RESUMO

The clinical, radiographic, and pathological features of a juxtacortical chondrosarcoma of the mandible in a 25-year-old Caucasian woman are presented and the differential diagnostic aspects are discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this rare tumor has not previously been reported in the maxillofacial skeleton. Ten years after surgery there is no evidence of local recurrence or metastatic disease. As the prognosis of juxtacortical chondrosarcoma of the long bones seems to be relatively favorable compared with the usual central chondrosarcoma of similar grade of malignancy, this might also be expected for a similar tumor presentation in the maxillofacial skeleton.

RESUMO

In a 38-year-old woman who was examined because of an otherwise asymptomatic palpable nodule in the thyroid region, a cystic parathyroid adenoma was diagnosed. The aspirate was clear with a slight yellowish colour and a very high parathormone concentration. The serum-calcium concentration was also very high. The lesion was surgically removed. The surgical specimen contained a parathyroid adenoma with pseudocystic degenerative changes. The patient recovered fully.

RESUMO

Signet-ring cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is a rare tumour, accounting for approximately 0.24% of all bladder malignancies. In this study, the clinicopathological findings in 13 cases are described. This malignancy is far more common in men than in women (ratio 11:2). The distribution by age and clinical symptoms can not distinguish it from transitional cell carcinoma. The tumour behaves like other high grade malignancies, presenting frequently at an advanced stage, and having an unfavourable clinical outcome. No special therapy seems superior to another.

RESUMO

A 63-year-old, Dutch, HIV-seronegative man presented with anal pain and itch of 6 months' duration, a perianal ulcer and a solitary colon ulcer. Crohn's disease was suspected; the patient was treated with corticosteroids, but later died. Autopsy revealed disseminated histoplasmosis, a fungal disease rare in the Netherlands. The patient had visited Honduras. This case report illustrates that disseminated histoplasmosis may mimic Crohn's disease leading to a delay in the diagnosis.

RESUMO

Pneumopericardium, the presence of air in the pericardial space, is a rare disorder that is usually caused by trauma. We describe a patient given induction chemotherapy for acute myelogenous leukemia who developed pulmonary aspergillosis that resulted in pericarditis and pneumopericardium. He responded to antifungal treatment and recovered from granulocytopenia, but died early during the next course of chemotherapy. Two other reported cases of pneumopericardium associated with pulmonary aspergillosis are summarized.

RESUMO

This study is an analysis of the mortality, due to malignant tumours and leukemia in Dutch children (0-14 years), based on data obtained from the 'Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek' (Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics). In the period 1971-1983, this mortality showed a gradual decrease. The mortality of leukemia and lymphomas, which contribute about 50% of all childhood cancer, contributed a major part to this decrease. The solid tumours have also shown a decrease in mortality. The registered mortality of brain tumours increased. The decrease in mortality had already begun before the centralization of treatment had been started in 1974/'75. Detailed research into the influence of centralization on mortality is required. The authors also recommend research into the apparent increase in mortality of brain tumours.
