OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effect of progressive relaxation exercises (PRE) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation administered to women delivering via cesarean delivery on acute pain, breastfeeding success, and comfort levels. METHODS: This is a single-blind, randomized controlled study. This study was carried out in the obstetrics and gynecology clinic of a university hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health in Turkey between August 20, 2018 and April 15, 2019. A total of 120 participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups, which included a transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS) group, a PRE group, a combined intervention group, and a control group. Data were collected with a Data Collection Form, The Visual Analogue Scale, The LATCH Breastfeeding Diagnostic Tool, and The Postpartum Comfort Scale. RESULTS: According to the findings of the study, it was determined that pain significantly decreased and comfort increased after having a cesarean delivery in all three intervention groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Regarding the breastfeeding success, while there was no statistically significant change in this behavior in the TENS group, it was significantly better in the PRE group and the combined intervention group, where TENS and PRE were administered together (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: According to our study results, we recommend that TENS and PRE should be employed together after a cesarean delivery as safe non-pharmacological methods in pain management, eliminating breastfeeding problems, and increasing comfort.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effects of a nurse navigation program on the capability for self-care, quality of life, risk of anxiety and depression, and severity of the physical symptoms of postpartum mothers. METHODS: This prospective, parallel-group, randomized controlled study included 64 primiparous pregnant women (32 women each in the intervention and control groups) at ≥36 gestational weeks admitted to the pregnancy outpatient clinic of a public hospital in Turkey. The intervention group received navigation program-based nursing care comprising three home visits, four phone calls, and five text messages aside from the standard hospital care during delivery and the postpartum period. Meanwhile, the control group received only the standard hospital care during delivery and the postpartum period. Data were collected using a sociodemographic data form, the Self-Care Power Scale, the Maternal Postpartum Quality of Life Instrument (MPQoL-I), the Postpartum Specific Anxiety Scale (PSAS), the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and the Postpartum Physical Symptom Severity Scale. RESULTS: Mean scores for the capability for self-care and quality of life were higher, while those for the risk of depression and anxiety were lower for the intervention group than the control group (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Navigation program-based care provided to primiparous mothers improved maternal health.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of nursing students' personality traits and leadership orientations on their career adaptability. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A total of 322 nursing students were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The methods used to collect data included the semi-structured data collection form, five factors personality scale, leadership orientation scale and career adaptation-abilities scale. FINDINGS: The regression model created to determine the effects of personality traits and leadership orientations on the students' career adaptability proved to be highly insightful. The students' leadership orientations have a statistically significant effect on their career adaptability score, with an explanatory coefficient of 43.1% and personality traits accounted for 18% of the career adaptability. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The results of this study indicated that leadership orientations and personality traits of the students exerted effects on the career adaptability of nursing students. Developing the leadership orientations of nursing students and being aware of their personality traits will contribute positively to the development of their career adaptability and strengthen the health system.

This research was conducted to examine the relationship of perceived social support, personality traits, and self-esteem of pregnant women with fear of childbirth. The study was performed between April 15, 2016 and May 15, 2016 using face-to-face interviews with 128 pregnant women who were at 28-40 weeks of pregnancy. A negative correlation between the fear of childbirth and the levels of social support perceived by pregnant women and a positive correlation between the fear of childbirth and self-esteem were observed. Furthermore, a negative correlation between the fear of childbirth and extraversion, self-discipline, and openness to development and a positive correlation between the fear of childbirth and neurotic personality traits were noted. Hence, we propose that social support status, personality traits, and self-esteem of pregnant women should be viewed as risk factors for the fear of childbirth.

Improvements in congenital heart surgery have resulted in an increasing number of infants surviving, but there remain concerns about home care and difficulties experienced by mothers. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of nursing care and follow-up for the mothers of infants undergoing congenital heart surgery on anxiety, care burden, and self-efficacy. The study was designed as a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The study included 40 mothers whose infants had undergone congenital heart surgery. Nursing care was provided to the mothers of the infants included in the study group through a total of six home follow-ups until the third month after surgery, guided by the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association and Nursing Diagnosis System and Nursing Interventions Classification. Data were collected through Care Needs Identification Form, Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Zarit Burden Interview, and Parental Self-efficacy Scale. The mean State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Zarit Burden Interview scores for the mothers in the intervention group decreased, while the mean Parental Self-efficacy Scale scores increased as the follow-up progressed and it was determined that by the third month, the difference between the mothers in the intervention group and those in the control group in terms of post-test State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Zarit Burden Interview, and Parental Self-efficacy Scale had become statistically significant. Providing appropriate nursing care practices to the mothers of the infants had undergone congenital heart surgery in home setting has the potential to decrease the problems experienced by the mothers.

PURPOSE: The present study evaluated the effect of the nursing care provided to the mothers of the infants born with a cleft lip and palate (CLP) until the time of cleft palate (CP) repair surgery, on maternal attachment and self-efficacy. DESIGN AND METHODS: The present study was designed as a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The study included 32 mothers whose infants were born with CLP and had undergone CL repair surgery. Nursing care was provided to the mothers and the infants included in the study group through a total of seven home visits over a period of nine weeks. The data for the study were collected using a socio-demographic form, a home-care needs evaluation form, the Maternal Attachment Inventory (MAI), and the Parental Self-Efficacy Scale (PSE). RESULTS: The scores for the mothers in the intervention group increased as the visits progressed, and it was observed that by the end of the ninth week, the difference between the mothers in the intervention group and those in the control group in terms of post-test MAI and PSE had become statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Providing nine weeks of home-based nursing care to the mothers and the infants has the potential of reducing the problems experienced by the mothers of infants born with CLP. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Obtaining a better understanding of the barriers to the nursing care provided to the mothers of the infants born with CLP in-home setting would contribute immensely to the development of appropriate nursing-care practices.

BACKGROUND: Gynecologic cancer can create hopelessness and death anxiety and alter the lifestyle of the affected women and their caregivers. Perceived social support may facilitate coping with this illness. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether hospitalized patients with gynecologic cancer and their caregivers differ in feelings of hopelessness and death anxiety and how those conditions may be related to their social support. METHODS: Two hundred patients with gynecologic cancer and their 200 caregivers from 1 university hospital were enrolled in this descriptive correlational study. Study measures included a demographic form, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Thorson-Powell's Death Anxiety Scale. Data were analyzed using Student t test, Pearson correlation test, and linear regression analyses. RESULTS: Patients had higher hopelessness and death anxiety compared with caregivers (P < .001). Patients' perceived social support explained 35% of the total variance in hopelessness and 28% of the variance in death anxiety; caregivers' perceived social support explained 40% of the total variance in hopelessness and 12% of the variance in death anxiety. CONCLUSION: Patients felt hopelessness and death anxiety in greater rates than caregivers. Social support had a significant effect on hopelessness and death anxiety of patients and their caregivers. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Nurses, who are the healthcare professionals spending time with patients and families from diagnosis forward, need to evaluate patients and their caregivers for hopelessness and death anxiety and consider their social support systems during this evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Psychosocial factors causing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are closely correlated with gender. Thus, this study's aim was to identify correlations between gender role attitudes (GRA) and PMS status of university students. METHODS: The participants of this descriptive study were 1515 female students from 13 departments of Hacettepe University using stratified sampling method. Data were collected between February and May 2014 using a semi-structured questionnaire, the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS), and the Gender Roles Attitude Scale (GRAS). Correlations between PMSS and GRAS scores were analyzed using the Spearman correlation coefficient. The difference between PMSS and GRAS scores in terms of sociodemographic characteristics was analyzed using the t-test and one-way analysis of variance. RESULTS: The mean total PMSS score was 117.96 ± 34.41, indicating moderate PMS levels. The total mean GRAS score was 162.71 ± 17.50, indicating an egalitarian GRA. As the gender roles in marriage of the participants became traditional, depressive thoughts and swelling became more common (rs= -0.620, p < .05; rs= -0.560, p < .05). The educational level of the mothers and perceived economic status were sociodemographic factors affecting both GRA and PMS. DISCUSSION: GRA and sociodemographic characteristics should be considered in healthcare services for PMS.

BACKGROUND: Various instructional environments are used in nurse education to develop students' psychomotor and communication skills, reduce their anxiety levels, and enhance their satisfaction. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of three different instructional environments on the development of the students' psychomotor and communication skills and their levels of anxiety and satisfaction. DESIGN: A prospective study design was used. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 60 nursing students. Before the implementation of the study, the students' cognitive skills and trait anxiety levels were evaluated. The students were divided into five groups and five nursing activities (Leopold's maneuvers, teaching breastfeeding, family planning education, teaching vulvar self-examination and teaching breast self-examination) were specified for each group. They implemented these nursing activities under the supervision of a faculty member in the nursing skills laboratory (NSL), standardized patient laboratory (SPL) and clinical practice environment (CPE) respectively. In each instructional environment, the students' psychomotor and communication skills, state anxiety levels and satisfactions were evaluated. RESULTS: The median scores for psychomotor skills [NSL=73.1;SPL=81.5;CPE=88.6] and communication skills [NSL=64.9;SPL=71.6;CPE=79.0] were found to increase as the students went on practicing in a more complicated environment (p<0.05). Similarly, it was determined that the students' anxiety levels decreased as they were practicing incrementally [NSL=33.0;SPL=32.0;CPE=31.0]. As the instructional environments were getting more similar to the reality, the students' satisfaction levels were found to become higher. CONCLUSIONS: Students who deliberately practice in the instructional environments until they are competent develop their psychomotor skills while reducing their anxiety levels, and enhancing their communication skills and satisfaction. For that reason, the development of students' competency areas is thought to be effective for enhancement of patients and health care workers' safety.
