RESUMO

We measured the time variation of a received laser signal level during snowfall over a distance of 72 m. The signal level dropped sharply for up to 10 ms when a snowflake crossed the laser beam. The probability distribution of the variation due to snowfall was calculated by assuming it to be the linear superposition of the light diffracted by snowflakes. The measured distributions could be reproduced by assuming reasonable snowflake size distributions. Furthermore, the probability distributions due to snowfall over a 1 km distance were calculated, and the expected bit errors during snowfall and the transmitted beam sizes were evaluated.

RESUMO

A simple and compact rewritable holographic memory system using a fieldstone of Ulexite is proposed. The role of the fieldstone is to impose random patterns on the reference beam to record plural images with the random-reference multiplexing scheme. The operations for writing and reading holograms are carried out by simply rotating the fieldstone in one direction. One of the features of this approach is found in a way to generate random patterns without computer drawings. The experimental study confirms that our system enables the smooth readout of the stored images one after another so that the series of reproduced images are projected as an animation.

RESUMO

In optical packet switching (OPS) and optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) systems, label generation and processing are key technologies. Recently, several label processors have been proposed and demonstrated. However, in order to recognize N different labels, N separate devices are required. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a large-scale, multiple optical code (OC)-label generation and processing technology based on multi-port, a fully tunable optical spectrum synthesizer (OSS) and a multi-wavelength electro-optic frequency comb generator. The OSS can generate 80 different OC-labels simultaneously and can perform 80-parallel matched filtering. We also demonstrated its application to OCDMA.

We implement a fully automatic fast face recognition system by using a 1000 frame/s optical parallel correlator designed and assembled by us. The operational speed for the 1:N (i.e., matching one image against N, where N refers to the number of images in the database) identification experiment (4000 face images) amounts to less than 1.5 s, including the preprocessing and postprocessing times. The binary real-only matched filter is devised for the sake of face recognition, and the system is optimized by the false-rejection rate (FRR) and the false-acceptance rate (FAR), according to 300 samples selected by the biometrics guideline. From trial 1:N identification experiments with the optical parallel correlator, we acquired low error rates of 2.6% FRR and 1.3% FAR. Facial images of people wearing thin glasses or heavy makeup that rendered identification difficult were identified with this system.

RESUMO

A simple method of rotating an optical fiber bundle is presented to apply the random-pattern referencing scheme to hologram multiplexing. In the theoretical study, a dependence of the diffraction efficiency on the number of spatial frequencies in the reference pattern is estimated with the Bragg diffraction theory. In the experiment, hologram multiplexing is performed in which 30 holograms are recorded in a LiNbO3 crystal and are read out by rotating a fiber bundle. The result shows that this simple approach enables us to perform the hologram multiplexing and also contributes to the building of a compact optical setup.
