RESUMO

Range of ultrasounds used in medical imaging is between 2 and 80 MHz. The highest frequencies are applied in medical imaging of an anterior segment of an eyeball. This paper covers the newest method of ultrasound imaging - an ultrabiomicroscopic examination. Its name reflects resolution which has so far been unavailable, and which allows for imaging a structure of the examined tissues. The article includes basic information about the structure and principles of operation of ultrabiomicroscopic examination tools. Moreover, its position among other methods for echographic examination of an eyeball was determined. Examination techniques and the role of standards of conduct at each stage of a diagnostic procedure were discussed. A role of insufficient cooperation between constructors of new ultrasonographic diagnostic tools and software IT specialist with the users of these tools, which results in the lack of consistency between the components of these sets was emphasized. Based on long term experience in ultrabiomicroscopic examinations, the authors shared observations on practical aspects of this method. Finally, indications and contraindications for ultrabiomicroscopic diagnostics were listed. Introduction of an ultrahigh frequency ultrasound probe allowed for the visualization of an post-iridial area of an anterior segment of an eyeball - an area whose diagnosis is impossible with other diagnostic methods. A wide spectrum of diagnostic indications, which covers both diseases and development anomalies of an anterior segment of an eyeball, confirms a special meaning of this method.Range of ultrasounds used in medical imaging is between 2 and 80 MHz. RESUMO

We report a case study of a 63-year-old female admitted to our department with substantially decreased vision in her right eye. Bilateral uveal effusion syndrome concomitant with nanophthalmos was diagnosed. The patient received systemic treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and underwent sclerectomy with topical application of mitomicin C. Gradual resolution of the retinal detachment leading to full reattachment was observed over the next 2 months. Retinal detachment did not reoccur in a long-term follow up.

RESUMO

The authors present a case of 39 years old male who was admitted to the hospital with non-specific vision disorders. The clinical features and radiological examination have led to the diagnosis of arteriovenosum malformation in midbrain. In case of that patient it is worth noticing the difference between the size and location of malformation and its clinical symptoms. The neurological symptoms didn't indicate that there is arteriovenous malformation of that size in midbrain and shows the importance of radiological examination in neurological practice. Location of malformation was also a problem in choosing the way of treatment. Radiotherapy was chosen as less invasive in case of that patient. The patient is currently undergoing radiotherapy in Oncology Center in Gliwice, in general satisfactory condition.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional ultrasound tomography of the eye is a new advanced technique of ocular ultrasonography. The aim of this work was to present a new interesting ultrasound unit with possibility of three-dimensional ultrasound tomography, after half year experience with this system. The article describes scanning techniques using acommercial 3-D ultrasound system (OTI-Scan 1000) and presents how to assess the dimensions of intraocular structures anddocument them volumetrically.
