[The unstable-frequency EEG--as a concept and its correlations to neuropsychiatric diseases in children]. / Das frequenzlabile EEG--Begriff und Korrelation zu neuropsychiatrischen Affektionen beim Kind.

A total of 21,040 electroencephalograms obtained from 6,834 children constituting the routine patient stock of an electroencephalographic department of a pediatric clinic were checked for "frequency instability". It was possible to observe an age dependence of this characteristic and determine statistical correlations with certain clinical disease units showing different frequencies of this particular characteristic, especially neuropathies and neuroses.

[The significance of continuous fetal monitoring for further lowering of perinatal morbidity. Pilot study]. / Die Bedeutung der continuous fetal monitoring fur die weitere Senkung der perinatalen Morbiditat

By means of a pilot study we tried to calculate the perinatal morbidity after continuous fetal monitoring. From 810 electronical and biochemical monitored high-risk babies in the period from 1971 to 1973 we checked and/or have investigated 685 risk-newborns. Thereby 87 (=12,7%) were premature newborns. From this 685 risk-newborns 14 (=2,04%) appeared conspicuous. Only by 7 of them (=1,02%) we found mental and/or physical retardation. 2 of this children have a cerebral palsy. Causes of retardation with and without cerebral palsy we could lead back in the perinatal period. The causes are discussed. We point to the urgency of comprehensive follow-up studies.

Electroencephalograms showed - in accordance with many authors - important statements of perinatal damage and of her prognosis. The fetal monitoring (electronical and gasanalytical) is able to acknowledge in due time a hypoxic situation and procures favourable to the perinatal morbidity. Gross-pathological electroencephalograms we found in 5% of monitored high-risk babies in contrast to 17% of no monitored intrauterine patients.

The fate from children with a brithweight less than or equal to 2000 g in attendence of caesarean section is doubtful. From 35 children, born by caesarean section because of maternal and/or fetal indications died 17 (approximately 50 per cent). Maternal indication entitled always to perform sectio parva during the III. trimester of pregnancy--or to a earlier period. Clear fetal indication for caesarean section from the 34. week of gestation justified one-self. This is relative seldom. Caesarean section--performed before the 34. week of gestation--is changed with a high perinatal mortality and morbidity.
