RESUMO

Thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (CW-OSL, LM-OSL) are widely used by the scientific community in different applications. In order for the information of a glow or decay curve to be used correctly, the deconvolution of the corresponding curve is essential. Nowadays, there are plethora of deconvolution methods with none of them being dominant and universal. Recently, researchers created some new analytical equations for the TL, CW-OSL and the LM-OSL phenomena, based on the Lambert W function, with the use of a single master equation, as well as some new dose response curves based on a) the simple One Trap One Recombination (OTOR) model and b) the more complex Two Traps One Recombination (TTOR) model. The main aim of the study is to recreate these five expressions in different Excel spreadsheets, for a more practical use. The first step is the creation of a computational code of the Lambert W function in VBA at Excel. After that aim is achieved, five spreadsheets were created, namely the TL deconvolution, the CW-OSL deconvolution, the LM-OSL deconvolution, the OTOR model Dose response and the TTOR Dose response. In order to run some tests using these spreadsheets, four different sets of experimental data originated from different sources were used each time, with the calculated values being compared to the literature. In the end, the present study provides some notes and discussion about the applications of the newly created deconvolution spreadsheets.

RESUMO

Three newly discovered larval specimens of the genus Muraenolepis collected from the waters of the western Antarctic Peninsula are described. Knowledge of their natural history is sparse and information about their early life history is based on only a few larval stages. Here, the available literature on larval eel cods is reviewed, and the specimens placed in context.

RESUMO

The morphological diversity of fishes provides a rich source to address questions regarding the evolution of complex and novel forms. The Tetraodontiformes represent an order of highly derived teleosts including fishes, such as the pelagic ocean sunfishes, triggerfishes, and pufferfishes. This makes the order attractive for comparative analyses to understand the role of development in generating new forms during evolution. The adductor mandibulae complex, the main muscle associated with jaw closure, represents an ideal model system within the Tetraodontiformes. The adductor mandibulae differs in terms of partitions and their attachment sites between members of the different tetraodontiform families. In order to understand the evolution of the jaws among the Tetraodontiformes, we investigate the development of the adductor mandibulae in pufferfishes and triggerfishes as representatives of two different suborders (Balistoidei and Tetraodontoidei) that follows two different adaptations to a durophagous feeding mode. We show that the varied patterns of the adductor mandibulae derive from similar developmental sequence of subdivision of the partitions. We propose a conserved developmental program for partitioning of the adductor mandibulae as a foundation for the evolution of different patterns of subdivisions in Tetraodontiformes. Furthermore, we argue that derived conditions in the higher taxa are realized by supplementary subdivisions and altered attachment sites. These findings support a reinterpretation of homology of different muscle partitions among the Tetraodontiformes, as muscle partitions previously thought to be disparate, are now clearly related.

RESUMO

In case of chest trauma, the physician must always carefully evaluate the following parameters before to consider the case as uncomplicated (TTS): 1) the speed and circumstances of the accident; 2) the localization and the intensity of the pain; and 3) the presence of signs of respiratory failure and/or haemodynamic instability. Among patients aged greater than 65, the number of ribs fractured can predict mortality. Patients presenting with TTS, can be discharged from the hospital, provided they are prescribed with adequate analgesic medication and basic physiotherapy exercises, followed by a medical check-up after a five-day period.

RESUMO

According to the literature, straddle injuries of the perineum may result in arteriosinusoidal fistula and secondary high-flow priapism. We report a case of a 23-year-old man who developed a traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the cavernosal artery, secondary to straddle injury, and presented with painless priapism. It was treated successfully with superselective microcoil embolization and the priapism resolved.
