RESUMO

Ferromagnetically interacting Ising spins on the pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra form a highly degenerate manifold of low-energy states. A spin flip relative to this "spin-ice" manifold can fractionalize into two oppositely charged magnetic monopoles with effective Coulomb interactions. To understand this process, we have probed the low-temperature magnetic response of spin ice to time-varying magnetic fields through stroboscopic neutron scattering and SQUID magnetometry on a new class of ultrapure Ho2Ti2O7 crystals. Covering almost 10 decades of time scales with atomic-scale spatial resolution, the experiments resolve apparent discrepancies between prior measurements on more disordered crystals and reveal a thermal crossover between distinct relaxation processes. Magnetic relaxation at low temperatures is associated with monopole motion through the spin-ice vacuum, while at elevated temperatures, relaxation occurs through reorientation of increasingly spin-like monopolar bound states. Spin fractionalization is thus directly manifest in the relaxation dynamics of spin ice.

RESUMO

We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study of low energy magnetic excitations in the breathing pyrochlore helimagnetic Cu2OSeO3. Fully documenting the four lowest energy magnetic modes that leave the ferrimagnetic configuration of the "strong tetrahedra" intact ( | ℏ ω | < 13 meV), we find gapless quadratic dispersion at the point for energies above 0.2 meV, two doublets separated by 1.6(2) meV at the R point, and a bounded continuum at the X point. Our constrained rigid spin cluster model relates these features to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and the incommensurate helical ground state. Combining conventional spin wave theory with a spin cluster form factor accurately reproduces the measured equal time structure factor through multiple Brillouin zones. An effective spin Hamiltonian describing complex anisotropic intercluster interactions is obtained.

RESUMO

We present a magnetic phase diagram of rare-earth pyrochlore Yb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} in a ⟨111⟩ magnetic field. Using heat capacity, magnetization, and neutron scattering data, we show an unusual field dependence of a first-order phase boundary, wherein a small applied field increases the ordering temperature. The zero-field ground state has ferromagnetic domains, while the spins polarize along ⟨111⟩ above 0.65 T. A classical Monte Carlo analysis of published Hamiltonians does account for the critical field in the low T limit. However, this analysis fails to account for the large bulge in the reentrant phase diagram, suggesting that either long-range interactions or quantum fluctuations govern low field properties.

RESUMO

Skyrmion crystals are regular arrangements of magnetic whirls that exist in a wide range of chiral magnets. Because of their topology, they cannot be created or destroyed by smooth rearrangements of the direction of the local magnetization. Using magnetic force microscopy, we tracked the destruction of the skyrmion lattice on the surface of a bulk crystal of Fe(1-x)Co(x)Si (x = 0.5). Our study revealed that skyrmions vanish by a coalescence, forming elongated structures. Numerical simulations showed that changes of topology are controlled by singular magnetic point defects. They can be viewed as quantized magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles, which provide sources and sinks of one flux quantum of emergent magnetic flux, respectively.

RESUMO

Magnetic Fe2Pt core-shell nanoparticles with 2 nm cores were synthesized with a monolayer coating of silicotungstate Keggin clusters. The core-shell composition is substantiated by structural analysis performed using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) in a liquid suspension. The molecular metal oxide cluster shell introduces an enhanced dispersibility of the magnetic Fe-Pt core-shell nanoparticles in aqueous media and thereby opens up new routes to nanoparticle bio-functionalization, for example, using pre-functionalized polyoxometalates.

RESUMO

We have explored the technological potential of combining neutron resonance spin echo (NRSE) with the time-of-flight method in quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments. For these test measurements at the new NRSE instrument RESEDA (FRM II, Munich), we have employed CASCADE, one of the fastest neutron detectors in the world, developed at the University of Heidelberg. Conventionally, scintillation detectors are used, in order to detect neutron intensities with high time resolution. In contrast, we used the new CASCADE detector converting neutrons in thin (10)B layers being capable of resolving neutron intensity modulations up to the megahertz regime. This fast detector allows us to abandon the last resonance flip coil of a standard NRSE setup. The classical spin echo signal is replaced by a time-modulated signal. In this setup, fast intensity modulations are present at the detector position. In order to demonstrate, that NRSE-CASCADE operates well up to detector frequencies of 10 MHz, we performed elastic polarization test measurements on a standard sample. The CASCADE detector is a multidetector accumulating counts in 128 × 128 pixels on a surface of 200 mm × 200 mm. We have analyzed the signal in 600 pixels, providing information about the spin phase reaching the detector and about the resolution function of this new variant tested at RESEDA.
