autotransplantation. METHODS: This study was a prospective case series with a postoperative follow-up of up to 3 years. We enrolled patients with thyroid cancer who underwent total thyroidectomy with central compartment dissection, with or without lateral neck dissection, and who had postoperative permanent hypoparathyroidism, defined as serum levels of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) <15 pg/mL for at least 1 year. In the postoperative follow-up period, the serum levels of PTH and calcium were measured regularly. Recovery from permanent hypoparathyroidism was defined as return to normal serum levels of PTH (15-65 pg/mL) and calcium (8.5-10.1 mg/dL) without calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation. RESULTS: In the 1467 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy, 22 presented with permanent postoperative hypoparathyroidism. In 5 of these 22 patients, the PTH levels increased steadily and returned to normal in 27.6±2.9 months, after which supplementation of calcium and vitamin D could be discontinued. CONCLUSIONS: Although recovery from permanent hypoparathyroidism is rare, patients should be monitored for serum PTH levels so that unnecessary treatments such as calcium and vitamin D supplementation can be avoided.

RESUMO

Twenty-four metabolites, including seven new compounds (1-7), were isolated from the dried fruits of Psoralea corylifolia. On the basis of combined spectroscopic and chemical analysis, the new compounds were determined to be six flavonoids (1-6) and a meroterpenoid (7). The absolute configurations of the natural products obtained, including the previously undetermined 16 and 17, were assigned by several methods, such as NOE spectroscopy, optical rotation, and CD spectroscopy. Several of these compounds exhibited moderate inhibitory activity toward Staphylococcus mutans-derived SrtA (2, 6, and 16) and significant stimulation of SIRT1 activity (2, 3, and 15).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tumor multifocality is frequently observed in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), but its prognostic value is controversial. We investigated the prognostic significance of multifocality in PTCs larger than 1 cm and papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMC). METHODS: Medical records and pathologic results of 2,309 patients who received thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection for PTC were retrospectively reviewed. We identified 648 patients who had PTC with a primary tumor exceeding 1 cm, and 1,661 patients with PTMC. In each group, we compared patients with unifocal and multifocal disease. Cox regression analyses of disease persistence and recurrence were performed to identify the prognostic significance of multifocality. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 5.6 years. In the analyses of PTCs larger than 1 cm, the multifocal group included more extensive thyroid surgeries (p = 0.039), radioactive iodine therapies with higher doses (p < 0.001), and significantly higher rates of disease persistence and recurrence (p = 0.001) compared with the unifocal group. In analogous analyses of patients with PTMC, disease persistence and recurrence did not differ significantly between the unifocal and multifocal groups. Cox regression analyses indicated that multifocality was an independent risk factor for disease persistence and recurrence in patients who had PTC with a tumor exceeding 1 cm, but not in patients with PTMC. CONCLUSION: Tumor multifocality appears to be an important prognostic factor for PTCs larger than 1 cm, but may have little or no prognostic significance for PTMC.

RESUMO

During a search for SIRT1 activators originating in nature, three new dammarane triterpenes, 6α,20(S)-dihydroxydammar-3,12-dione-24-ene (1), 6α,20(S),24(S)-trihydroxydammar-3,12-dione-25-ene (2), and 6α,20(S),25-trihydroxydammar-3,12-dione-23-ene (3), as well as two known triterpenes, dammar-20(22),24-diene-3ß,6α,12ß-triol (4) and 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg3 (5), were isolated from Panax ginseng leaves. Compounds 1 and 3-5 showed potential as SIRT1 activators, as analyzed by in vitro enzyme-based SIRT1-NAD/NADH and SIRT1-p53 luciferase cell-based assays. They were also found to increase the level of NAD(+)/NADH ratio in HEK293 cells. This study presents a new class of chemical entities that may be able to be developed as SIRT1 activators for antiaging and treatment of age-associated diseases.

RESUMO

We have performed a shape optimization of the disc in an industrial double-eccentric butterfly valve using the effect analysis of design variables to enhance the valve performance. For the optimization, we select three performance quantities such as pressure drop, maximum stress, and mass (weight) as the responses and three dimensions regarding the disc shape as the design variables. Subsequently, we compose a layout of orthogonal array (L16) by performing numerical simulations on the flow and structure using a commercial package, ANSYS v13.0, and then make an effect analysis of the design variables on the responses using the design of experiments. Finally, we formulate a multiobjective function consisting of the three responses and then propose an optimal combination of the design variables to maximize the valve performance. Simulation results show that the disc thickness makes the most significant effect on the performance and the optimal design provides better performance than the initial design.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The cervical lymph nodes are the most common sites of locoregional recurrence in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Accurate tumor localization is important for the successful removal of impalpable recurrences in the cervical lymph nodes. We evaluated the benefits of ultrasound-guided localization (UGL) performed by a single surgeon on site. METHODS: Of 53 PTC patients who underwent reoperation for impalpable nodal recurrences, 32 (group 1) were assessed only using preoperative imaging, while 21 (group 2) were additionally evaluated by on-site UGL performed by the operating surgeon. Postoperative outcomes were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Operation times were significantly shorter (P < 0.001) and the mean size of the resected lymph nodes were smaller (P = 0.013) for group 2 patients. More lymph nodes were identified and resected in group 1 (3.56 vs. 3.19), but the rate of positive lymph nodes was significantly higher in group 2 (P < 0.001). There were no differences between the two groups in terms of resection success rate, complication rate, and postoperative hospital stay. During a mean follow-up period of 27.6 months, 52 patients (98.1%) showed no evidence of recurrence on routine ultrasound, and serum thyroglobulin concentrations remained < 1 ng/mL in 49 patients (92.5%). CONCLUSION: On-site UGL performed by the operating surgeon is useful for accurate resection of impalpable nodal recurrences in PTC patients.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the suitability of citrus-press cakes, by-products of the juice industry as a source for the whitening agents for cosmetic industry. Methods:Ethylacetate extracts of citrus-press cakes (CCE) were examined for their anti-melanogenic potentials in terms of the inhibition of melanin production and mechanisim of melanogenesis by using Western Blot analysis with tyrosinese, tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP-1), TRP2, and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) proteins. To apply the topical agents, citrus-press cakes was investigated the safety in human skin cell line. Finally flavonoid analysis of CCE was also determined by HPLC analysis. Results: Results indicated that CCE were shown to down-regulate melanin content in a dose-dependent pattern. The CCE inhibited tyrosinase, TRP-2, and MITF expressions in a dose-dependent manner. To test the applicability of CCE to human skin, we used MTT assay to assess the cytotoxic effects of CCE on human keratinocyte HaCaT cells. The CCE exhibited low cytotoxicity at 50 μg/mL. Characterization of the citrus-press cakes for flavonoid contents using HPLC showed varied quantity of rutin, narirutin, and hesperidin. Conclusions:Considering the anti-melanogenic activity and human safety, CCE is considered as a potential anti-melanogenic agent and may be effective for topical application for treating hyperpigmentation disorders.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We evaluated the usefulness of intracranial stent implantation for treating patients with atherosclerotic stenosis and with recurrent, ischemic, neurological symptoms despite having undergone medical therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between March 2004 and April 2010, we attempted intracranial, stent-assisted angioplasty in 77 patients with 85 lesions (anterior circulation 73 cases, posterior circulation 12 cases) and who had ischemic neurological symptoms with more than 50% major cerebral artery stenosis. We analyzed the results regarding the technical success rate, complication rate, and restenosis rate during the mean 29.4 month follow-up period. RESULTS: Intracranial stent implantation was successfully performed in 74 cases (87.1%). In nine cases among the 11, failed cases, stent implantation failure was due to the tortuosity of the target vessel. One patient experienced middle cerebral artery rupture during the procedure, and we embolized the vessel using a microcoil. Five patients developed cerebral infarction in three weeks after the procedure, three of whom improved using conservative management, although the other, two patients expired. The mean number of residual stenoses decreased from 72.3% to 14.7%. Three patients demonstrated significant in-stent restenosis, i.e. more than 50%, during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: As stent-assisted angioplasty in intracranial, atherosclerotic stenosis is effective and relatively safe, it can be considered as an alternative treatment for patients with recurrent, ischemic, neurologic symptoms despite having undergone medical therapy.
