BACKGROUND: Post-operative pain is a common form of acute pain. Objective pain assessment in post-anesthesia care units after surgery is useful regardless of the patient's condition. AIMS: This study aimed to develop and evaluate an acute pain assessment tool for patients in post-anesthesia care units. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional observational study comprising two stages: scale development and psychometric evaluation. SETTINGS:  . PARTICIPANTS/SUBJECTS:  . METHODS: Scale items were developed based on a literature review and content validity by experts. The validity and interrater reliability of the pain scale were evaluated using data from 218 patients admitted to the post-anesthesia care unit at a university hospital. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to identify the sensitivity and specificity for determining the cutoff point for acute pain. RESULTS: We developed an objective acute pain scale, called the APA5, which ranges from 0-10 and comprises behavioral (facial and verbal expressions and body movement) and physiological (changes in heart rate and blood pressure) responses. The APA5 is valid and reliable for assessing acute pain in the recovery room. Sensitivity and specificity were acceptable when the cutoff was 2 out of 10 points. CONCLUSIONS: The APA5 is an easy and simple tool for measuring pain in patients in post-anesthesia care units who have difficulties with self-reporting.

(1) Background: To improve existing rehabilitation technologies, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the effect size of home-based rehabilitation using robotic, virtual reality, and game devices on physical function for stroke survivors. (2) Methods: Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, and CINAHL were used to search the randomized controlled trials that applied technologies via home-based rehabilitation, such as virtual reality, robot-assisted devices, and games. The effect size (Hedges's g) of technology type and affected limb on physical function were calculated. (3) Results: Ten studies were included. The effect size of home-based rehabilitation in virtual reality had the greatest value (Hedges's g, 0.850; 95% CI, 0.314-1.385), followed by robot-assisted devices (Hedges's g, 0.120; 95% CI, 0.003-0.017) and games (Hedges's g, -0.162; 95% CI, -0.036 to -0.534). The effect size was larger in the upper limbs (Hedges's g, 0.287; 95% CI, 0.128-0.447) than in the lower limbs (Hedges's g, -0.113; 95% CI, -0.547 to 0.321). (4) Conclusions: Virtual reality home rehabilitation was highly effective for physical function compared to other rehabilitation technologies. Interventions that consisted of a pre-structured and tailored program applied to the upper limbs were effective for physical function and psychological outcomes.

RESUMO

Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry (MMSE) is a nondestructive tool for nanostructure analysis, and recently the enhanced computational power, combining neural networks and simulation data, enhance its analysis ability on more complex geometries. This study introduces a deep learning method to realize fast and accurate analysis; predicting nanostructure parameters by pairing Mueller matrices with relatively limited library data and then applying neural network algorithm. Thus, it was realized to predict the width and height of 1D grating structure with an accuracy of MAE below 0.1 nm through the proposed two-step prediction algorithm. Finally, experimental validation on SiO2 grating of 38 nm width and 100 nm height showed a good agreement in the dimensions with reasonable range compared to those measured by scanning electron microscopy.

The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between the three components in Au/CeO2-Mg(OH)2 can be controlled by the relative composition of CeO2 and Mg(OH)2 and by the calcination temperature for the direct oxidative esterification of methacrolein (MACR) with methanol to methyl methacrylate (MMA). The composition ratio of CeO2 and Mg(OH)2 in the catalyst affects the catalytic performance dramatically. An Au/CeO2 catalyst without Mg(OH)2 esterified MACR to a hemiacetal species without MMA production, which confirmed that Mg(OH)2 is a prerequisite for successful oxidative esterification. When Au/Mg(OH)2 was used without CeO2, the direct oxidative esterification of MACR was successful and produced MMA, the desired product. However, the MMA selectivity was much lower (72.5%) than that with Au/CeO2-Mg(OH)2 catalysts, which have an MMA selectivity of 93.9-99.8%, depending on the relative composition of CeO2 and Mg(OH)2. In addition, depending on the calcination temperature, the crystallinity of the CeO2-Mg(OH)2 and the surface acidity/basicity can be remarkably changed. Consequently, the Au-nanoparticle-supported catalysts exhibited different MACR conversions and MMA selectivities. The catalytic behavior can be explained by the different metal-support interactions between the three components depending on the composition ratio of CeO2 and Mg(OH)2 and the calcination temperature. These differences were evidenced by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption. The present study provides new insights into the design of SMSI-induced supported metal catalysts for the development of multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts.

Au nanoparticles bound to crystalline CeO2 nanograins that were dispersed on the nanoplate-like Mg(OH)2, denoted as Au/CeO2-Mg(OH)2, were developed as the highly active and selective multifunctional heterogeneous catalyst for direct oxidative esterification of aldehydes with alcohols to produce alkyl esters under base-free aerobic conditions using oxygen or air as the green oxidants. Au/CeO2-Mg(OH)2 converted 93.3% of methacrylaldehyde (MACR) to methyl methacrylate (MMA, monomer of poly(methyl methacrylate)) with 98.2% selectivity within 1 h, and was repeatedly used over eight recycle runs without regeneration. The catalyst was extensively applied to other aldehydes and alcohols to produce desirable alkyl esters. Comprehensive characterization analyses revealed that the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) among the three catalytic components (Au, CeO2, and Mg(OH)2), and the proximity and strong contact between Au/CeO2 and the Mg(OH)2 surface were prominent factors that accelerated the reaction toward a desirable oxidative esterification pathway. During the reaction, MACR was adsorbed on the surface of CeO2-Mg(OH)2, upon which methanol was simultaneously activated for esterifying the adsorbed MACR. Hemiacetal-form intermediate species were subsequently produced and oxidized to MMA on the surface of the electron-rich Au nanoparticles bound to partially reduced CeO2-x with electron-donating properties. The present study provides new insights into the design of SMSI-induced supported-metal-nanoparticles for the development of novel, multifunctional, and heterogeneous catalysts.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Construct and discriminant validity of the ICD-11 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD) has been examined worldwide. However, little is known about CPTSD in Korean population who are suffering with long-term responses of organized violence in their context. DESIGN: This study conducted a cross-sectional survey to assess the construct and discriminant validity of the ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD using the Korean International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) among organized violence survivors of past political oppression (from 1940s to 2010s) in South Korea. METHOD: A total of 236 survivors and families completed the survey including the ITQ. A confirmatory factor analysis and a multinomial logistic regression were conducted. RESULTS: A second-order eight-factor, the ICD-11 CPTSD model, best described the structure of CPTSD. Compared to the non-diagnosed group, having above median score of cumulative trauma was a risk factor for PTSD [Odds ratio (OR) = 3.18] and CPTSD (OR = 3.27). Having above median score of cumulative social stressors increased the risk of CPTSD, relative to PTSD (OR = 4.84), and to the non-diagnosed group (OR = 7.79). CONCLUSIONS: The ITQ seemed applicable to the Korean culture, showing a valid construct and meaningfully distinguishing ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD.
