RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: Few previous studies have evaluated the effectiveness of single-isocenter multitarget (SIMT) stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in clinical practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Gross tumor volumes of 113 metastases in 13 patients were measured by contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. Prescribed doses were set at 20-24 Gy. Based on tumor reduction rates (TRRs) measured before and after SIMT SRS, tumor shrinkage effect was categorized into four grades; almost disappeared: TRR=1, decreased: 0.3≤TRR<1, stable: -0.2

RESUMO

Capital breeders develop gametes by using energy that was stored before the spawning season. Energy is allocated to growth and reproduction, and limited food availability affects the balance of energy allocation, especially in fish that mature within a year, such as western sand lance (Ammodytes japonicus). This species aestivates without feeding until winter spawning and utilize energy stores that were accumulated prior to aestivation for maturation and spawning. This study aimed to evaluate the growth, energy storage, maturation rate, and reproduction of A. japonicus in response to food availability before aestivation. We conducted laboratory experiments in which young-of-the-year A. japonicus were fed at rates of 4% and 1% of their body weight per day; assigned as high and low ration groups, respectively. In June, body length was found to be significantly larger in the high ration group than in the low ration group, but the somatic condition did not differ significantly between the groups. Maturation rates and average fecundities were 1.0 and 6297 in the high ration group and 0.8 and 2251 in the low ration group, respectively. These results indicate that food availability before aestivation strongly governs the reproductive potential of A. japonicus, and suggest the involvement of mechanisms in the inter-annual recruitment variation in sand lance species.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This multicenter study was conducted to evaluate the current variability of treatment planning of seed implantation in Japanese centers and the feasibility of two virtual trials. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Two types of contour data were sent to 12 radiation oncologists with a request letter that asked them to make treatment plans on the data in the same manner as in their own practice. Five of the 12 radiation oncologists were asked to participate in the two virtual trials in which the D90 (dose to the hottest 90% of prostate volume) was 1) required to be set at just 180 Gy and 2) increased as much as possible without violating other limitations. RESULTS: A relatively high dose with a small deviation was irradiated to the prostate in Japanese centers (mean D90 = 188 Gy; SD = 10 Gy). In the virtual trials, all five physicians could achieve 180 Gy for the D90 with a very small deviation, although the urethral dose showed relatively large deviations. Dose escalation without increase of urethral dose or V150 was difficult, although the rectum could be spared by most of the physicians. CONCLUSION: Our study showed a relatively high dose with a small deviation was prescribed to the prostate in Japanese centers. Consolidated protocols such as D90 = 180 Gy could be available for future trials. Meanwhile, our study suggested that some cautions might be needed for urethral dose and the V150, even when a relatively low D90 was requested.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Acute mesenteric ischemia can be caused by various conditions such as arterial occlusion, venous occlusion, strangulating obstruction, and hypoperfusion associated with nonocclusive vascular disease, and the CT findings vary widely depending on the cause and underlying pathophysiology. The aim of this article is to review the CT appearances of acute mesenteric ischemia in various conditions. CONCLUSION: Recognition of characteristic CT appearances and the variations associated with each cause may help in the accurate interpretation of CT in the diagnosis of mesenteric ischemia.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the embolization effects of gelatin microspheres (GMSs) when used as an embolic material for transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for several organs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prepared GMSs that dissolves in 5 days in extravasuclar tissue. GMSs were used in five cases in total, four cases with multiple liver tumors and one case with a pelvic bone tumor. RESULTS: In all five cases, it was possible to treat the targeted tumors by TAE with GMSs. In the contrast-enhanced CT performed 2-4 weeks later, the embolized tumors did not show an enhancement effect. Passage of GMSs in the microcatheter was excellent. CONCLUSION: GMSs showed sufficient potential to be used as an embolic material.
