RESUMO

We propose a compact wearable glove capable of estimating both the finger bone lengths and the joint angles of the wearer with a simple stretch-based sensing mechanism. The soft sensing glove is designed to easily stretch and to be one-size-fits-all, both measuring the size of the hand and estimating the finger joint motions of the thumb, index, and middle fingers. The system was calibrated and evaluated using comprehensive hand motion data that reflect the extensive range of natural human hand motions and various anatomical structures. The data were collected with a custom motion-capture setup and transformed into the joint angles through our post-processing method. The glove system is capable of reconstructing arbitrary and even unconventional hand poses with accuracy and robustness, confirmed by evaluations on the estimation of bone lengths (mean error: 2.1 mm), joint angles (mean error: 4.16°), and fingertip positions (mean 3D error: 4.02 mm), and on overall hand pose reconstructions in various applications. The proposed glove allows us to take advantage of the dexterity of the human hand with potential applications, including but not limited to teleoperation of anthropomorphic robot hands or surgical robots, virtual and augmented reality, and collection of human motion data.

This study aimed to explore the needs and wants of older adults in the context of movement-assistive clothing (MSC), with a focus on muscle strength and posture correction. A survey was conducted to understand the needs and wants of older adults, considering aspects of functions and designs, and to evaluate the comfort, safety, ease of use, usefulness, and intention of users to purchase and use products. A total of 408 individuals aged > 65 years participated in the study. The data were analyzed using descriptive analyses, such as mean, standard deviation, percentages, Cronbach's alpha, chi-square test, independent t-test, analysis of variance, and regression using IBM SPSS 27.0. Exploratory Factor Analysis was also conducted to test the hypotheses. Open-ended questions were extracted using major themes after color-coding. Based on the results, design recommendations were derived, including the development of pants and innerwear with casual, minimalist styles, featuring achromatic colors, and utilizing stretchy, breathable fabrics. Comfort, safety, ease of use, and usefulness emerged as critical factors influencing the purchase and use of MSC by older adults. This study aimed to establish design guidelines by understanding the needs and wants of older adults and considering the aspects of movement-assistive clothing to relieve musculoskeletal issues. Accordingly, these findings are expected to aid in the creation of wearable suits using flexible fabric artificial muscles for active musculoskeletal correction in older adults.

Anchoring components are added to wearable robots to ensure a stable interaction between the suits and the human body and to minimize the displacement of the suits. However, these components can apply pressure to the body and can cause user dissatisfaction, which can decrease willingness to use the suits. Therefore, this study aims to develop a suit-type soft-wearable robot platform for walking assistance by providing comfortable garment pressure to ensure user satisfaction. The first prototype of a wearable robot suit was developed with anchoring components on the shoulders, waist, and thighs based on previous research results. Wear tests were conducted to measure garment pressure depending on posture using pressure sensors, and satisfaction surveys were conducted. The second prototype design was then developed, and performance tests with flexible artificial muscles and a satisfaction survey were conducted. Regarding the first prototype, the participants felt more than normal pressure in the shoulders and relatively less pressure in the thighs and calves. Thus, compared to the first design, the second design ensured a decreased garment pressure and resulted in an improvement of overall user satisfaction. These results can help provide guidance in the development of wearable robots by taking pressure comfort and user satisfaction into consideration.

Gardening is a common leisure pursuit for many older individuals, and previous research found that gardening activities provide numerous health benefits. Many hazardous situations can occur when gardening, and experts have suggested that older gardeners wear protective gardening garments when gardening. However, there is a lack of research about the important features that must be considered for gardening garments, particularly for older individuals. Thus, this study investigated important design factors for developing gardening garments for older adults, including their design preferences for such garments. This study focused on the population who were born before the year 1960, as this age cohort has begun retiring and shows significant buying power. In-depth interviews and surveys were conducted to achieve the research purpose. The findings from this study will offer insights for designers who seek to better understand and market to this age cohort by designing relevant garments for their gardening activities.

We measured the electrical activity signals of the heart through vital signs monitoring garments that have textile electrodes in conductive yarns while the subject is in stable and dynamic motion conditions. To measure the electrical activity signals of the heart during daily activities, four types of monitoring garment were proposed. Two experiments were carried out as follows: the first experiment sought to discover which garment led to the least displacement of the textile electrode from its originally intended location on the wearer's body. In the second, we measured and compared the electrical activity signals of the heart between the wearer's stable and dynamic motion states. The results indicated that the most appropriate type of garment sensing-wise was the "cross-type", and it seems to stabilize the electrode's position more effectively. The value of SNR of ECG signals for the "cross-type" garment is the highest. Compared to the "chest-belt-type" garment, which has already been marketed commercially, the "cross-type" garment was more efficient and suitable for heart activity monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Cdx4 is a homeobox gene essential for normal blood formation during embryonic development in the zebrafish, through activation of posterior Hox genes. However, its role in adult mammalian hematopoiesis has not been extensively studied and its requirement in leukemia associated with Hox gene expression alteration is unclear. DESIGN AND METHODS: We inactivated Cdx4 in mice through either a germline or conditional knockout approach and analyzed requirement for Cdx4 in both normal adult hematopoiesis and leukemogenesis initiated by the MLL-AF9 fusion oncogene. RESULTS: Here, we report that loss of Cdx4 had a minimal effect on adult hematopoiesis. Indeed, although an increase in white blood cell counts was observed, no significant differences in the distribution of mature blood cells, progenitors or stem cells were observed in Cdx4-deficient animals. In addition, long-term repopulating activity in competitive transplantation assays was not significantly altered. In vitro, B-cell progenitor clonogenic potential was reduced in Cdx4-deficient animals but no significant alteration of mature B cells was detected in vivo. Finally, induction of acute myeloid leukemia in mice by MLL-AF9 was significantly delayed in the absence of Cdx4 in a retroviral transduction/bone marrow transplant model. CONCLUSIONS: These observations indicate that Cdx4 is dispensable for the establishment and maintenance of normal hematopoiesis in adult mammals. These results, therefore, outline substantial differences in the Cdx-Hox axis between mammals and zebrafish and support the hypothesis that Cdx factors are functionally redundant during mammalian hematopoietic development under homeostatic conditions. In addition, our results suggest that Cdx4 participates in MLL-AF9-mediated leukemogenesis supporting a role for Cdx factors in the pathogenesis of myeloid leukemia.

Polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and myeloid metaplasia with myelofibrosis (MMM) are clonal disorders arising from hematopoietic progenitors. An internet-based protocol was used to collect clinical information and biological specimens from patients with these diseases. High-throughput DNA resequencing identified a recurrent somatic missense mutation JAK2V617F in granulocyte DNA samples of 121 of 164 PV patients, of which 41 had homozygous and 80 had heterozygous mutations. Molecular and cytogenetic analyses demonstrated that homozygous mutations were due to duplication of the mutant allele. JAK2V617F was also identified in granulocyte DNA samples from 37 of 115 ET and 16 of 46 MMM patients, but was not observed in 269 normal individuals. In vitro analysis demonstrated that JAK2V617F is a constitutively active tyrosine kinase.
