[Focal segmental resection of the stomach in the surgical treatment of gastric ulcer]. / Pritsel'naia segmentarnaia rezektsiia zheludka v khirurgicheskom lechenii iazvy zheludka.

In 60 patients with gastric ulcer, the target segmental resection of the stomach alone, or in combination with selective proximal vagotomy was performed. The long-term result of treatment was followed up for the period of from 2 to 5 years. An excellent and good result was noted in 34 cases, a satisfactory one--in 4.

[Identification of a nature of mutation in the 12th exon of phenylalanine hydroxylase gene in patients with phenylketonuria]. / Opredelenie prirody mutatsionnogo povrezhdeniia v 12-om ékzone fenilalaningidroksilaznogo gena u bol'nykh fenilketonuriei.

Upon amplification in vitro of the 12th exon area of the human phenylalanine hydroxylase gene followed by allele-specific hybridisation of the amplification product with synthetic probes and its sequencing by the Maxam-Gilbert method, a C----T transition causing phenylketonuria has been identified in Latvian patients.

[A method of questionnaire sampling of patients in assessing the late results of selective proximal and truncal vagotomies]. / Metod anketnogo oprosa bol'nykh v otsenke otdalennykh rezul'tatov selektivnoi proksimal'noi i stvolovoi vagotomii.

An analysis of questionnaires distributed among 243 patients with a history of selective and truncal vagotomy for duodenal ulcer indicates that questionnaires are an effective method of detecting late postoperative complications. An analysis of results of surgical treatment of these patients revealed a more favourable course of the late postoperative period after selective proximal vagotomy and gastric drainage procedure.

[Role of blood flow in the etiology of pain caused by ulcer and its cessation after vagotomy]. / Rol' krovotoka v vozniknovenii iazvennykh bolei i ikh prekrashchenii posle vagotomii.

The author examined 124 patients with duodenal ulcer prior to and after various types of vagotomy. There were 96 males and 28 females whose age ranged from 18 to 76 years. The regional blood flow in the gastric and duodenal mucosa was measured by the hydrogen clearance method. The results provide evidence that along with increase acid- and pepsin-production, the intensity of the local blood flow in the duodenal mucosa is reduced in patients with duodenal ulcer. After vagotomy the debit of hydrochloric acid and pepsin reduces and the intensity of the blood flow in the duodenal mucosa increases. The combination of these two effects of vagotomy facilitates the cessation of pain during the first postoperative days.

[Disordered immunologic reactivity in patients with chronic calculous cholecystitis]. / Narushenie immunologicheskoi reaktivnosti u bol'nykh khronicheskim kal'kuleznym kholetsistitom.

In patients with chronic calculous cholecystitis, the number of T-lymphocytes decreased, the number of B-lymphocytes and their ability to transform into the blasts in response to stimulation of the specific bacterial antigen increased, the synthesis of immunoglobulins intensified, a titre of the antibodies specific to microflora of the biliary mucosa grew, the levels of complement, lysozyme and properdin decreased, the bacterial activity of blood serum was suppressed. It is necessary to correct these disorders in the process of preoperative preparation of the patients.
