OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical characteristics and salivary biomarkers in each type of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-eight postmenopausal female patients with BMS were included. Fifty and 21 patients were assigned to the primary and secondary groups, respectively. Twenty-seven patients with both primary and secondary characteristics were assigned to the intermediate group. Comprehensive clinical characteristics and salivary biomarkers were analyzed. RESULTS: Significant differences in age, proportion of hyposalivator patients based on unstimulated whole saliva (UWS), symptom distribution, severties of burning sensation and effect of oral complaints in daily life (Eff-life), and positive symptom distress index (PSDI) were observed among the three groups. The primary group had significant higher UWS flow rate, fewer UWS hyposalivator proportions, and lesser severity of Eff-life than the secondary group. The intermediate group had significantly greater intensities of burning sensation and Eff-life and higher PSDI score than did the primary group. The primary group had significantly higher cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) levels in stimulated whole saliva than did the secondary group. CONCLUSIONS: This study's findings show that clinical characteristics differentiate each BMS type. Cortisol and DHEA levels are potential salivary biomarkers for discriminating between the primary and secondary types of BMS.

Zinc has been proposed as a topical therapeutic agent for the prevention and treatment of various oral diseases. The purpose of this scoping review was to investigate the effects of zinc on the enzymatic activities of lysozyme, peroxidase, and α-amylase from the perspective of developing oral health care products and therapeutic agents for oral diseases. A comprehensive review of the scientific literature was conducted on the direct interactions of zinc with lysozyme, peroxidase, and α-amylase from various sources. Most of the reports on the effects of zinc on the enzymatic activities of lysozyme, peroxidase, and α-amylase involved enzymes derived from bacteria, fungi, animals, and plants. Studies of human salivary enzymes were scarce. Zinc was found to inhibit the enzymatic activities of lysozyme, peroxidase, and α-amylase under diverse experimental conditions. The suggested mechanism was ionic interactions between zinc and enzyme molecules. The possibility that zinc causes structural changes to enzyme molecules has also been suggested. In conclusion, for zinc to be used as an effective topical therapeutic agent for oral health, further studies on the activity of human salivary enzymes are warranted, and additional information regarding the type and concentration of effective zinc compounds is also required.

BACKGROUND: In the case of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), the possibility of malignant transformation of the lesion necessitates a decision on the need for an additional biopsy at each visit. Among many clinical characteristics, change on the lesion surface is one of the important factors that determine the need for additional biopsy at each visit. The purpose of the study was to provide information on the characteristics of lesions related to malignant transformation during the follow-up period of OPMD. METHODS: Eight patients (four men and four women) with OPMD that transformed into malignancy during long-term follow-up were included and their mean age was 65.8 ± 12.4 years. Clinical information and histopathological diagnosis were investigated at the initial visit and during the long-term follow-up period. The focus was on information on changes on the lesion surface at the time the lesion was confirmed to be malignant. The period from initial diagnosis to dysplasia and from dysplasia to malignancy was also investigated. RESULTS: The OPMD diagnoses were oral lichen planus or oral lichenoid lesions (n = 2), oral leukoplakia (n = 5), and hyperplastic candidiasis (n = 1). During the follow-up period of the lesions, when dysplasia was obtained by additional biopsy, changes in the lesions consisted of an increase in the size of the white or red area. The lesion surface of the OPMD showed verrucous, papillary, exophytic, corrugated, and ulcerative changes at the time of malignancy diagnosis. The period for the initial lesion to become dysplasia, from dysplasia to malignancy, and from the initial lesion to malignancy was very variable. CONCLUSIONS: Attention should be paid to verrucous, papillary, exophytic, corrugated, and ulcerative changes on the lesion surface of OPMD. Considering that the period for OPMD to become malignant is highly variable, a longer follow-up of the lesion is necessary.

BACKGROUND: Quercus acuta Thunb. (Fagaceae) or Japanese evergreen oak is cultivated as an ornamental plant in South Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan and used in traditional medicine. The acorn or fruit of Quercus acuta Thunb. (QAF) is the main ingredient of acorn jelly, a traditional food in Korea. Its leaf was recently shown to have potent xanthine oxidase inhibitory and anti-hyperuricemic activities; however, there have been no studies on the biological activity of QAF extracts. Solar ultraviolet light triggers photoaging of the skin, which increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs), and destroys collagen fibers, consequently inducing wrinkle formation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of water extracts of QAF against UVB-induced skin photoaging and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms in human keratinocytes (HaCaT). METHODS: In this study, we used HPLC to identify the major active components of QAF water extracts. Anti-photoaging effects of QAF extracts were evaluated by analyzing ROS procollagen type I in UVB-irradiated HaCaT keratinocytes. Antiradical activity was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,20-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) assays. The expression of MMP-1 was tested by western blotting and ELISA kits. QAF effects on phosphorylation of the MAPK (p38, JNK, and ERK) pathway and transcription factor AP-1, which enhances the expression of MMPs, were analyzed by western blots. RESULTS: We identified two major active components in QAF water extracts, gallotannic acid and ellagic acid. The QAF aqueous extracts recovered UVB-induced cell toxicity and reduced oxidative stress by inhibiting intracellular ROS generation in HaCaT cells. QAF rescued UVB-induced collagen degradation by suppressing MMP-1 expression. The anti-photoaging activities of QAF were associated with the inhibition of UVB-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and activator protein 1 (AP-1). Our findings indicated that QAF prevents UVB-induced skin damage due to collagen degradation and MMP-1 activation via inactivation of the ERK/AP-1 signaling pathway. Overall, this study strongly suggests that QAF exerts anti-skin-aging effects and is a potential natural biomaterial that inhibits UVB-induced photoaging. CONCLUSION: These results show that QAF water extract effectively prevents skin photoaging by enhancing collagen deposition and inhibiting MMP-1 via the ERK/AP-1 signaling pathway.

The purpose of this study is to apply a machine learning approach to predict whether patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) respond to the initial approach and clonazepam therapy based on clinical data. Among the patients with the primary type of BMS who visited the clinic from 2006 to 2015, those treated with the initial approach of detailed explanation regarding home care instruction and use of oral topical lubricants, or who were prescribed clonazepam for a minimum of 1 month were included in this study. The clinical data and treatment outcomes were collected from medical records. Extreme Gradient-Boosted Decision Trees was used for machine learning algorithms to construct prediction models. Accuracy of the prediction models was evaluated and feature importance calculated. The accuracy of the prediction models for the initial approach and clonazepam therapy was 67.6% and 67.4%, respectively. Aggravating factors and psychological distress were important features in the prediction model for the initial approach, and intensity of symptoms before administration was the important feature in the prediction model for clonazepam therapy. In conclusion, the analysis of treatment outcomes in patients with BMS using a machine learning approach showed meaningful results of clinical applicability.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate clinical and demographic factors associated with oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with xerostomia. METHODS: Forty-one patients (55.2 ± 13.8 years) with xerostomia as a chief complaint participated in the study. Comprehensive information about clinical and demographic characteristics of the patients with xerostomia, xerostomia-related symptoms and behaviours, and xerostomia-associated complaints was investigated using a xerostomia questionnaire. Flow rates of unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva were measured. The Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) score was used to assess the OHRQoL of patients. The relationships between various factors and the OHIP-14 score were assessed by simple and multiple linear regression analyses. RESULTS: The OHIP-14 score of patients with xerostomia was high (44.3 ± 13.2). Characteristics of the patients with xerostomia associated with high OHIP-14 score were the intensity of xerostomia-related symptoms, frequency of xerostomia-related behaviours and the presence of speaking difficulty. Results from multiple linear regressions found that self-reported amount of saliva in usual, everyday life (ß = 0.622, p = 0.012) and the presence of a speaking difficulty (ß = 0.348, p = 0.014) had significant adversely affected the OHRQoL in patients with xerostomia. CONCLUSIONS: Subjective perceptions of the amount of saliva in the mouth and the experience of speaking difficulty affected the OHRQoL in patients with xerostomia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: How Wnt signaling is orchestrated in liver regeneration and tumorigenesis remains elusive. Recently, we identified transmembrane protein 9 (TMEM9) as a Wnt signaling amplifier. APPROACH AND RESULTS: TMEM9 facilitates v-ATPase assembly for vesicular acidification and lysosomal protein degradation. TMEM9 is highly expressed in regenerating liver and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. TMEM9 expression is enriched in the hepatocytes around the central vein and acutely induced by injury. In mice, Tmem9 knockout impairs hepatic regeneration with aberrantly increased adenomatosis polyposis coli (Apc) and reduced Wnt signaling. Mechanistically, TMEM9 down-regulates APC through lysosomal protein degradation through v-ATPase. In HCC, TMEM9 is overexpressed and necessary to maintain ß-catenin hyperactivation. TMEM9-up-regulated APC binds to and inhibits nuclear translocation of ß-catenin, independent of HCC-associated ß-catenin mutations. Pharmacological blockade of TMEM9-v-ATPase or lysosomal degradation suppresses Wnt/ß-catenin through APC stabilization and ß-catenin cytosolic retention. CONCLUSIONS: Our results reveal that TMEM9 hyperactivates Wnt signaling for liver regeneration and tumorigenesis through lysosomal degradation of APC.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and to identify clinical factors associated with OHRQoL. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with BMS (56.4 ± 10.7 years) participated in the study. Patients underwent oral examination, laboratory tests, psychological evaluation, measurement of salivary flow rates and evaluation of clinical characteristics using a BMS questionnaire. The OHRQoL of patients was assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). RESULTS: The OHIP-14 score for patients with BMS was 38.6 ± 12.8. Patients had higher scores for the psychological discomfort and physical pain dimensions of the OHIP-14. The intensity of taste disturbance or xerostomia symptoms (ß = 0.464, P < .001), worry about symptoms (ß = 0.307, P = .020), and results of psychological evaluation (ß = 0.311, P = .026) were significantly associated with OHIP-14 score. Multiple linear regression showed that the intensity of taste disturbance or xerostomia symptoms was significantly associated with decreased OHRQoL (ß = 0.637, P = .026). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that severity of taste disturbance or xerostomia is an important factor that influences OHRQoL in patients with BMS.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the treatment outcomes of medication therapies in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and to identify the clinical characteristics that may affect the efficacy of prescribed medications. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 769 patients with oral burning sensations. Of these patients, 420 patients diagnosed as the primary BMS received an "Initial Approach" that involved a detailed explanation about its etiopathophysiology, self-care instruction, and use of an oral lubricant. Neuropathic medications were prescribed for 277 patients who did not respond to the initial approach. Clinical characteristics, prescribed medications, and changes in intensity of oral symptoms were reviewed. RESULTS: Clonazepam was administered as the first-line medication. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), gabapentin, and nortriptyline were commonly administered in combination with clonazepam. More than two-thirds of the patients reported a marked improvement in oral symptoms after treatments with combination of neuropathic medications and ALA. The efficacies of the initial approach and clonazepam had significant positive associations with the initial intensity of oral symptoms and significant negative associations with depression. CONCLUSIONS: Clonazepam therapy in combination with appropriate medications was effective for managing patients with BMS. The initial intensity of oral symptoms and psychological status were significantly associated with treatment outcomes.

It has not been adequately studied which biomarkers for cardiovascular risk indicate changes of atherosclerosis by aging process. The current study aimed to investigate the characteristics of metabolic factors related to arterial stiffness in young and old adults. Our cross-sectional study enrolled 851 healthy young adults and 719 old adults. Metabolic biomarkers included glucose, lipid profiles, and liver enzymes. In young adults, additional biomarkers such as C-reactive protein, apolipoproteins, lipoprotein(a), ferritin, and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol were measured. Arterial stiffness was evaluated by measuring brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). The mean age was 37.8 and 65.1 years old in the young and old groups, respectively. Without adjustment, most parameters were significantly correlated with baPWV in both young and old groups. Mean baPWV was significantly different according to metabolic syndrome (MetS) in both groups (13.1 and 12.1 m/s in the young subjects with and without MetS, respectively; 17.4 and 15.8 m/s, respectively, in the old group). After adjusting for age, sex, and hemodynamic factors, the difference in baPWV according to MetS was significant only in the old group. The relationship between most biomarkers and baPWV was influenced by metabolic disorders such as hypertension and diabetes in old adults. Total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), and apolipoprotein B were significant in young group. In conclusion, the metabolic biomarkers related to arterial stiffness were different between young and old adults. Contrary to old adults, TC, LDLC, and apolipoprotein B were independent biomarkers for arterial stiffness in healthy young adults.

OBJECTIVES: While weight gain is known as a predictor of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) incidence, it remains controversial whether adipokine levels predict the development of NAFLD. We aimed to investigate the relationship of total adiponectin, high-molecular-weight (HMW) adiponectin, and leptin with the development and improvement of non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) independent of sex and weight change over a maximum of 8.5 years. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 2735 participants in a hospital health check-up setting. Adipokine levels were measured at baseline. NAFL was assessed with liver ultrasonography, and the development or improvement of NAFL was determined by repeated ultrasonography at follow-ups. RESULTS: Cross-sectional analyses revealed that total and HMW adiponectin levels were inversely associated with NAFL prevalence. In longitudinal analyses, the incidence of NAFL was 5.6 per 100-person-years during the observation period. The hazard ratios (HRs) per 1 µg/mL increase in the levels of total and HMW adiponectin were 0.900 (0.836-0.969) and 0.846 (0.754-0.948), respectively. Sex-stratified analyses showed that total and HMW adiponectin levels were significantly related to NAFL incidence only in women. In the subgroup of minimal weight change, only HMW adiponectin was a significant predictor for NAFL. Leptin predicted NAFL in the subgroup with weight gain. The improvement of NAFL was influenced by weight change, but not by adipokine levels. CONCLUSIONS: Low levels of total and HMW adiponectin may predict the development of NAFL independent of pathophysiological factors including obesity and insulin resistance. This predictability was evident in women. Leptin was a significant predictor for NAFL in the subjects with weight gain.

Although colonoscopy is commonly conducted for medical check-ups in Korea, investigations for the influence of bowel preparation on various health conditions are insufficient. This cross-sectional study investigated whether bowel preparation has an influence on serum levels of testosterone. A total of 1114 men were divided into the bowel preparation group and control groups. The median total and free testosterone levels were significantly lower in the bowel preparation group (14.89 and 0.26 nmol/L, respectively) than in the control groups (15.72 and 0.28 nmol/L, respectively). The level of total testosterone significantly increased with age in the bowel preparation group (r = 0.103). The differences in the levels of total and free testosterone between the 2 groups were more prominent in younger men than in older men. In multivariate regression models, bowel preparation was independently associated with the levels of total and free testosterone. In these models, the interaction between age and bowel preparation was significant for the levels of total and free testosterone. In conclusion, bowel preparation may independently decrease the serum levels of total and free testosterone. The decline in testosterone was more evident in younger men than in older men.

Rice blast disease, caused by the ascomycete fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the most important diseases in rice production. PAS (period circadian protein, aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator protein, single-minded protein) domains are known to be involved in signal transduction pathways, but their functional roles have not been well studied in fungi. In this study, targeted gene deletion was carried out to investigate the functional roles of the PAS-containing gene MoPAS1 (MGG_02665) in M. oryzae. The deletion mutant ΔMopas1 exhibited easily wettable mycelia, reduced conidiation, and defects in appressorium formation and disease development compared to the wild type and complemented transformant. Exogenous cAMP restored appressorium formation in ΔMopas1, but the shape of the restored appressorium was irregular, indicating that MoPAS1 is involved in sensing the hydrophobic surface. To examine the expression and localization of MoPAS1 in M. oryzae during appressorium development and plant infection, we constructed a MoPAS1:GFP fusion construct. MoPAS1:GFP was observed in conidia and germ tubes at 0 and 2 h post-infection (hpi) on hydrophobic cover slips. By 8 hpi, most of the GFP signal was observed in the appressoria. During invasive growth in host cells, MoPAS1:GFP was found to be fully expressed in not only the appressoria but also invasive hyphae, suggesting that MoPAS may contribute to disease development in host cells. These results expand our knowledge of the roles of PAS-containing regulatory genes in the plant-pathogenic fungus M. oryzae.

BACKGROUND: Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) has been used in Asia for its various biological effects, but no studies have investigated the safety of its long-term intake. Therefore, the present study evaluated the safety of KRG intake for 24 weeks. METHODS: We randomized 1,000 participants in a 1:1 ratio into two groups, which were treated daily with 2 g of KRG or a placebo for 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was all adverse events and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) that occurred after KRG or placebo administration, which were reported at week 4, 12, and 24 after the baseline visit. RESULTS: In total, 192 and 211 participants experienced adverse events in the KRG and placebo groups (39.2% and 42.0%, respectively; p = 0.361), and 59 and 57 KRG- and placebo-treated individuals reported ADRs (12.0% and 11.4%, respectively; p = 0.737). The frequently occurring ADRs were pruritus (2.0%), headache (1.6%), diarrhea (1.4%), and dizziness (1.2%) in the KRG group and pruritus (2.0%), headache (1.8%), dizziness (1.6%), rash (1.4%), and diarrhea (1.2%) in the placebo group. Discontinuation of drug administration due to ADRs was reported in 13 participants, six (1.2%) and seven (1.4%) in the KRG and placebo groups, respectively (p = 0.814). No significant abnormal changes were revealed by anthropometric, laboratory, and vital sign measurements in the KRG group compared with those in the placebo group. CONCLUSION: The present study confirms the safety and tolerability of daily intake of 2 g of KRG for 24 weeks by healthy adults.

Copper, an essential micronutrient, is required for lipid metabolism, mitochondrial function, iron metabolism, and antioxidant defense. Copper deficiency has been linked to alterations in lipid metabolism and various metabolic processes of the liver, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, most of these studies relied on copper measurements in the blood or tissues. In this study, we investigated the association between hair copper concentration and NAFLD in Korean adults, independent of metabolic syndrome status. Clinical and laboratory parameters, including factors of metabolic syndrome, were analyzed in 751 Korean adults divided into quintiles, according to hair copper concentration. Lower hair copper concentration was significantly correlated with higher body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, and lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Subjects with NAFLD showed significantly lower hair copper concentrations, and the risk of NAFLD was significantly higher for the lower hair copper quintile groups even after adjusting for metabolic syndrome-related factors. Overall, this study suggests that lower hair copper concentration could be associated with NAFLD, independent of metabolic syndrome factors.

Introduction: A nonspecific symptom, fatigue accompanies a variety of diseases, including cancer, and can have a grave impact on patients' quality of life. As for multidimensional instruments, one of the most widely used is the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI). This study aims to verify the reliability and validity of the MFI Korean (MFI-K) version. Materials and Method: This study was performed at four university hospitals in the Republic of Korea. Among outpatients visiting the Department of Family Medicine, those complaining of fatigue or visiting a chronic care clinic were enrolled in this study. A total of 595 participants were included, and the mean age was 42.2 years. Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the MFI-K was 0.88. The MFI-K had good convergent validity. Most subscales of the MFI-K were significantly correlated with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). In particular, general and physical fatigue had the greatest correlation with the VAS and FSS. Although the English version of MFI had five subscales, the factor analysis led to four subscales in the Korean version. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the clinical usefulness of MFI-K instrument, particularly in assessing the degree of fatigue and performing a multidimensional assessment of fatigue.

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic pain condition characterised by a persistent burning sensation in clinically normal oral mucosa. BMS most commonly occurs in middleaged and elderly women. Various local and systemic factors can cause oral burning symptoms. When all possible local and systemic factors are excluded, burning mouth symptoms can be diagnosed as BMS. Psychophysical tests and histopathological data suggest the involvement of peripheral and central neuropathic mechanisms in BMS etiopathogenesis. Psychological problems are frequently observed in BMS patients. Several mechanisms, including increased parafunctional habits, steroid dysregulation, central disinhibition due to taste dysfunction, and low dopamine levels in the brain, have been proposed as an explanation for the role of psychological factors in BMS pathophysiology. However, the causal relationship between BMS and psychological problems remains controversial. Given the neuropathic nature of BMS, treatment for it is similar to other neuropathic pain conditions. Although various treatment modalities, including pharmacological intervention, behavioural therapy and psychotherapy, have been proposed, there is no definitive treatment always effective for the majority of BMS patients. In conclusion, for better understanding of the relationship between BMS and psychological factors, well-designed prospective studies are needed. In addition, the evaluation and treatment of psychological problems are essential for successful management of BMS patients.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of the molecular weight of hyaluronic acid on its viscosity and enzymatic activities of lysozyme and peroxidase in solution and on the hydroxyapatite surface. DESIGN: Hyaluronic acids of four different molecular weights (10 kDa, 100 kDa, 1 MDa, and 2 MDa), hen egg-white lysozyme, bovine lactoperoxidase, and human whole saliva were used. Viscosity values of hyaluronic acids were measured using a cone-and-plate viscometer at six different concentrations (0.1-5.0 mg/mL). Enzymatic activities of lysozyme and peroxidase were examined by hydrolysis of fluorescein-labeled Micrococcus lysodeikticus and oxidation of fluorogenic 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein to fluorescing 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein, respectively. RESULTS: In solution assays, only 2 MDa-hyaluronic acid significantly inhibited lysozyme activities in saliva. In surface assays, hyaluronic acids inhibited lysozyme and peroxidase activities; the inhibitory activities were more apparent with high-molecular-weight ones in saliva than in purified enzymes. The 100 kDa-hyaluronic acid at 5.0 mg/mL, 1 MDa-one at 0.5 mg/mL, and 2 MDa-one at 0.2 mg/mL showed viscosity values similar to those of human whole saliva at a shear rate range required for normal oral functions. The differences among the influences of the three conditions on the enzymatic activities were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acids at low concentration and low-molecular-weight ones at high concentration showed viscosity values similar to those of human whole saliva. Inhibitory effects of hyaluronic acids on lysozyme and peroxidase activities were more significant with high-molecular-weight ones on the surface and in saliva compared with in solution and on purified enzymes.

The association between sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and arterial stiffness in women is not conclusive. In addition, obesity might also be involved in the relationship between SHBG and atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between SHBG and arterial stiffness in association with central obesity in women. This cross-sectional study included 381 women who participated in the health checkup programs in one hospital. The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) was measured as a marker for arterial stiffness. A negative correlation was observed between SHBG levels and baPWV (rho = -0.281). The relationship was significant even after adjusting for potential confounders (beta = -0.087 in fully adjusted model). After considering the interaction between central obesity and SHBG levels, the significant association was evident only in obese women (P for interaction = 0.025). Adjustment for a 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk scores, instead of each cardiovascular risk factor individually, did not affect the significance of the relationship between SHBG levels and baPWV. Serum levels of SHBG were negatively associated with arterial stiffness independent of cardiovascular risk factors or 10-year ASCVD risk scores in Korean women. The relationship may be potentiated by central obesity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the hypothesis that the association between vitamin D deficiency and depressive symptoms is dependent upon total cholesterol level in a representative national sample of the South Korean population. DESIGN: This was a population-based cross-sectional study. SETTING: The Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V, 2010-2012). SUBJECTS: We included 7198 adults aged 20-88 years. RESULTS: The incidence of depressive symptoms in individuals with vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D<20 ng/ml) was 1·54-fold (95 % CI 1·20, 1·98) greater than in individuals without vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D ≥20 ng/ml). The relationship was stronger in individuals with normal-to-borderline serum total cholesterol (serum total cholesterol<240 mg/dl; OR=1·60; 95 % CI 1·23, 2·08) and non-significant in individuals with high serum total cholesterol (OR=0·97; 95 % CI 0·52, 1·81) after adjustment for confounding variables (age, sex, BMI, alcohol consumption, smoking status, regular exercise, income level, education level, marital status, changes in body weight, perceived body shape, season of examination date and cholesterol profiles). CONCLUSIONS: The association between vitamin D deficiency and depressive symptoms was weakened by high serum total cholesterol status. These findings suggest that both vitamin D and total cholesterol are important targets for the prevention and treatment of depression.
