BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Observance of preventive behaviors is one of the main ways to break the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) chain of transmission. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the knowledge and behaviors of prevention of COVID-19 and the related factors in the rural population of Rasht city. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 344 people of the population referred to health centers in Rasht city were included through multi-stage cluster random sampling. The data were collected using a three-part researcher-made questionnaire including individual-social factors, knowledge about the prevention of COVID-19, and the preventive behaviors against COVID-19. Data analysis was performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests, Spearman's correlation coefficient, and multiple logistic regression analysis, by SPSS software version 16 at a significance level < 0.05. RESULTS: The mean total score of knowledge about COVID-19 was at a moderate level, and the preventive behaviors of COVID-19 were at a good level. There was no significant relationship between the scores of awareness and preventive behaviors of COVID-19 (rs=0.001, P = 0.998). Awareness of COVID-19 was higher in university-educated individuals and women. Also, women, individuals who had access to the Internet, those trained by health centers, and those who were visited by health workers at home had more preventive behaviors. CONCLUSION: Despite the lack of connection between knowledge and preventive behaviors, the villagers living in the suburbs of Rasht had a moderate level of knowledge and a good level of preventive behaviors of COVID-19. Appropriate educational interventions should be carried out to increase the awareness and performance of the rural residents.

Four sesquiterpene lactones, astrodaucanolide A - D (1: -4: ) with unique structures, toghether with two known phenylpropanoid esters (5: and 6: ) were isolated from a flower extract of Astrodaucus orientalis. The structures were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRESIMS), and the absolute configuration of 1: -4: was determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD). Compounds 1: -4: novel architecture represents a new class of sesquiterpenes with new skeleton. A putative biosynthetic pathway for their scaffold is proposed with a germacryl cation as the precursor. The suggested biosynthesis pathway is similar to that of eudesmane sesquiterpenes with a different direction of protonation which then leads to the new skeleton, named astrodaucane by the 1,2-methyl migration.

Background and objectives: Zingerone is an ingredient of ginger (Zingiber officinale) with different pharmacological activities. Several studies have investigated the effect of zingerone on various gastrointestinal diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea. This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of zingerone on ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Materials and Methods: Gastric ulcers were induced by ethanol (96%, 5 mL/kg, po) in male wistar rats and zingerone (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) was administrated orally. Normal saline and ranitidine were used as negative and positive control, respectively. In this study, the number and length of ulcers, and malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in stomach tissues were determined. Results: The findings showed that the mean number and length of gastric ulcers were significantly lower in zingerone-received groups than ethanol group (P < 0.05). The level of malondialdehyde was decreased in the stomach of zingerone groups (P < 0.05) compared to the ethanol group. In addition, zingerone treatment prevented the decrease of nitric oxide level by ethanol in the stomach tissue. Conclusions: The present study showed that zingerone has a protective effect on the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer, which may be due to its free radical scavenging activity.

BACKGROUND: Ghrelin is a novel peptide hormone that has GH releasing activity and also other endocrine and metabolic functions. It can also increase food intake and decrease T3 and T4 concentrations. Several parameters of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis function are modulated by 17ß-estradiol (E2). OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of interactions between ghrelin and estradiol (injected via ICV route) on plasma T3 and T4 concentrations in female rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen Wistar female rats (bodyweight, 200-250 g) were randomly divided into three groups. Group 1 received estradiol, Group 2 received ghrelin and Group 3 received ghrelin and estradiol. Plasma samples were used to assess T3 and T4 concentration by RIA. RESULTS: The results indicated that ghrelin significantly decreased thyroid hormone concentrations, whereas estradiol increased these concentrations. The simultaneous injection of ghrelin and estradiol significantly decreased the inhibitory effect of ghrelin on thyroid hormone concentrations (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of this study, both ghrelin and estradiol affect the concentration of thyroid hormone but in opposite directions. This difference might be due to different underlying hormonal mechanisms such as HPA and/or HPT axis melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) systems could be suggested.

Vanillic acid (VA) is a phenolic acid, and acts as a natural antioxidant in fruits, vegetables and plants. The extraction and determination of trace levels of VA in plants is important, because stimulation of protein synthesis and activation of antioxidant enzymes occur in the presence of phenolic acids at trace levels. In this research, a photoluminescence spectroscopic method was developed for the quantification of VA in plant samples after separation and pre-concentration. Selective extraction of VA from aqueous solution was performed using a solid-phase extraction column packed with nickel-aluminum layered double hydroxide as a nano-sorbent. After elution of extracted analyte from the column using 3 mL of a 3 mol/L NaOH solution, its concentration was determined spectrofluorometrically at λ(em) = 357 nm with excitation at λ(ex) = 280 nm. The spectrofluorometry method gave a linear response for VA within the range 20.0-900.0 µg/L, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9982. The limit of detection and sorption capacity were 7.6 µg/L and 66.2 mg/g, respectively. The method was validated by comparing the obtained results with gas chromatographic data. This method was used to determine VA in Chenopodium album and Prangos asperula plants.

A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the adiponectin gene, 45T/G, has been reported in relation to a number of metabolic disorders, including obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes. However, previous studies on the association between this SNP and the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) have been few, with no report from Iranian subjects. The present study set out to investigate the association between this SNP and CAD in an Iranian population. Among 464 patients (age: 18-75 years), recruited from individuals who underwent coronary angiography, 135 patients had less than 50% reduction of coronary artery diameter and were classified as the CAD- group and 329 patients had more than 50% reduction of coronary artery diameter and were classified as the CAD+ group. The last group was divided into single-vessel disease (n = 86), two-vessel disease (n = 111), and three-vessel disease (n = 132). Healthy subjects (n = 106) who did not have any history of heart diseases were also recruited as the control group. All subjects were genotyped for the 45T/G polymorphism using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique. A significantly higher frequency of the TG genotype and G allele, which was paralleled by a lower frequency of the TT genotype and T allele, was observed in both CAD+ and CAD- patients when compared with the control group (p ≤ 0.001). There was no significant difference in the genotype distribution and allele frequencies between CAD+ and CAD- patients, and also between different subgroups of patients based on the number of stenosed vessels (p > 0.05). Our findings indicate that the presence of the G allele at the position +45 of the adiponectin gene may be associated with the risk of CAD in our study population. While we found no significant difference in the genotype distribution and allele frequencies between patients with angiography+ and angiography, this may be because the 50% stenosis cut-off does not discriminate sufficiently between individuals with and without significant coronary disease.
