RESUMO

The number of traffic accidents (TAs) is rising each year, and the severity of injuries can vary. Many people experience limitations in activities of daily living following TAs, affecting their quality of life. In pregnant women, even simple injuries caused by a TA could lead to unfavorable obstetric outcomes. Thus, we conducted a retrospective chart review and follow-up questionnaire survey to assess the safety and effectiveness of integrative Korean medicine (KM) treatment for pregnant women injured in TAs. To assess integrative KM effectiveness, the numeric rating scale (NRS) for TA-related symptoms, neck disability index (NDI) score, Oswestry disability index (ODI) score, shoulder pain and disability index score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index score, EuroQol 5-dimension 5-level (EQ-5D-5L) score, and patient global impression of change score were investigated for pregnant women injured in TAs. Additionally, for safety evaluation, obstetric and neonatal outcomes, as well as symptoms related to pregnancy, were assessed. At the end of treatment and follow-up, there were significant reductions in NDI and ODI scores, as well as NRS for neck pain, lower back pain, and headache, compared to scores at baseline. EQ-5D-5L scores significantly increased. A follow-up of 50 patients showed no major differences in obstetric and neonatal outcomes compared to the typical outcomes that occur in pregnant women and neonates. Major improvements were observed in the symptoms of patients who underwent integrative KM treatment after being injured in TAs. The symptoms occurred at a rate similar to those in typical pregnant women, while causality with integrative KM treatment was assessed to be unlikely or unclear. Therefore, integrative KM treatment may be considered an alternative treatment option for pregnant women who currently have limited treatment options.

RESUMO

Background: Scalp-related symptoms such as dandruff and itching are common with diverse underlying etiologies. We previously proposed a novel classification and scoring system for scalp conditions, called the scalp photographic index (SPI); it grades five scalp features using trichoscopic images with good reliability. However, it requires trained evaluators.Aim: To develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for assessment of scalp conditions and to assess the feasibility of AI-based recommendations on personalized scalp cosmetics. Methods: Using EfficientNet, convolutional neural network (CNN) models (SPI-AI) ofeach scalp feature were established. 101,027 magnified scalp images graded according to the SPI scoring were used for training, validation, and testing the model Adults with scalp discomfort were prescribed shampoos and scalp serums personalized according to their SPI-AI-defined scalp types. Using the SPI, the scalp conditions were evaluated at baseline and at weeks 4, 8, and 12 of treatment. Results: The accuracies of the SPI-AI for dryness, oiliness, erythema, folliculitis, and dandruff were 91.3%, 90.5%, 89.6%, 87.3%, and 95.2%, respectively. Overall, 100 individuals completed the 4-week study; 43 of these participated in an extension study until week 12. The total SPI score decreased from 32.70 ± 7.40 at baseline to 15.97 ± 4.68 at week 4 (p < 0.001). The efficacy was maintained throughout 12 weeks.Conclusions: SPI-AI accurately assessed the scalp condition. AI-based prescription of tailored scalp cosmetics could significantly improve scalp health.

RESUMO

Although men typically hold favorable views of advertisements featuring female sexuality, from a Terror Management Theory perspective, this should be less the case when thoughts of human mortality are salient. Two experiments conducted in South Korea supported this hypothesis across a variety of products (e.g., perfume and vodka). Men became more negative towards advertisements featuring female sexuality, and had reduced purchase intentions for those products, after thinking about their own mortality. Study 2 found that these effects were mediated by heightened disgust. Mortality thoughts did not impact women in either study. These findings uniquely demonstrate that thoughts of death interact with female sex-appeal to influence men's consumer choices, and that disgust mediates these processes. Implications for the role of emotion, and cultural differences, in terror management, for attitudes toward female sexuality, and for marketing strategies are discussed.

RESUMO

Oil spill accidents occasionally occur in coastal and ocean environments, and cause critical environmental damage, spoiling the marine habitats and ecosystems. To mitigate the damages, the species and amount of spilled oil should be monitored. In this study, we developed a waterborne oil spill sensor using a printed ITO layer. ITO is a compatible material for salty environments such as oceans because ITO is strong against corrosion. The fabricated sensor was tested using three oils, gasoline, lubricant and diesel, and different oil thicknesses of 0, 5, 10, and 15mm. The results showed that the resistance of the sensor clearly increased with the oil thickness and its electrical resistance. For sustainable sensing applications in marine environments, XRD patterns confirmed that the crystal structure of the ITO sensor did not change and FE-SEM images showed that the surface was clearly maintained after tests.
