RESUMO

Determining the genetic diversity and source rookeries of sea turtles collected from feeding grounds can facilitate effective conservation initiatives. To ascertain the genetic composition and source rookery, we examined a partial sequence of the mitochondrial control region (CR, 796 bp) of 40 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) collected from feeding grounds around the Korean Peninsula between 2014 and 2022. We conducted genetic and mixed-stock analyses (MSA) and identified 10 CR haplotypes previously reported in Japanese populations. In the haplotype network, six, three, and one haplotype(s) grouped with the Japan, Indo-Pacific, and Central South Pacific clades, respectively. The primary rookeries of the green turtles were two distantly remote sites, Ogasawara (OGA) and Central Ryukyu Island (CRI), approximately 1,300 km apart from each other. Comparing three parameters (season, maturity, and specific feeding ground), we noted that OGA was mainly associated with summer and the Jeju Sea, whereas CRI was with fall and the East (Japan) Sea ground. The maturity did not show a distinct pattern. Our results indicate that green turtles in the feeding grounds around the Korean Peninsula originate mainly from the Japan MU and have genetic origins in the Japan, Indo-Pacific, and Central South Pacific clades. Our results provide crucial insights into rookeries and MUs, which are the focus of conservation efforts of the Republic of Korea and potential parties to collaborate for green turtle conservation.

RESUMO

Verifying habitats, including the foraging and nesting areas for sea turtles, enables an understanding of their spatial ecology and successful planning of their conservation and management strategies. Recently, the observation frequency and bycatch of loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) turtles have increased in the northern limit of their distribution range, in the northern part of the East China Sea and East (Japan) Sea. We conducted satellite tracking to investigate the habitat use of seven loggerhead and eight green turtles from June 2016 to August 2022 in this area, where little is known about their spatial ecology. We applied a 50 percent volume contour method to determine their main foraging areas and analyzed 6 environmental variables to characterize their habitats. Loggerhead turtles mainly stayed in and used the East China Sea as a foraging area during the tracking period, while two individuals among them also used the East Sea as a seasonal foraging area. Most green turtles also used the East China Sea as a foraging area, near South Korea and Japan, with one individual among them using the lower area of the East Sea as a seasonal foraging area. Notably, one green turtle traveled to Hainan Island in the South China Sea, a historical nesting area. Our results showed that the two sea turtle species included the East Sea as a seasonal foraging area, possibly owing to the abundance of food sources available, despite its relatively lower sea temperature. Considering that loggerhead and green sea turtles were observed using the northern part of the East China Sea and East Sea more frequently than previously known and that the sea temperature gradually increases due to climate change, conservation and management activities are required for sea turtles in these areas.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Conventional diagnostic methods for dysphagia have limitations such as long wait times, radiation risks, and restricted evaluation. Therefore, voice-based diagnostic and monitoring technologies are required to overcome these limitations. Based on our hypothesis regarding the impact of weakened muscle strength and the presence of aspiration on vocal characteristics, this single-center, prospective study aimed to develop a machine-learning algorithm for predicting dysphagia status (normal, and aspiration) by analyzing postprandial voice limiting intake to 3 cc. METHODS: Conducted from September 2021 to February 2023 at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, this single center, prospective cohort study included 198 participants aged 40 or older, with 128 without suspected dysphagia and 70 with dysphagia-aspiration. Voice data from participants were collected and used to develop dysphagia prediction models using the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) with MobileNet V3. Male-only, female-only, and combined models were constructed using 10-fold cross-validation. Through the inference process, we established a model capable of probabilistically categorizing a new patient's voice as either normal or indicating the possibility of aspiration. RESULTS: The pre-trained models (mn40_as and mn30_as) exhibited superior performance compared to the non-pre-trained models (mn4.0 and mn3.0). Overall, the best-performing model, mn30_as, which is a pre-trained model, demonstrated an average AUC across 10 folds as follows: combined model 0.8361 (95% CI 0.7667-0.9056; max 0.9541), male model 0.8010 (95% CI 0.6589-0.9432; max 1.000), and female model 0.7572 (95% CI 0.6578-0.8567; max 0.9779). However, for the female model, a slightly higher result was observed with the mn4.0, which scored 0.7679 (95% CI 0.6426-0.8931; max 0.9722). Additionally, the other models (pre-trained; mn40_as, non-pre-trained; mn4.0 and mn3.0) also achieved performance above 0.7 in most cases, and the highest fold-level performance for most models was approximately around 0.9. The 'mn' in model names refers to MobileNet and the following number indicates the 'width_mult' parameter. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we used mel-spectrogram analysis and a MobileNetV3 model for predicting dysphagia aspiration. Our research highlights voice analysis potential in dysphagia screening, diagnosis, and monitoring, aiming for non-invasive safer, and more effective interventions. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was approved by the IRB (No. B-2109-707-303) and registered on clinicaltrials.gov (ID: NCT05149976).

RESUMO

The mitogenome of a soft coral, Eleutherobia rubra (Brundin, 1896), was completely sequenced for the first time. The total mitogenome length of E. rubra is 18,724 bp with 14 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, one transfer RNA gene (tRNA-Met), and one non-coding region (NCR). The gene order is also consistent with other Alcyoniidae species. The base composition is 30.1% A, 16.7% C, 19.5% G, and 33.7% T, with a G-C content of 36.2%. This is the first record of the complete mitogenome sequence of the genus Eleutherobia.

RESUMO

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from existing vessels, has been associated with more than 70 diseases. Although numerous studies have established angiogenesis models, only a few indicators can be used to analyze angiogenic structures. In the present study, we developed an image-processing pipeline based on deep learning to analyze and quantify angiogenesis. We utilized several image-processing algorithms to quantify angiogenesis, including a deep learning-based cell nuclear segmentation algorithm and image skeletonization. This method could quantify and measure changes in blood vessels in response to biochemical gradients using 16 indicators, including length, width, number, and nuclear distribution. Moreover, this procedure is highly efficient for the three-dimensional quantitative analysis of angiogenesis and can be applied to diverse angiogenesis investigations.

RESUMO

While there a number of measures to assess work-family conflict already exist, there are no well-validated measures exist for clinical use with Chinese parents. This study sought to validate a Chinese version of the work and family conflict scale (WAFCS), a brief 10-item scale developed for clinical and research use with parents. Relying on a sample of 447 Chinese parents in Hong Kong, this study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the WAFCS. Results showed that a two-factor model, similar to that of the original scale, fit the data well. The scale had concurrent and discriminant validity, while the scale's measurement invariance across gender and its internal consistency were also supported. Such robust psychometric properties suggest that the WAFCS is a promising tool that can be applied in a variety of research and clinical settings to examine work-family conflict experienced by Chinese parents.

RESUMO

A new marine ciliate was discovered from intertidal mudflat from South Korea. Based on the observation of living cells, protargol-impregnated specimens and SEM, we describe it as new species belonging to the genus Diophrys Dujardin, 1841, namely Diophrys pauciciliata n. sp. Its nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene also supports the taxonomic assignment. Diophrys pauciciliata n. sp. is one of the smallest species in the genus. Besides, the bipartite adoral zone and oligomerized dorsal bristles easily discriminate the new species from other congeners. Interestingly, D. pauciciliata n. sp. showed highly static states in all morphometrics (<8.5 % of coefficient of variation) and in particular, the number of frontal adoral membranelles and the counts of dorsal ciliature (e.g., number of dorsal kineties and numbers of dikinetids within each kinety) are invariable. Considering morphometric data of previous studies in the genus Diophrys, the narrow range of character states is unexpected because cell length is usually positively correlated with the numbers of adoral membranelles and dorsal dikinetids.

RESUMO

With most sea turtle populations declining, activities to conserve their habitat and nesting grounds and restore their populations are being implemented worldwide. To preserve the Northwestern Pacific populations, the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea has been releasing artificially propagated sea turtles, but whether these individuals join the wild population remains unknown. The present study aimed to determine the movement patterns of artificially propagated juvenile loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) turtles fitted with satellite transmitters on their carapaces and released in the waters of Jeju or Yeosu, Republic of Korea, between August 2018 and April 2022. Loggerheads traveled northward to the East Sea, whereas green turtles moved west or southwest. Two 36-month-old and two 48-month-old loggerheads moved toward their potential nursery grounds and toward their feeding grounds, respectively. Three green turtles with a curved carapace length (CCL) of <40 cm moved toward their nursery or feeding grounds, while three individuals (CCL > 45 cm) moved toward their inshore foraging areas. The travel paths were closely related to the direction of local sea currents. Our results implied that releasing artificially propagated sea turtles, considering their age and CCL, can positively contribute to the conservation of Northwestern Pacific populations.

RESUMO

Evidence suggests that parental involvement in children's education has a positive impact on children's educational achievements and wellbeing outcomes. The trend toward 24/7 economies has obliged many mothers to work non-standard schedules (i.e., schedules outside traditional daytime, Monday-Friday work schedules). This has raised concerns over how non-standard work schedules affect parenting behaviors, including paternal involvement in children's education. Using data from mothers of young children (age 5-6) in Hong Kong (N = 433), this study examined the association between maternal work schedules and involvement in children's home and school activities. The results of structural equation modeling found that weekend work was associated with lower levels of home-based involvement. By contrast, working non-standard hours was linked with higher levels of school-based involvement. This pattern suggested that non-standard work schedules could make it either easier or harder for mothers to balance work and family responsibilities, depending on the circumstances (i.e., whether they work non-standard hours or weekends). These findings, indicating that the effects of non-standard work schedules are not uniformly negative or positive, warrant sophisticated policy efforts to address the potential adverse effects of non-standard work schedules and avoid undermining their potential to be used as a family-friendly option.

RESUMO

Globally, sea turtles are at high risk of ingesting plastic. However, research on plastic ingestion by sea turtles in East Asia is scant, and no quantitative or qualitative investigation has been conducted in Korean waters. This study examined the plastic ingestion of sea turtles stranded, floating, or incidentally captured in Korean waters between 2012 and 2018. The quantity, shape, color, size, polymer type, and original usage of plastic debris (>1 mm) ingested by sea turtles were analyzed after being sorted from the gastrointestinal tracts of 34 turtles (21 loggerheads (Caretta caretta), 9 green turtles (Chelonia mydas), 2 leatherbacks (Dermochelys coriacea), and 2 olive ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea)). The ingestion frequencies of greens, loggerheads, olive ridleys, and leatherbacks were 100%, 81%, 50%, and 50%, respectively. The mean amount of plastic ingested was 108 ± 253 mg/kg (38 ± 61 n/ind.). The ingested debris tended to be films and fibers (>80%), light in color (white and transparent; 65%), and light polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene, polypropylene [poly (ethylene:propylene)], expanded polystyrene; 93%). The original uses were identified for 187 pieces; single-use plastics (e.g., plastic bag and packaging) and fishing and aquaculture items (e.g., twine and net) were found to dominate. Green turtles (264 ± 433 mg/kg) ingested significantly higher amounts of plastic than loggerheads (72.8 ± 156 mg/kg). Green turtles ingested mostly fibers (51%), such as rope, twine, and net, while loggerheads ingested largely films (61%), such as plastic bags and packaging. Interspecies differences in quantities and shapes of ingested debris may be related to their distinct feeding habits and geographical range of movement. The present study demonstrates that sea turtles foraging in Korean waters are considerably affected by marine plastic debris, and indicates that proper waste management of single-use plastics and fishing gears is urgently needed to mitigate the damage that plastic debris causes to marine wildlife.

RESUMO

With the emergence of 24/7 economies, the practice of working nonstandard schedules has become increasingly common. This trend raises a concern about how parental nonstandard work schedules affect child development outcomes. Using data from dual-earner families with young children (age 5-6) in Hong Kong, this study examined the association between parental work schedules and child development. It also examined under what conditions parental nonstandard work schedules affect child development, with a focus on the moderating role of family income. Results showed that paternal nonstandard work schedules were negatively associated with overall child development. This association was particularly salient among low-income families. By contrast, maternal nonstandard work schedules were not associated with child development outcomes. These findings suggest that it is important to equip parents, in particular low-income fathers, to address challenges resulting from their nonstandard work schedules.

RESUMO

The synthesis of ambiphilic N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, indol-2-ylidene (IdY, A), is described. A series of indolenium precursors (2 a-f) were prepared on a gram scale in good yields. Trapping experiments with elemental selenium, [RhCl(cod)]2 and CuCl provided the expected carbene adducts. Further computational and spectroscopic studies supported the ambiphilicity of IdY, which lies between cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAAC-5) and cyclic (amino)(aryl)carbene (CAArC). The copper complexes (6) show high percent buried volume (% Vbur = 58.1) and allow for carboboration of terminal alkynes within 30 minutes in a demonstration of synthetic utility with good yields and high regioselectivity.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of a newly developed epithelial removal brush with conventional methods in a rabbit model of corneal epithelial defects. The corneal epithelia of thirty-seven rabbits were removed by three different methods including blades (blade group), newly developed epithelial brushes (Ocu group), and conventional rotating brushes (Amo group). The defect area was measured with light microscopy immediately and at 4, 18, 24, and 50 hours after removal. Corneas were obtained immediately and at 24 and 50 hours and subjected to hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunofluorescence staining using proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and phosphorylated heat shock protein 27 (pHSP27) antibodies. The residual stromal surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the Ocu group, epithelia were significantly recovered at 18, 24, and 50 hours compared with immediately after removal, and in the blade and Amo groups, epithelia were significantly recovered only at 50 hours after epithelial removal. The expression levels of PCNA and pHSP27 did not differ among three groups. There was significantly more inflammatory cell infiltration in the blade group than in the other groups. SEM showed a more regular and uniform residual stromal surface in the Ocu group than in the other groups. The newly developed epithelial brush showed better polishing ability and led to earlier significant epithelial recovery and a more regular and uniform stromal surface than conventional methods in this rabbit model of epithelial defects. Accumulation of clinical data is expected to expand the scope of application of new brushes for laser surface ablation.

RESUMO

Although the majority of the species belonging to the genus Pseudocrangonyx Akatsuka & Komai, 1922 are found among the subterranean fauna of eastern Asia, the taxonomic knowledge is very poor and only four species have been recorded in Korea. In this study, the morphology of the stygobitic pseudocrangonyctid amphipods from Korean subterranean waters was examined and five new species were identified: Pseudocrangonyx concavus sp. nov. has a characteristic emarginated posteroventral margin of epimeral plate 3; Pseudocrangonyx gracilipes sp. nov. differs from other pseudocrangonyctids by the slender and elongated pereopods and more produced posterodistal corner of epimeral plate 3. Pseudocrangonyx crassus sp. nov. shows the expanded peduncular articles and a reduced flagellum of antenna 2. Pseudocrangonyx minutus sp. nov. is distinguished by more reduced pleopod articles compare to other pseudocrangonyctids. Pseudocrangonyx villosus sp. nov. has the more setose bases of pereopods 3 and 4. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are presented for these five new species.

RESUMO

We intended to describe 2 digenean trematodes found from a Chinese sea snake, Laticauda semifasciata, as the new fauna in the Republic of Korea. The snake was caught offshore of Aewol-eup, Jeju-do, in August 2017. Two species of fluke were found in the lung and intestinal tract of the snake in the process of necropsy. They were identified as Pulmovermis cyanovitellosus Coil and Kuntz, 1960 and Harmotrema laticaudae Yamaguti, 1933, respectively based on the morphological characters. Pulmovermis cyanovitellosus showed elongated body with well-developed and elongated male genital system and compact vitelline. And H. laticaudae was characterized by linguiform body with heavily armed cirrus with excretory system. This is the first time both species have been reported and described off the Korean coast. We provide morphological descriptions with some comments on their biology and geographical distribution. In addition, the taxonomic validity of the genus Hydrophitrema Sandars, 1960 was discussed, in terms of morphological descriptions and host ranges. This study provides novel insight into digenean fluke species existing off the coast of Korea.

RESUMO

A new species, Gammarus baengnyeongensis sp. nov., belonging to the family Gammaridae Leach, 1814 was collected from the Baengnyeongdo and Daecheongdo islands in South Korea. This new species is characterized by the flagellum of antenna 2 with calceoli, and the length ratio of outer ramus to inner ramus of uropod 3. Descriptions of diagnostic characteristics of the species are provided in the text. We performed statistical analysis to confirm the significance of morphological differences of interspecies. Additionally, we compare the new species to related species by the partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene. Genetic distances between the new species and closely related species rated from 29.1-40.8%, which highly supports Gammarus baengnyeongensis sp. nov. as a valid species. In this study, we add one new Gammarus species in Korean waters.

RESUMO

The development of mobile industries and urban transportation today requires nanotechnology for research and processing of metallic surfaces. Here, aluminum alloys (Al) are the most common material with the best physical properties that need to be treated. The advantages of Al in manufacturing are obvious; however, the Al surface is sensitive to the presence of acid or base, and thus protecting the Al surface is mandatory. In this study, Al surfaces have been subjected to a new surface treatment process that includes sandblasting, anodizing, and subsequent post-etching steps. The treated surfaces are evaluated by surface morphology including contact angle measurement and polymer adhesion strength. The adhesion strength of blasted Al-polymer assemblies with and without an anodizing step have been performed with a single lap shear test. This clearly shows the profound effect of the combined treatment process. The results reveal that a combination of high surface roughness and area as well as a thick Al2O3 layer with micro-cavities created by a post-etch step can significantly improve the adhesion strength of the Al-polymer. This, in turn, enhances the quality of and longevity of Al surface in production and application.

RESUMO

Rechargeable electrochemical cells with metallic anodes are of increasing scientific and technological interest. The complex composition, poorly defined morphology, heterogeneous chemistry, and unpredictable mechanics of interphases formed spontaneously on the anodes are often examined but rarely controlled. Here, we couple computational studies with experimental analysis of well-defined LiAl electrodes in realistic electrochemical environments to design anodes and interphases of known composition. We compare phase behavior, Li binding energies, and activation energy barriers for adatom transport and study their effects on the electrochemical reversibility of battery cells. As an illustration of potential practical benefits of our findings, we create cells in which LiAl anodes protected by Langmuir-Blodgett MoS2 interphases are paired with 4.1 mAh cm-2 LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathodes. These studies reveal that small- and larger-format (196 mAh, 294 Wh kg-1, and 513 Wh liter-1) cells based on protected LiAl anodes exhibit high reversibility and support stable Li migration during recharge of the cells.
