RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of bone scan procedures for the diagnosis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis. METHODS: From February 2009 to June 2009, 22 patients (4 males and 18 females) from Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Republic of Korea, were diagnosed with TMJ disorder. They were examined by clinical examination, plain radiograph and bone scan and were categorized into three groups: normal, internal derangement and osteoarthritis. TMJ uptake ratios and asymmetrical indices were calculated. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in uptake ratios associated with pain and bone change. However, significant results were obtained when comparing uptake ratios between the osteoarthritis and non-osteoarthritis groups. CONCLUSION: It was concluded from this study that bone scans may help to diagnose osteoarthritis when increased uptake ratios are observed.

In the present study, we investigated age-related changes in pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) immunoreactivity and its protein levels in the gerbil hippocampus at various ages using immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis. In the post-natal month 1 (PM 1) group, PACAP-immunoreactive cells were found in all hippocampal subregions. The number of PACAP-immunoreactive cells was decreased in the PM 3 group and was still more decreased in the PM 6 and 12 groups. Thereafter, in the PM 18 and 24 groups, PACAP-immunoreactive cells were significantly increased again. However, in the mossy fibre zone, PACAP immunostaining was very strong in the adult group, especially in the PM 6 group. In addition, PACAP protein level was highest at PM 6, showing a slight decrease at PM 24. These results indicate that PACAP-immunoreactive cells are lowest in the adult stage and highest in the aged stage. However, PACAP immunoreactivity in the mossy fibre zone and PACAP protein level in the hippocampus are highest in the adult stage.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy and effectiveness of digital panoramic radiographs for pre-operative assessment of dental implants. METHODS: We selected 86 patients (221 implants) and calculated the length of the planned implant based on the distance between a selection of critical anatomical structures and the alveolar crest using the scaling tools provided in the digital panoramic system. We analysed the magnification rate and the difference between the actual inserted implant length and planned implant length according to the location of the implant placement and the clarity of anatomical structures seen in the panoramic radiographs. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the planned implant length and actual inserted implant length (P > 0.05). The magnification rate of the width and length of the inserted implants, seen in the digital panoramic radiographs, was 127.28 ± 13.47% and 128.22 ± 4.17%, respectively. The magnification rate of the implant width was largest in the mandibular anterior part and there was a significant difference in the magnification rate of the length of implants between the maxilla and the mandible (P < 0.05). When the clarity of anatomical structures seen in the panoramic radiographs is low, the magnification rate of the width of the inserted implants is significantly higher (P < 0.05), but there is no significant difference between the planned implant length and actual inserted implant length according to the clarity of anatomical structures (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Digital panoramic radiography can be considered a simple, readily available and considerably accurate pre-operative assessment tool in the vertical dimension for dental implant therapy.

BACKGROUND: Novel approaches are being explored to develop new therapies for various allergic diseases. Complementary and alternative medicines are considered to be promising avenues for the development of such new therapies. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of many Korean plants on the IgE-mediated allergic response in mast cells and in vivo, and its mechanism of action. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anti-allergic activity was tested by evaluating effects on degranulation of mast cells in culture and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in vivo. Its mechanism of action was investigated by immunoblotting analysis, immunoprecipitation, RT-PCR, and other molecular biological approaches in mast cells. RESULTS: We screened approximately 100 natural plant extracts collected in Korea for in vitro anti-allergic activity. The leaf extract of Camellia japonica (LECJ) exhibited the most potent effect on degranulation in antigen-stimulated rodent and human mast cells. LECJ reversibly inhibited degranulation in a dose-dependent manner, with IC(50) values of approximately 50 microg/mL for the mast cells, and it also suppressed the expression and secretion of TNF-alpha and IL-4 in rat basophilic leukaemia-2H3 mast cells. In agreement with its in vitro activity, LECJ significantly inhibited mast cell-mediated PCA in an animal model. LECJ inhibited activating phosphorylation of tyrosine Y371 on Syk kinase, indicating that LECJ inhibits the activity of Src-family kinases in mast cells. In the in vitro kinase assay, LECJ directly inhibited Lyn kinase, the major Src-family kinase in the cells. It also suppressed Akt and MAP kinases, which are critical for the production of various pro-inflammatory cytokines in mast cells. In high-performance liquid chromatography analysis, quercetin-3-beta-D-glucoside and eugenol were identified as the major active components. CONCLUSION: The present results strongly suggest that the anti-allergic activity of LECJ is mediated through inhibiting degranulation and allergic cytokine secretion by inhibition of Src-family kinase in mast cells and it may be useful for the treatment of mast cell-related immediate and delayed allergic diseases.

This article describes a pooled analysis of 41 Korean patients with metastatic oral tumours. The data reviewed are from Korean dental and medical case reports published between 1983 and 2004. The mean age was 55.2 years, and the male-to-female ratio was 1.9:1. There were more metastases in the jawbone than in oral soft tissues. The lung was the most common primary site for jawbone metastases, whereas the liver was for those of oral soft tissues. In contrast to reports in Western literature of the breast being the most common primary site, the liver was the most common primary site, followed by the lung and thyroid. These differences may be caused by a relatively high incidence rate of hepatocellular carcinoma in Korea.

AIMS: Identification of bacterium HYK0203-SK02 and its lysis of Stephanodiscus hantzschii. METHODS AND RESULTS: In an effort to identify a bio-agent capable of controlling S. hantzschii blooms, we used the algal lawn method to identify 76 bacteria in relevant water samples. Of these, the seven isolate showed algicidal activity against S. hantzschii; isolate HYK0203-SK02 exhibited the strongest algicidal activity, and was used for further analysis. 16S rDNA sequencing of this isolate allowed us to identify HYK0203-SK02 as a strain of Pseudomonas putida (99.2%). Growth of S. hantzschii was strongly suppressed by bacteria in all growth phases, with the strongest algicidal activity noted against diatoms in the exponential stage (5-18 days). Host range assays revealed that isolate HYK0203-SK02 also strongly inhibited the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa, but stimulated growth of the diatom Cyclotella sp., which has a similar structure to that of S. hantzschii. Biochemical assays revealed that the algicidal substance seemed to be localized in the cytoplasmic membrane of this newly identified algicidal bacterium. CONCLUSION: The algicidal bacteria P. putida HYK0203-SK02 caused cell lysis and death of not only diatom S. hantzschii but also cyanobacteria M. aeruginosa, dramatically. Algicidal substance might be located at the compartment of cytoplasmic membrane. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Taken together, our results indicate that P. putida HYK0203-SK02 may be a potential bio-agent for future use in controlling freshwater diatomic blooms.

RESUMO

MOTIVATION: Natural language processing (NLP) methods are regarded as being useful to raise the potential of text mining from biological literature. The lack of an extensively annotated corpus of this literature, however, causes a major bottleneck for applying NLP techniques. GENIA corpus is being developed to provide reference materials to let NLP techniques work for bio-textmining. RESULTS: GENIA corpus version 3.0 consisting of 2000 MEDLINE abstracts has been released with more than 400,000 words and almost 100,000 annotations for biological terms.

The thermo-sensitive polymer, PNIPAM-grafted ethylcellulose, was synthesized and it was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy that PNIPAM was successfully grafted onto ethylcellulose. Microparticles were prepared by the spray-drying method using a B-191 Mini Spray Dryer. Their morphology, observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showed irregular spheres with rugged surfaces, and narrow size distribution. In a model delivery system, ethylcelullose-g-PNIPAM was used as the polymer wall material and allopurinol was used as the model drug. The release rate of allopurinol from ECGPN8 microparticles was slower at 40 degrees C (above the LCST) than that of 25 degrees C (below the LCST), probably due to the collapse of PNIPAM chains by temperature. Although PNIPAM was the large part of wall material, the thermo-sensitive release behavior was not so obvious. It is believed that the release of allopurinol from the microparticles is more dependent on the porous structure of microparticles than the conformational change of PNIPAM, created by the rapid evaporation of solvent during the spray-drying process.

In this Note, we investigated the turbidity ratio method for the evaluation of water-in-oil emulsion stability. The slope of turbidity ratio of water-in-oil emulsions with time was taken as an index of stability; the higher the slope, the less stable the system. Various factors affecting the stability of emulsion such as HLB of emulsifier, amount of emulsifiers, and water were tested using this technique. The results of the turbidity ratio technique for the evaluation of emulsion stability were well consistent with those obtained by the measurement of phase separation when incubated for 30 days at room temperature. A simple and convenient method to measure microelectrophoretic mobilities was proposed to determine the zeta potential of nanobubbles generated by ultrasonication. Bubbles in pure water solutions and in aqueous solutions of alkyl polyglycoside (AG) with different alkyl chain lengths and degrees of polymerization in the head group were sonicated with a palladium-coated electrode designed specially by the manufacturer. The zeta potentials of bubbles with ordinary cationic and ionic surfactants are consistent with others' previous results. The average size of the bubbles generated by sonication is in the range of 300 to 500 nm. The zeta potentials of bubbles in both pure water and AG solutions at all pH values are negative. As the chain length of AG increases, zeta potentials significantly decrease at high pH. For nonionic AG, a possible charging mechanism based on known mechanisms is suggested to explain the negative charge, known to be unusual. Even with a very high concentration of H(+) ions in solution the bubbles are charged negatively because the interface is covered with slightly acidic alcohol groups of AGs. At high pH, the less polar the surfactant, the more negative the charge, since nonpolar surfactant molecules induce the adsorption of OH(-) ions, rather than H(+) ions that prefer hydration by water molecules.
