RESUMO

AIM: This study was carried out to adapt a measurement tool that can be used to measure the perceived satisfaction level of parents of pediatric patients hospitalized in a pediatric clinic with care from pediatric nurses and to examine its psychometric properties. DESIGN AND METHOD: The study was conducted methodologically with 301 parents of children who were hospitalized in the pediatric clinic of a university hospital between September and December 2023. Explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed on the data to establish the validity of the scale, Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient, split-half, item-total score methods were utilized to test its reliability. RESULTS: The scale consisted of 26 items and a single dimension. It was determined that the total explained variance ratio was 79.246%. According to the confirmatory factor analysis results, goodness of fit values were determined as RMSEA = 0.077, CFI = 0.96, IFI = 0.97, RFI = 0.92, NFI = 0.93, and TLI = 0.96. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated as α = 0.989 for the total scale. CONCLUSION: The Parents' Perception of Satisfaction with Care from Pediatric Nurse Practitioners Instrument is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used to measure the perceived satisfaction level of parents of pediatric patients hospitalized in a pediatric clinic with nursing care. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The scale can contribute to determining the perceived satisfaction levels of parents of pediatric patients hospitalized in the pediatric clinic with nursing care and, if there is a problem, to providing regular in-service training for pediatric nurses who are responsible for pediatric patient safety and quality of care.

RESUMO

The purposes of this study were to explore parents' perceptions of satisfaction with care from primary care pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) and to explore the relationships of the four components of parental satisfaction with parents' intent to adhere to recommended health care regimen. The study used a descriptive correlational research design. A convenience sample of 91 participants was recruited from practices in southeastern Pennsylvania. The 28-item, Parents' Perceptions of Satisfaction with Care from Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PPSC-PNP) tool was developed to measure four components of satisfaction and overall satisfaction of parents with PNP care after the health visit. A 100 mm visual analog (VAS) scale measured parental intent to adhere to the care regimen recommended by the PNP. Parents' perceptions of overall satisfaction with care from PNPs and satisfaction with each of the four components (communication, clinical competence, caring behavior, and decisional control) were high as measured by the PPSC-PNP. Multiple regression analysis revealed that clinical competence had the strongest positive relationship with parental intent to adhere to PNP recommended health regimen and was the only variable to enter the regression equation. The findings of this study have implications for nursing practice. The PPSC-PNP instrument may be used with a variety of pediatric populations and settings as a benchmark for quality care. Clinical competence is important for the role of the PNP. Other variables of parental intent to adhere to the health regimen should be explored in future studies.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this methodological study was to establish the psychometric properties of the newly developed Parents' Perceptions of Satisfaction with Care from Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PPSC-PNP) instrument to measure parents' satisfaction with PNP care. METHOD: The initial 37-item PPSC-PNP was sent to five expert judges for review. The 28 retained items yielded a content validity index of .81. The PPSC-PNP instrument was completed by two convenience samples of 25 and 91 parents of children younger than 18 years who were recruited from clinical practice settings in Southeastern Pennsylvania. RESULTS: Items on the PPSC-PNP were evaluated for content validity by Cronbach's α internal consistency reliability coefficients and item-to-total correlations. The final 28-item PPSC-PNP had a Cronbach's α of .98. The scores on the PPSC-PNP indicated that the parents were satisfied with PNP care. DISCUSSION: Although several instruments designed to measure patients' satisfaction with nurse practitioner care are reported in the nursing literature, none were found to measure parents' perception of pediatric nurse practitioner care. The newly developed PPSC-PNP is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used as a quality indicator of PNP care.
