RESUMO

The potential of selected spectroscopic methods - UV-Vis, synchronous fluorescence and NIR as well a data fusion of the measurements by these methods - for the classification of tea samples with respect to the production process was examined. Four classification methods - Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA), Regularized Discriminant Analysis (RDA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) - were used to analyze spectroscopic data. PCA analysis was applied prior to classification methods to reduce multidimensionality of the data. Classification error rates were used to evaluate the performance of these methods in the classification of tea samples. The results indicate that black, green, white, yellow, dark, and oolong teas, which are produced by different methods, are characterized by different UV-Vis, fluorescence, and NIR spectra. The lowest error rates in the calibration and validation data sets for individual spectroscopies and data fusion models were obtained with the use of the QDA and SVM methods, and did not exceed 3.3% and 0.0%, respectively. The lowest classification error rates in the validation data sets for individual spectroscopies were obtained with the use of RDA (12,8%), SVM (6,7%), and QDA (2,7%), for the UV-Vis, SF, and NIR spectroscopies, respectively. NIR spectroscopy combined with QDA outperformed other individual spectroscopic methods. Very low classification errors in the validation data sets - below 3% - were obtained for all the data fusion data sets (SF + UV-Vis, SF + NIR, NIR + UV-Vis combined with the SVM method). The results show that UV-Vis, fluorescence and near infrared spectroscopies may complement each other, giving lower errors for the classification of tea types.

The potential of fluorescence, UV-Vis spectroscopies as well as the low- and mid-level data fusion of both spectroscopies for the quantification of concentrations of roasted Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora var. robusta in coffee blends was investigated. Principal component analysis was used to reduce data multidimensionality. To calculate the level of undeclared addition, multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) models were used with lowest root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) of 3.6% and root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) of 7.9%. LDA analysis was applied to fluorescence intensities and UV spectra of Coffea arabica, canephora samples, and their mixtures in order to examine classification ability. The best performance of PCA-LDA analysis was observed for data fusion of UV and fluorescence intensity measurements at wavelength interval of 60nm. LDA showed that data fusion can achieve over 96% of correct classifications (sensitivity) in the test set and 100% of correct classifications in the training set, with low-level data fusion. The corresponding results for individual spectroscopies ranged from 90% (UV-Vis spectroscopy) to 77% (synchronous fluorescence) in the test set, and from 93% to 97% in the training set. The results demonstrate that fluorescence, UV, and visible spectroscopies complement each other, giving a complementary effect for the quantification of roasted Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora var. robusta concentration in blends.

In the years 1958-1995 in the Department of Neurosurgery in Bydgoszcz we treated operatively 160 patients (100 men and 60 women aged 5-81 yrs) with spinal tumours causing spinal cord compression. Our material was useful in estimating the evolution in diagnostic procedures, treatment and limit of contraindications to surgery. We utilized previously analyzed patients' data from the years 1958-1987 (100 patients) and compared this with results from the years 1988-1995 (60 patients). In the years 1988-1995 we operated on twice as many patients per year than in the period 1958-1987 owing to better diagnostic and operative procedures and decrease of contraindications to treatment. In about 60 percent of patients the tumours were totally and subtotally removed. In recent period we performed 10 initial procedures of transpedicular stabilization. In most cases the extensiveness of tumours did not reach the level of three spinal segments. We confirmed good early results of treatment, particularly in cases with total resection of tumours, in about half the patients with spinal neoplasm, although the most common histological diagnoses were carcinoma (89 cases). In thirty percent of cases with carcinoma only pain was diminished.
