RESUMO
Paramecium caudatum and the predominant zooplanton organisms were registered in the studied pond of the Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The finding of Stentor coeruleus indicates an improvement in the environmental conditions in Kraków, connected with the partial liquidation of the huge steelworks.

In the water bodies of the Beskid Wyspowy Mts three species of the Paramecium aurelia complex have been found, i.e. P. biaurelia, P. tetraurelia and P. novaurelia. P. tetraurelia, which in Europe is a very rare species, was for the first time recorded in this region of the Carpathians.

This report reveals a significant acidity of the River Raba at all the investigated sampling points, and rather poor differentiation of the zooplanktonic organisms. At one sampling point the presence of Paramecium biaurelia was registered.

The seepage of water on the Gubernasówka clearing in the forest (alt. about 850 m) was investigated from the point of view of the occurrence of the Paramecium aurelia species complex and other zooplanktonic organisms. Though, none of the species of the complex was found, another morphological species of the Paramecium genus, i.e. Paramecium caudatum was registered.

The aim of this study was to register the zooplanktonic organisms in water bodies in the Zoological Garden in Kraków, especially from a point of view of the occurrence of species of the Paramecium aurelia complex. Only P. caudatum was found in one habitat, in several sampling places. The species seems very resistant and can survive in poor or polluted habitats in which the P. aurelia ssp. are eliminated.

In a natural but newly reconstructed pond the presence of P. biaurelia was revealed. The previous studies conducted in 1992 did not reveal the occurrence of any species of the Paramecium aurelia complex here.

After treatment of the paramecia with 0.0005% cartap solution a high mortality of the paramecia in the postautogamic experimental group was observed. In the studied postautogamic experimental daily isolation line some defective paramecia were found. The abnormality was manifested by a defective separation of animals during binary fission resulting in the formation of chain forms.

The present investigations revealed the occurrence of Paramecium triaurelia on the territory of the Kaczawskie Plateau, while its presence was confirmed in the Kaczawskie Mts. In Poland, the presence of this species was recorded only in the Western Sudeten, in spite of many years of investigation. As the result of the studies also the occurrence of P. biaurelia and P. novaurelia was recorded on the territory of the Kaczawskie Mts and the Kaczawskie Plateau.

The toxicity level of heterocyclic compound fractions obtained from dust in Silesia for Paramecium primaurelia was studied. For the estimation of their toxicity a special scale elaborated for this material was used. It was found that the level of toxicity of investigated fractions differed, depending on the sampling place and season of the year.

Species of the Paramecium aurelia complex occurred in the studied regions of the Carpathians and the Sudetes Mts with varying frequency. P. novaurelia appeared most often, P. biaurelia occurred less frequently but was also very characteristic, both species prevailed over P. primaurelia. P. tetraurelia and P. triaurelia were very rare.

The pyrethroide, Fastac 10 EC was tested on the paramecia and Tubifex sp. The results showed that both tests are valid for estimation of the toxicity of the pesticide. However, the Paramecium test is more sensitive when one is investigating the direct toxicity of the compound. The great validity of the Tubifex test lies in the possibility of tracing the teratogenic effects of the pesticides.

On the investigated territory three species of the complex were identified, namely Paramecium biaurelia, P. triaurelia, and P. novaurelia. P. novaurelia dominated over the other species with regard to the number of clones established from nature as well as to habitats.
