RESUMO

CASE: We describe a patient with incomplete high median nerve palsy after surgical treatment of pediatric supracondylar humeral fracture (SCHF). Preoperative images after 11 months after the surgical treatment of the SCHF showed rotational deformity and an isolated median nerve entrapped between the proximal humerus anteriorly and callus posteriorly in the bony tunnel of the distal humerus. Two years after neurolysis, he showed clinical recovery. Four cases similar to our case were reported previously. CONCLUSION: Common pediatric fractures may cause unusual neuropathy. Rotational deformity of fracture might be an important factor for isolated median nerve entrapment after SCHF.

RESUMO

We report the case of a 69-year-old male patient with extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon rupture associated with a scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse (SNAC) wrist. He could not actively extend the left thumb interphalangeal joint and visited our institution for an examination. Plain X-rays revealed advanced stage SNAC and an enlarged soft tissue shadow owing to dorsal ridge growth. The patient was diagnosed with EPL tendon subcutaneous rupture due to SNAC. During surgery, the EPL tendon was found to be absent, a proximal-type scaphoid nonunion was detected, and bone growth to the dorsal part of the dorsal ridge was observed. Considering that the EPL tendon rupture was associated with the bone growth, we performed scaphoid lunate advanced collapse (SLAC) reconstruction and extensor indicis proprius tendon transfer which needed a revision tendon surgery afterward. To the best of our knowledge, EPL tendon ruptures caused by SLAC or SNAC are considered rare and have not yet been reported.

To understand the spawning ecology of the Japanese eel, the spawning time of this species was estimated based on measurements of the ascending speed of eggs and previously obtained data. Two types of water temperature parameters were calculated assuming an arbitrary spawning time. The 'incubation temperature' of 53 eggs collected in the spawning area was estimated based on the developmental stage of each egg and experimentally determined relationships between water temperature and incubation duration. The 'experienced temperature' of eggs ascending in the water column after spawning was estimated based on an ascending egg speed of 3.69 m/h and spawning depth of 230 m determined from a pop-up satellite archival tag release experiment on silver eels conducted in the same area. The incubation and experienced temperatures of the eggs coincided only at 20:20-22:30 h, 3 days prior to the new moon. This period is only a few hours after the diel vertical migration of Japanese eels in the evening, when adults move up from a depth of ~800 m (approximately 5 °C) to shallower waters of 200-250 m depth (approximately 20 °C). Our findings will facilitate improvements in aquaculture techniques and the detection of eel spawning events in the open ocean.

To assist in detection of offshore spawning activities of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica and facilitate interpretation of results of environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis in their spawning area, we examined the eDNA concentration released by each life history stage of artificially reared Japanese eels in the laboratory using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). We also compared eDNA concentrations between before and after artificially induced spawning activities. eDNA was not detected from three 30 L seawater tanks containing each single fertilized egg, but eDNA was found from other tanks each containing single individuals of larval stages (preleptocephalus and leptocephalus), juvenile stages (glass eel, elver and yellow eel) or adult stage (silver eel). The eDNA concentrations increased in the life history stages, showed a significant difference among all stages, and were positively correlated with the total length and wet weight. Moreover, the eDNA concentration after spawning was 10-200 times higher than that before spawning, which indicated that the spawning events in the ocean would produce relatively high eDNA concentration. These results in the laboratory suggested that eDNA analysis appears to be an effective method for assisting oceanic surveys to estimate the presence and spawning events of the Japanese eel in the spawning area.

Current literature states that family Scombropidae consists of a single genus Scombrops comprising three species worldwide, with two of them, Scombrops boops and Scombrops gilberti, distributed in the waters around the Japanese Archipelago. Although these two scombropids are commercially important species, little is known about the ecology of these fishes. It is difficult to discriminate between these two species based on external characteristics because of their morphological similarity. Here, we report two different morphotypes characterized by the relative growth between the otolith size and the standard length (SL) of the scombropid specimens caught in southern waters off Kyushu Island, Japan, and show the genetic relationship between the morphotypes by means of phylogenetic analyses using complete DNA sequences of the cytochrome b gene. The relationship between otolith weight and SL was significantly different between specimens < 505 mm SL and those > 550 mm SL. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the sequences from these scombropid specimens formed three clades: two corresponded to S. boops and S. gilberti, while the third did not correspond to any sequence recorded in databases, suggesting that these specimens are undescribed scombropid species. Almost all the specimens with SL < 505 mm (n = 76) were identified as S. boops, and only nine as S. gilberti. On the other hand, almost all the specimens with SL > 550 mm (n = 41) fell in the unidentified group except for four specimens, whose sequences were identical to that of S. boops.

In most teleost fish species, sperm competition is a key factor in determining male reproductive success, leading to selection on males to increase their reproductive investment in gonads and ejaculate competitiveness. In this study, reproductive investment patterns were assayed by examining the relative investment in gonads and sperm quality metrics (in river water and in the presence of ovarian fluid) of masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou, representing two fixed male alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs; small sneaking parr males and large dominant anadromous males). Although anadromous males were significantly larger in body size compared to parr males, the latter invested significantly more in relative gonad mass than the former. Sperm velocity and motility were significantly higher, and longevity was significantly lower in parr males than in anadromous males in river water. However, no difference in any of these sperm quality metrics was detected between the ARTs in the presence of ovarian fluid. Sperm velocity and motility were not affected by the presence of ovarian fluid compared to river water for parr males, but both traits increased significantly for anadromous males in ovarian fluid relative to river water, whereas longevity significantly increased in the presence of ovarian fluid compared to river water for both ARTs. We interpret these findings in light of potential cryptic female choice mechanisms and the sneak-guard model of sperm competition that is based on differences in sperm competition risk and alternative investment possibilities among ARTs.

To maximize reproductive success, males have to adaptively tailor their sperm expenditure in relation to the quality of potential mates because they require time to replenish their sperm supply for subsequent mating opportunities. Therefore, in mating contexts where males must choose among females in a short period of time, as is the case with semelparous species (which die after one intensely competitive short duration breeding season), selection on sperm allocation can be expected to be a powerful selective agent that shapes the male reproductive success. We quantitatively investigated sperm allocation patterns in chum salmon in relation to perceived female quality by developing a novel method for determining the amount of sperm allocated per ejaculate during spawning bouts. We examined the relationship between sperm expenditure and the body size of paired females (a proxy of egg number and egg quality) in the absence of male-male competition in an experimental channel. The estimated amount of sperm released per spawning event was positively correlated with the size of paired females. However, the number of spawning events a female participated in, which reduces the number of eggs she spawns in each subsequent bout, did not affect this relationship. These results provide support for predictions arising from the sperm allocation hypothesis, male salmon do economize their sperm expenditure in accordance with paired female body size as predicted for their first spawning event, but males overestimate or are unable to assess the quality of females beyond size and provide more sperm than they should in theory when paired with a female that spawned previously. Overall, the observed sperm allocation pattern in chum salmon appears to be adapted to maximize reproductive success assuming female size is an honest indicator of quality, although temporal changes in a female's quality during a reproductive season should be considered when examining sperm allocation strategies.

Cardiac arrest caused by startling stimuli, such as visual and vibration stimuli, has been reported in some animals and could be considered as an extraordinary case of bradycardia and defined as reversible missed heart beats. Variability of the heart rate is established as a balance between an autonomic system, namely cholinergic vagus inhibition, and excitatory adrenergic stimulation of neural and hormonal action in teleost. However, the cardiac arrest and its regulating nervous mechanism remain poorly understood. We show, by using electrocardiogram (ECG) data loggers, that cardiac arrest occurs in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) at the moment of gamete release for 7.39+/-1.61 s in females and for 5.20+/-0.97 s in males. The increase in heart rate during spawning behavior relative to the background rate during the resting period suggests that cardiac arrest is a characteristic physiological phenomenon of the extraordinarily high heart rate during spawning behavior. The ECG morphological analysis showed a peaked and tall T-wave adjacent to the cardiac arrest, indicating an increase in potassium permeability in cardiac muscle cells, which would function to retard the cardiac action potential. Pharmacological studies showed that the cardiac arrest was abolished by injection of atropine, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, revealing that the cardiac arrest is a reflex response of the parasympathetic nerve system, although injection of sotalol, a beta-adrenergic antagonist, did not affect the cardiac arrest. We conclude that cardiac arrest during gamete release in spawning release in spawning chum salmon is a physiological reflex response controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system. This cardiac arrest represents a response to the gaping behavior that occurs at the moment of gamete release.
