RESUMO

Despite one in three women experiencing abuse by an intimate partner in their lifetime, intimate partner violence (IPV) is under-reported. Globally, IPV routine enquiry is used as part of healthcare response to addressing IPV. This paper presents the views of pregnant women (n = 40) and providers (n = 30) of IPV routine enquiry as part of antenatal care policy in Ireland. Respondents supported IPV routine enquiry as part of usual antenatal care, and while immediate disclosure was recognized as important, it was not a primary expectation. Routine enquiry was seen as a woman's right and a providers' duty to provide holistic, empowered, women centered and safe care and where provision of information and education on IPV is as fundamental as the disclosure of abuse.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The provision and uptake of feedback on academic performance is widely debated throughout higher education. Whilst many educators strive to provide students with suitable feedback on their academic work, it is often reported that the feedback is frequently not delivered in a prompt or detailed manner or is not acted upon by students. Traditionally feedback has been delivered in writing, and this study investigates the potential value of an alternative method by providing formative feedback using short audio clips. AIM: The aim of the study was to determine baccalaureate student nurses' perceptions of the influence of audio feedback on the quality of their academic work. METHOD: This is a qualitative descriptive study conducted online to determine the perceived usefulness of formative feedback. A cohort of baccalaureate nursing students (n = 199) in one Higher Education Institution in the Republic of Ireland were offered audio and written feedback on an academic assignment. Following receipt of the feedback participants completed an anonymous online questionnaire exploring their perceptions of the usefulness of audio and written feedback. The questionnaire was analysed using a thematic analysis framework. RESULTS: Thematic data analysis identified four themes: connectivity, engagement, enhanced understanding, and validation. Findings indicate that both audio and written feedback on academic work were perceived to be beneficial, however almost all of the students indicated an overwhelming preference for audio feedback. A sense of connectivity between the lecturer and the student, created through the provision of audio feedback, was the prevailing theme throughout the data. Written feedback conveyed the relevant information, but the audio feedback was more holistic and multi-dimensional and included an emotional and personal quality to which the students responded positively. CONCLUSIONS: What has not been explicitly highlighted in earlier studies but is apparent in this study, is the centrality of this sense of connectivity as a motivator to student engagement with the feedback received. Students perceive that the engagement with the feedback enhances their understanding of how they might improve their academic writing. An enhanced link between the student and the academic institution during clinical placements, achieved by the audio feedback, was a welcome and unexpected finding beyond the aim of this study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The School of Nursing at Dublin City University offered a new blended learning Bachelor of Nursing Studies programme in the academic year 2011. AIM: To document the experiences of the academic team making the transition from a face-to-face classroom-delivered programme to the new blended learning format. METHOD: Academics who delivered the programme were asked to describe their experiences of developing the new programme via two focus groups. RESULTS: Five dominant themes were identified: Staff Readiness; Student Readiness; Programme Delivery and Student Engagement; Assessment of Module Learning Outcomes and Feedback; and Reflecting on the First Year and Thinking of the Future. Face-to-face tutorials were identified as very important to both academics and students. Reservations about whether migrating the programme to an online format encouraged students to engage in additional practices of plagiarism were expressed by some. Student ability/readiness to engage with technology-enhanced learning was an important determinant of their own success academically. DISCUSSION: In the field of nursing blended learning is a relatively new and emerging field which will require huge cultural shifts for staff and students alike.

RESUMO

The age-dependent decline in skeletal muscle mass and function is believed to be due to a multi-factorial pathology and represents a major factor that blocks healthy aging by increasing physical disability, frailty and loss of independence in the elderly. This study has focused on the comparative proteomic analysis of contractile elements and revealed that the most striking age-related changes seem to occur in the protein family representing myosin light chains (MLCs). Comparative screening of total muscle extracts suggests a fast-to-slow transition in the aged MLC population. The mass spectrometric analysis of the myofibril-enriched fraction identified the MLC2 isoform of the slow-type MLC as the contractile protein with the most drastically changed expression during aging. Immunoblotting confirmed an increased abundance of slow MLC2, concomitant with a switch in fast versus slow myosin heavy chains. Staining of two-dimensional gels of crude extracts with the phospho-specific fluorescent dye ProQ-Diamond identified the increased MLC2 spot as a muscle protein with a drastically enhanced phosphorylation level in aged fibres. Comparative immunofluorescence microscopy, using antibodies to fast and slow myosin isoforms, confirmed a fast-to-slow transformation process during muscle aging. Interestingly, the dramatic increase in slow MLC2 expression was restricted to individual senescent fibres. These findings agree with the idea that aged skeletal muscles undergo a shift to more aerobic-oxidative metabolism in a slower-twitching fibre population and suggest the slow MLC2 isoform as a potential biomarker for fibre type shifting in sarcopenia of old age.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to explore whether qualified nurses who had undertaken a continuing professional development module at a UK university, which utilised enquiry-based learning (EBL) as the educational strategy, believed that their nursing practice had been influenced by this educational approach. This study was underpinned by the assumptions of Gadamerian hermeneutic phenomenology; semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight nurses who had undertaken a continuing education module utilising an EBL approach. The responses in this study indicate that participants believed that their practice of nursing had been positively influenced by engaging in EBL. They felt that by becoming self-directed, critical, reflective practitioners, they were better able to deliver evidence-based practice/care. Self reports of practice change attributed to engaging in EBL were provided, with the patient identified as the principal beneficiary, echoing the espoused aims of continuing professional development. EBL was credited with being a motivating, energizing and enjoyable way of learning but participants were critical of the lack of preparedness of both the students and facilitators. Consideration needs to given as to whether EBL is viewed as a philosophy of learning or as a facilitative strategy used alongside other educational methods.
