RESUMO

A case of a 76-year-old woman with a giant malignant mucinous tumor of the right ovary, weighting 35 kg (FIGO III C), is presented. Surgical procedure was successfully performed, but the patient died on day 10 postoperatively with a picture of cardiorespiratory insufficiency.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We explored the value of transvaginal sonography as a screening technique for endometrial abnormalities. METHODS: Transvaginal sonography was used to evaluate the likelihood that an endometrial abnormality was present in a group of 103 women with postmenopausal bleeding. RESULTS: Sonographic findings showed a mean endometrial thickness of 6.2 mm in patients with endometrial atrophy, 12.4 mm in patients with simple hyperplasia, 13.4 mm in patients with complex hyperplasia, and 14.1 mm in patients with endometrial carcinoma. There was no statistically significant difference in endometrial thickness measurements between the hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma groups. However, the difference between these groups and the endometrial atrophy group was statistically significant. The mean age was significantly higher for patients with endometrial carcinoma (62 years) than for the patients in the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that transvaginal sonography is a useful method of screening for endometrial abnormalities.

RESUMO

In a prospective study conducted from 1981 to 1989, concentrations of estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors were determined by the saturation analysis of cytosols prepared from 67 samples of human endometrial tissue. Patients over 35 years of age who had come to the hospital because of irregular bleeding were included in the investigation. In the group examined it was found that 25 patients developed endometrial carcinoma, 22 hyperplasia adenomatosa and 20 patients had normal pathohistological findings. The median values of ER concentrations were 46, 99 and 31 fmol/mg of protein, with the ranges of 0-628, 0-2348 and 0-552 fmole/mg of protein in the group with normal endometrial tissue, hyperplastically transformed endometrial tissue and in the group with endometrial carcinoma, respectively. The median values of PR concentrations were 196, 307 and 96 fmol/mg of protein, with the ranges of 0-1714, 0-2402 and 0-582 fmole/mg of protein in the group with normal endometrial tissue, hyperplastically transformed endometrial tissue and in the group with endometrial carcinoma, respectively. In the group of patients with endometrial carcinoma 40% of ER+/PR+ tumors (greater than 50 fmole/mg of protein), 36% of ER-/PR-tumors, and 24% of ER-/PR+ tumors were found. The results of the median test showed that there were no statistically significant differences among ER concentrations (chi 2 = 2.822; P = 0.2439), or among PR concentrations (chi 2 = 3.582; P = 0.1668) in the groups of patients examined.

RESUMO

The authors examined the antiemetic effect of methylprednisolone (Lemod Solu) of the firm "Upjoh" in 35 patients with ovarian cancer in the course of the cisplatinum therapy. The control group comprised 15 patients with the same degree of ovarian cancer spreading in whom metoclopramide was used as the antiemetic. The antiemetic effect of methylprednisolone was found in the three fifths of patients having received the preparation from the first cisplatinum therapy cycle and in more than half of those in whom methylprednisolone was included in the second or third cisplatinum therapy cycle. The antiemetic effect of methylprednisolone proved to be significantly better than that of metoclopramide whose antiemetic effect was recorded in one fifth of the patients.

RESUMO

In 228 pregnant women examined by ultrasound in the 30th to the 40th week of gestation, the first placental maturity degree was found in the 31.6 week, the second degree in the 35.8 week, and the third degree in the 38.2 week. In 60 women with on term pregnancy also amniocentesis was carried out and the lecithin-sphingomyelin ratio (L/S) was compared with the ultrasound finding. In 6 of these pregnant women the third degree of placental maturity was observed, their L/S ratio was not below 2, and in their newborns no respiratory distress syndrome developed. Ultrasound estimation of placental maturity is a useful method in pregnancies in which no other methods could be applied.

RESUMO

Over a period of 5 years, among 108 ovarian carcinomas, malignant ovarian cells in the vaginal smears were found 8 times. No psammoma bodies were observed in any single case.

RESUMO

Estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors in 20 primary carcinomas of the ovary were studied by the customary DCC method. One of the receptors examined was found in 12 patients (60%) and both of them in 5 patients (25%). Serous types of tumour revealed a higher concentration of receptors than mucinous ones. The study of this kind is considered useful for the selection of patients in whom the adjuvant hormonal therapy could be applied.
