RESUMO

Renewable energy (RE) facilities provide a global public good of climate mitigation but impose local costs such as landscape disruption and harming the rural character. Because of their land-intensive nature, utility-scale RE facilities tend to be located in rural areas with plentiful and cheap land. In the U.S., about every fourth county (729 of 3,143) has enacted ordinances restricting the siting of RE facilities. Drawing on a novel dataset of county-level restrictions on wind and solar RE facilities for the period 201o-2022, we explore whether, all else equal, levels of ruralness motivate the onset of such restrictions. As the policy literature on problem visibility suggests, we find support for this hypothesis for wind energy facilities only, probably because wind turbines due to their height tend to disrupt the rural landscape and are visible from long distances. We also find that counties are more likely to adopt restrictions for both wind and solar when adjacent counties have enacted them, thereby suggesting a contagion effect in the onset of restrictions. Contrary to the prevalent view on partisanship in climate policy, liberal counties are likely to restrict wind facilities. Our paper points to important sociological and quality-of-life factors that might be impeding the clean energy transition.

RESUMO

Investigating suicide risk factors is critical for socioeconomic and public health, and many researchers have tried to identify factors associated with suicide. In this study, the risk factors for suicidal ideation were compared, and the contributions of different factors to suicidal ideation and attempt were investigated. To reflect the diverse characteristics of the population, the large-scale and longitudinal dataset used in this study included both socioeconomic and clinical variables collected from the Korean public. Three machine learning algorithms (XGBoost classifier, support vector classifier, and logistic regression) were used to detect the risk factors for both suicidal ideation and attempt. The importance of the variables was determined using the model with the best classification performance. In addition, a novel risk-factor score, calculated from the rank and importance scores of each variable, was proposed. Socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors showed a high correlation with risks for both ideation and attempt. Mental health variables ranked higher than other factors in suicidal attempts, posing a relatively higher suicide risk than ideation. These trends were further validated using the conditions from the integrated and yearly dataset. This study provides novel insights into suicidal risk factors for suicidal ideations and attempts.

RESUMO

By simple pyrolysis of a tin salen complex [Sn(salen)] and sulfur powder at 700 °C, SnS nanoparticles with ∼20 nm thickness homogeneously embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon are prepared. When applied as lithium-ion battery anodes, the SnS/N-C nanocomposites exhibited long cycling stability and excellent rate capability.

RESUMO

A bismuth oxide electrode, delivering high capacity, as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries was simply prepared. The electrochemical properties of bismuth oxide were studied by operando X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy and ex situ X-ray diffraction methods. A bismuth oxide/carbon composite showed enhanced cycle stability at high current densities.
