Aim: Globally, one of the leading causes of preventable blindness is primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). The study assessed the clinical presentations of POAG patients attending an eye center in Abuja, Nigeria. Materials and methods: Records of 188 eyes, collected from 94 patients diagnosed with POAG for a period of 1 year at the eye center, were reviewed. Clinical records, including age, gender, visual acuity (VA), central cornea thickness (CCT), intraocular pressure (IOP), cup-to-disk ratios, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness of the participants, were extracted and analyzed. Results: The majority of the participants were males (56.4%) and adults (57.4%), most of whom had normal VA (>70% in each eye). Our analysis revealed normal average estimates of RNFL thickness, IOP, and CCT among the participants. Females had thicker RNFL compared to males (p = 0.02). Although CCT decreased with age (r = -0.28, p = 0.005), there was no such link between IOP and CCT (r = 0.09, p = 0.38). Conclusion: Central cornea thickness (CCT), RNFL thickness, and IOP in isolation should not be used as early indicators for POAG; rather, a combination of these and other indices is recommended. Background and Aim: To report the scope of optometry practice in Trinidad and Tobago to identify areas that need improvement. Methods: A cross-sectional study of optometrists in Trinidad and Tobago was conducted using a validated self-structured questionnaire. Data obtained was exported to the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Descriptive analysis and Pearson χ 2 were used to summarize the demographic data and determine associations, respectively. Result: A total of 63 optometrists participated in the study. Majority of them were females (69.8%, n = 44), Christians (65.1%), East Indians (47.6%), and 30 years and below (66.7%). Most (87%) of them utilized routine optometric equipment in their clinical practice including autorefractors, retinoscopes, direct ophthalmoscopes, lensometers, phoropters, slit lamp biomicroscopes, trial lens boxes, and visual acuity chart projectors. A few of them have noncontact tonometer (4.8%), Volk lenses (1.6%), and perform color vision tests (1.6%). Fewer (12.7%, n = 8) practitioners provided low-vision services. The use of pharmaceutical agents was prevalent among the participants (55.6%). Additionally, the provision of contact lenses was the most frequently practiced service among the participants (85.7%, n = 54). A significant association was observed between the provision of low-vision services and sex (p = 0.03). Conclusion: The scope of optometry practice in Trinidad and Tobago is in accordance with the basic guidelines set out by the World Council of Optometry but there is need to get more involved in the provision of low vision and other specialty services.

Amidst high burden of infectious diseases, undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are predicted to become the leading cause of death in Ghana by 2030. NCDs are driven, to a large extent, by unhealthy food environments. Concerned, the Ghana Ministry of Health (MOH) has since 2012 sought to garner the support of all to address this challenge. We aimed to support the MOH to address the challenge through public health policy measures, but would soon be reminded that longstanding challenges to policy development such as data poverty, and policy inertia needed to be addressed. To do this, the we generated the needed evidence, curated the evidence, and availed the evidence to Ghanaian policymakers, researchers and civil society actors. Thus, we addressed the problem of data poverty using context-relevant research, and policy inertia through advocacy and scholar activism. In this paper, we share how a public interest coalition used context-relevant research, evidence-informed advocacy and scholar activism to valorise and increase demand for healthy food policy (including food-related health taxes) in Ghana.

This cross-sectional study investigated the health-related and vision-related quality of life measures of adults with low vision compared to healthy individuals in Trinidad and Tobago. The health-related quality of life (HRQOL-14) and the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) were administered to 20 participants with low vision caused by diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, as well as 20 participants with no visual problems (control). Participants were recruited from the University Eye Clinic in Trinidad and Tobago. Compared to the controls, more participants in the low-vision group had lower age-adjusted NEI-VFQ-25 scores (48.3% vs. 95.1%; p < 0.001), had poor general (47.5% vs. 10%, p = 0.004) and mental (100% vs. 10%, p < 0.042) health, experienced greater activity limitation due to impairment or health problems (85% vs. 20%, p < 0.001), needed help with personal care (27.5% vs. 0%, p < 0.009) and daily routine (67.5% vs. 0%, p < 0.001), and experienced sleep problems (97.5% vs. 65%, p < 0.001) and symptoms of anxiety (100% vs. 90%, p = 0.042). All the diabetic retinopathy participants (100%, p = 0.028) had two or more impairments or vision problems compared to none in the other low-vision participants. In summary, the HRQOL-14 and NEI-VFQ-25 scores were significantly reduced in low-vision participants, who also demonstrated a greater vulnerability to poor quality of life in the presence of diabetes retinopathy. These findings have important clinical implications regarding offering appropriate support and interventions to improve quality of life outcomes in individuals with low vision.

To assess ocular parameters and their association with anthropometric measurements in Indo-Trinidadians adults. This was a clinical, descriptive, cross-sectional study of ocular parameters and anthropometry in adults Trinidadians of South Asian descent (Indo-Trinidadian). Ocular parameters were measured using optical coherence tomography, intraocular lens master biometer, and an autorefractor. Weight, height, and body mass index (BMI) were measured by anthropometry. Univariable and multivariable linear regressions were used to determine the association between demographic variables, anthropometric and ocular parameters. A total of 149 participants (298 eyes) comprising of 90 females (60.6%) and 59 males (39.4%). Aged 18 to 67 participated in the study. Males were taller, heavier, and had longer axial lengths than females which were statistically significant (P < .05). Age was negatively correlated with central corneal thickness (CCT) (r = -0.353, P = .044) and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (r = -0.348, P = .047) but positively correlated with lens thickness (R = 0.881, P < .001). Education level was positively associated with CCT (R = 0.408, P = .018) but negatively associated with lens thickness (r = -0.521, P = .002). Weight was negatively correlated with corneal topography (r = -0.427, P = .013). Height was negatively correlated with cup-to-disc ratio (r = -0.410, P = .018), CCT (r = -0.382, P = .028), and corneal topography (r = -0.453, P = .008). There was no correlation between BMI, ocular parameters and CCT. There was a significant difference in the ocular parameters between males and females of South Asian descent in Trinidad and Tobago. Weight was negatively associated with the corneal topography. Height was negatively associated with the cup-to-disc ratio, central corneal thickness, and corneal topography. BMI had no statistically significant association with the ocular parameters investigated.

To reduce the transmission risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy prions (PrPBSE), specified risk materials (SRM) that can harbour PrPBSE are prevented from entering the feed and food chains. As composting is one approach to disposing of SRM, we investigated the inactivation of PrPBSE in lab-scale composters over 28 days and in bin composters over 106-120 days. Lab-scale composting was conducted using 45 kg of feedlot manure with and without chicken feathers. Based on protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA), after 28 days of composting, PrPBSE seeding activity was reduced by 3-4 log10 with feathers and 3 log10 without. Bin composters were constructed using ~ 2200 kg feedlot manure and repeated in 2017 and 2018. PMCA results showed that seeding activity of PrPBSE was reduced by 1-2 log10 in the centre, but only by 1 log10 in the bottom of bin composters. Subsequent assessment by transgenic (Tgbov XV) mouse bioassay confirmed a similar reduction in PrPBSE infectivity. Enrichment for proteolytic microorganisms through the addition of feathers to compost could enhance PrPBSE degradation. In addition to temperature, other factors including varying concentrations of PrPBSE and the nature of proteolytic microbial populations may be responsible for differential degradation of PrPBSE during composting.

PURPOSE: Contact lenses (CL) remain a popular mode of refractive error correction globally and in the Caribbean, mostly among young people. However, no data on the characteristics of the CL population wearers in the Caribbean is available. This study reported on the characteristics of CL wearers and the associated factors in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed the clinical records of 243 CL wearers who attended the University of the West Indies (UWI) optometry clinic between 2017 and 2018. Data on their demographic profiles, CL wearing characteristics including lens type, material, purpose of wear, replacement schedule and lens care systems were extracted and analyzed. The associations between the demographic characteristics and CL wearing characteristics were also determined. RESULTS: About half of the CL wearers used them for fashion (more among those aged 18 to 30 years, 61.0%), therapeutic (more among those <18 years, 43.8%, P = 0.001) and refractive error correction purposes (more in those >40 years, P = 0.001). Females were more likely to use CLs for fashion compared with males (67.0% versus 40.7%). Age (P<0.0005) and gender (P = 0.030) were associated with the lens materials. Those aged 18-30 years were more likely use hydrogels compared with the younger ones (64.1% versus 25.0%). Rigid gas permeable (RGP) CL use was more common in males than females (21.8% versus 10.9%, P = 0.031). Daily disposables were predominantly used by younger respondents (18-30 years old, 31.3%, P < 0.001) and more in females than males (66.7% vs 49.4%, P = 0.040). CONCLUSION: The study found that the CL appears to be more commonly worn for fashion in younger females and for refractive error correction in older males. Age, gender, and employment status were the main determinants of lens wear among respondents attending the university clinic in T&T.

Pillared clays have shown to effectively catalyze the photo-Fenton process without the necessity of acidic conditions, which is a very attractive feature from the perspective of environmentally friendly processes, especially when high natural abundance of chemical elements are incorporated. In this work, the catalytic activity of Al/Cu interlayered pillared clays for the degradation and mineralization of paracetamol through a photo-Fenton-like process was investigated. Al/Cu-pillared clays were prepared by adding ane Al/Cu pillaring solution to a bentonite suspension. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the enlargement of the interlayer space of the clay provoked by the pillaring process and Al and Cu species in the prepared samples were verified by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The specific surface area of pure bentonite was 2-fold increased after the Al/Cu pillaring process. A synthetic paracetamol solution with an initial concentration of 100 ppm was prepared for the assessment of the activity of the prepared materials. Different catalyst concentrations were tested (0.2, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 g L-1) and the complete removal of paracetamol was achieved in all cases, but the highest mineralization rate (69.8 mg total organic carbon (TOC) gcat -1 h-1) corresponds to the catalyst loading of 0.5 g L-1. An ultraviolet-C (UVC) light source was employed, and no adjustment of the pH to acidic conditions was needed to achieve these results. Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) was employed to identify the reaction intermediates of paracetamol degradation. A proposed pathway for the oxidation of paracetamol molecule is presented. The effect of Cu content in the pillared clay and the stability and reusability of the catalyst were also assessed. The kinetic constants of paracetamol removal were 0.2318 and 0.0698 min-1, under photo-Fenton and UV + H2O2 processes, respectively.

The recent surge in the sale of cannabidiol (CBD)-based topicals has risen rapidly in recent years, as it can be used to treat a multitude of skin disorders. However, there is minimal regulation concerning actual CBD content in these products. Topicals on the market may contain various concentrations of CBD and may be combined with a range of other compounds. The concentration of CBD has to be determined before the products enter the market. For this reason, a selective analytical method was developed using a 23 factorial design; and validated to determine CBD content in various topicals based on ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) followed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The method showed good precision (relative standard deviation ≤ 7.7%), accuracy at three concentration levels (recovery > 97.9%) for three different matrices, acceptable linearity (R2 > 0.99), and limit of detection (0.05 µg/mg). The method was successfully applied to the analysis of five commercial topicals. The proposed method is rapid, sensitive, precise, and accurate. In addition, it does not require derivatization and it is suitable for the determination of CBD in topicals for quality control purposes.

Biomonitoring is a very useful tool to evaluate human exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), like bisphenols (BPs), which are widely used in the manufacture of plastics. The development of reliable analytical methods is key in the field of public health surveillance to obtain biomonitoring data to determine what BPs are reaching people's bodies. This review discusses recent methods for the quantitative measurement of bisphenols and their derivatives in biological samples like urine, blood, breast milk, saliva, and hair, among others. We also discuss the different procedures commonly used for sample treatment, which includes extraction and clean-up, and instrumental techniques currently used to determine these compounds. Sample preparation techniques continue to play an important role in the analysis of complex matrices, for liquid matrices the most commonly employed is solid-phase extraction, although microextraction techniques are gaining importance in this field, and for solid samples ultrasound-assisted extraction. The main instrumental techniques used are liquid and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Finally, we present data on the main parameters obtained in the validation of the revised methods. This review focuses on various methods developed and applied for trace analysis of bisphenols, their conjugates, halogenated derivatives, and diglycidyl ethers in biological samples to enable the required selectivity and sensitivity. For this purpose, a review is carried out of the most recent relevant publications from 2016 up to present.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence and clinical presentation of participants with glaucoma attending a public eye care facility in Nigeria. METHOD: Hospital based retrospective study of glaucoma participants aged 50 years and above seen over a 5-year period. Descriptive statistics summarized the demographic, clinical characteristics and treatment of the participants and determined the association of variables with gender and age. Prevalence of the glaucoma by type, and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were also calculated. RESULT: Of the 5482 case files that were reviewed, 995 (18.15%, 95% Cl 17.15-19.19%) had glaucoma particularly primary open angle glaucoma (11.55%, 95%CI 10.73-12.42%) and were mostly females (564, 56.7%) aged 69 ± 12 years (range, 50-103 years). In contrast to other glaucoma types, the prevalence of primary angle closure glaucoma (3.68, 95%CI 3.22-4.22) increased by 15% over 5 years. The mean intraocular pressure ranged from 15-50 mmHg but higher in females than males (27.8 ± 6.1mmHg versus 26.6 ± 6.0 mmHg, P <0.05) who had comparable VA (0.58 ± 0.4 Log MAR) and cup-disc ratios (P >0.05). On presentation, the glaucoma hemi field test (GHFT) was outside the normal limits in 45.5% and 54.5% of males and females, respectively. The type of visual field defect was associated with glaucoma type (P = 0.047). Arcuate scotoma was most common (35.5%) across glaucoma types, paracentral scotoma more common in Secondary glaucoma while Seidel scotoma was highest in NTG (19.3%). Beta-blocker was the mainstay of management (42.2%) but more likely to be prescribed to males while more females received carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of glaucoma in older people remains a public health problem in Nigeria. The fact that about half of the participants presented with visual field defect suggests there is a need for public health messages to emphasize on early glaucoma screening, detection and management.

In this work, we carried out a cross-sectional study to assess occupational ocular injuries and utilization of eye protective devices among sawmill workers in the Ojo local government area of Lagos State, Nigeria A structured questionnaire was used to conduct face-to-face interviews among the sawmill workers. Pearson's chi-squared test and t-test were used to test associations between variables. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. A total of 215 sawmill workers with a mean age of 37.08 ± 12.07 years participated in the study. A majority (55.8%) of the participants were male (93.7%), and a majority were 21-40 years old (55.8%). Of the participants, 78.6% were aware of occupational ocular injuries and 17.7% used ocular safety devices. The major barrier to the use of eye protective devices was unavailability (43%). Workers who were ≥20 years old (p < 0.001), who received a monthly salary of less than USD 100 (p < 0.043), who had work experience of ≥10 years (p < 0.04), who were aware of ocular hazards (p < 0.03), and who did not use protective eye devices (p < 0.02) were significantly associated with occupational ocular injuries compared to others. The prevalence of occupational ocular injuries and the utilization of eye safety devices among the sawmill workers in the current study were comparable to findings from other studies. Based on the results of our study, we advise the provision of ocular protective devices for sawmill workers and policies to enforce regular utilization.

BACKGROUND: Chemoprevention of colorectal neoplasia with aspirin and statins is under-investigated in Black patients. Since Black patients suffer disproportionately from colon cancer incidence and mortality compared to other populations, we investigated the utility of aspirin and statin in reducing advanced adenomatous polyp (AAP) risk in Black patients. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective cohort study of screening colonoscopies performed at a large urban academic center from 1/1/2011 through 12/31/2019. We analyzed self-identified Black patients with > 1 colonoscopy and no personal history of either inflammatory bowel disease or colon cancer syndromes. Our primary endpoint was first AAP development after index colonoscopy among Black patients taking both aspirin and a statin compared to those taking one or neither medication. We used multivariate logistic regression modeling to investigate our outcomes. RESULTS: We found data on chemoprophylaxis use in 560 patients. The mean observation period between index colonoscopy and AAP identification was 4 years. AAP developed in 106/560 (19%) of our cohort. We found no difference in AAP risk among Black patients taking both chemoprevention medications compared to partial or no chemoprophylaxis (20% vs 18% respectively, p = 0.49). This finding remained after adjusting for age, body mass index, and tobacco use (odds ratio 1.04, 95% CI 0.65-1.67; p = 0.87). CONCLUSIONS: Short-term aspirin-statin chemoprevention did not reduce the risk of AAP development in our cohort of Black patients. Larger and long-term prospective investigations are needed to investigate the utility of chemoprophylaxis in this population. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescent overweight and obesity is a public health concern globally, especially in lower- and middle- income countries where there is an additional burden of undernutrition. The prevalence of adolescent overweight/2obesity has increased markedly over the past three decades. The transition in dietary habits coupled with reduced physical activity has been blamed for the increasing trend. Overweight/obesity in adolescence is complicated by cardiometabolic, respiratory, musculoskeletal and psychosocial disorders. Additionally, adolescent obesity is a predictor of future development of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders. The burden of cardiometabolic risk factors associated with adolescent overweight/obesity in Ghana is lacking, the project, therefore, was undertaken to add to the existing knowledge. METHODS: The study was undertaken in adolescent students of a tertiary institution in Ghana. Two hundred and one students consented to participate in the study. Questionnaires on sociodemographic characteristics, dietary and substance abuse habits were self-administered. Blood pressure, height, weight and waist circumference measures were performed and venous blood drawn for the determination of fasting serum total/LDL/HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Body mass indices were determined as the weight per square of their heights. RESULTS: The prevalence of obesity was determined to be 15.81% generally, 27.71% in the females and 7.08% in the males. Diastolic blood pressure was the only cardiometabolic risk factor significantly associated with obesity in our study. CONCLUSION: Overweight/obesity is common in Ghanaian adolescents, with the prevalence highest in the female population.

Introduction: Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of anthrax, produces long-lived spores, which are resistant to heat, cold, pH, desiccation, and chemical agents. The spores maintain their ability to produce viable bacteria even after decades, and when inhaled can cause fatal disease in over half of the clinical cases. Owing to these characteristics, anthrax has been repeatedly selected for both bioweapon and bioterrorism use. In the event of a bioterrorism attack, surfaces in the vicinity of the attack will be contaminated, and recovering from such an event requires rapid and effective decontamination. Previous decontamination method development has focused mainly on temperatures >0°C, and have shown poor efficacy at subzero temperatures. Methods: In this study, we demonstrate the use of calcium chloride (CaCl2) as a freezing point depression agent for pH-adjusted sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for the effective and rapid decontamination of B. anthracis Sterne strain spores at subzero temperatures. Results: We show the complete decontamination of 106 B. anthracis Sterne strain spores at temperatures as low as -20°C within 2.5 min by submersion in solution containing 25% (w/v) CaCl2, 0.50% NaOCl, and 0.40% (v/v) acetic acid. We also demonstrate significant reduction in number of spores at -28°C. Conclusions: The results show promise for rapidly decontaminating equipment and materials used in the response to bioterrorism events using readily available consumer chemicals. Future study should examine the efficacy of these results on complex surfaces.

Due to its widespread applications and its ubiquitous occurrence in the environment, bisphenol A (BPA) and its alternatives have gained increasing attention, especially in terms of human safety. Like BPA, alternatives such as bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol AF (BPAF) have also been identified to be endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Hence, in this study, we reviewed the literature of BPA and its alternatives mainly published between the period 2018-2020, including their occurrences in the environment, human exposure, and adverse health effects. The review shows that bisphenols are prevalent in the environment with BPA, BPS, and BPF being the most ubiquitous in the environment worldwide, though BPA remains the most abundant bisphenol. However, the levels of BPS and BPF in different environmental media have been constantly increasing and their fates and health risks are being evaluated. The studies show that humans and animals are exposed to bisphenols in many different ways through inhalation and ingestion and the exposure can have serious health effects. Urinary bisphenols (BPs) levels were frequently reported to be positively associated with different health problems such as cancer, infertility, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. Our literature study also shows that BPs generate reactive oxygen species and disrupt various signalling pathways, which could lead to the development of chronic diseases. Activated carbon-based and chitosan-based sorbents have been widely utilized in the removal of BPA in aqueous solutions. In addition, enzymes and microorganisms have also been getting much attention due to their high removal efficiencies.

BACKGROUND: Warfarin is a high-risk medicine, and older persons (those aged 65 years and older)1,2 who take this therapy need medicines information about it that is at a level which is both understandable and comprehensive to improve their knowledge about the risks and benefits of warfarin therapy.3,4 Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to report patient feedback on a Warfarin Action Plan (WAP) (leaflet) and identify patients' preferences regarding its content and format. The secondary objective was to canvass in-depth feedback regarding the participants' information needs and current information-seeking practices with respect to warfarin therapy. METHOD: In an Australian General Practice medical centre setting, a qualitative study comprising 34 individual interviews was conducted. Emergent themes were elicited via a qualitative analysis using manual inductive coding. RESULTS: The majority of participants gave very positive feedback on the WAP leaflet, stating that it was a useful and concise resource. In canvasing this feedback, 4 themes emerged: (1) the need for information about warfarin therapy, (2) reliance on doctors and/or pharmacists for information, (3) the need for information to normalize their daily life, and (4) patients and carers acting on the new information. CONCLUSION: The WAP is a simple and well-received tool that meets the knowledge and education needs about warfarin therapy for older people and their carers.

IntroductionThe novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has become a severe global health threat since its emergence. Overcoming the virus is partly dependent on the holistic wellbeing of frontline health workers. Implications of COVID-19 on frontline health workers in West Africa could be substantial given the limited resources and logistics. This scoping review maps available literature on the impact of COVID-19 on frontline health workers in West Africa. Materials and methodsLiterature on the impact of COVID-19 on frontline health workers in West Africa were searched in six databases namely Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Africa Journals Online (AJOL) and CINAHL. Further search was done across websites of the ministries of health of West African countries and notable organisations. We conducted a narrative synthesis of the findings taking cognisance of the overarching purpose of the study and the research question. ResultsOf the 67 studies identified, 19 were included in the final synthesis. Three main themes emerged and these are impact of COVID-19 on frontline health workers, drivers of susceptibility to COVID-19 and government/donor support. A greater number of the studies originated from Nigeria. Each study reported at least one impact of COVID-19 on frontline health workers in West Africa. The impacts included death, fear, unwillingness to attend to COVID-19 patients and stigmatisation. Some health workers were not adhering to the safety protocols coupled with periodic shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and thereby had an increased susceptibility. ConclusionBeing the first scoping review on the impact of COVID-19 on frontline health workers in West Africa, the study has illustrated the urgent need for West African governments to enact laws/rules that would compel all frontline health workers to adhere to all the COVID-19 protocols at the workplace. To end intermittent shortage or issue of inadequate PPEs, governments ought to liaise with local industries by empowering them, providing financial support and creating a conducive atmosphere for them to produce cost effective PPEs using available local resources. Rapid and accurate diagnosis of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) presents a substantial challenge to the North American cattle industry. Here we utilize recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), a fast and sensitive isothermal DNA-based technology for the detection of four BRD pathogens (Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni, Mycoplasma bovis), genes coding antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and integrative conjugative elements (ICE) which can harbor AMR genes. Eleven RPA assays were designed and validated including: a) one conventional species-specific multiplex assay targeting the 4 BRD pathogens, b) two species-specific real-time multiplex RPA assays targeting M. haemolytica/M. bovis and P. multocida/H. somni, respectively with a novel competitive internal amplification control, c) seven conventional assays targeting AMR genes (tetH, tetR, msrE, mphE, sul2, floR, erm42), and d) one real-time assay targeting ICE. Each real-time RPA assay was tested on 100 deep nasopharyngeal swabs (DNPS) collected from feedlot cattle previously assessed for targets using either culture methods and/or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) verification (TC-PCR). The developed RPA assays enabled sensitive and accurate identification of BRD agents and AMR/ICE genes directly from DNPS, in a shorter period than TC-PCR, showing considerable promise as a tool for point-of-care identification of BRD pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes.

Three hundred crossbred chickens (at age of 11 wk) were randomly housed in 15 open-sided deep litter pens with 20 chickens in each pen under completely randomized design for a period of 9 wk. Before evaluating their hematobiochemical and carcass characteristics, the birds were provided with grower mash ad libitum throughout the experimental period. Blood samples were taken from each genotypic group (nanaff, Nanaff, and NanaFf), when the birds were 18 and 20 wk old, respectively, for the evaluation of hematobiochemical parameters. At the end of the trial, 15 chickens from each of the 3 genotypic groups were randomly selected and slaughtered to determine the carcass parameters. The findings from the study revealed that except for total cholesterol, spleen, and neck weight, there was no significant genotypic effect (P > 0.05) on hematobiochemical and carcass parameters measured. The nanaff genotype birds had significantly higher (P < 0.05) cholesterol levels than both Nanaff and NanaFf genotype birds, both of which did not differ significantly. The Nanaff had significantly (P < 0.05) higher spleen and neck weight than both the nanaff and NanaFf. The latter 2 did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). Also, hematobiochemical assays of all the birds were within normal range. From a health point of view, the indigenous naked neck genotype seems superior because its fat and cholesterol contents were low. Thus, it is strongly recommended that there should be a conscious effort to develop and commercialize the naked-neck and frizzled birds especially in developing countries.
