To understand the diversity of the diatom genus Chaetoceros Ehrenberg, the C. lorenzianus complex was previously chosen as a model and three new species were described. In the present study, yet another new species, Chaetoceros pauciramosus sp. nov., was discovered from Chinese tropical waters and the temperate south-eastern Baltic Sea. In the latter locality it has been known since 2003 and identified as C. cf lorenzianus, and now found to comprise a dominating component of the autumn phytoplankton community. Vegetative cells and resting spores were examined by light and electron microscopy. The LSU and SSU of the nuclear rDNA were sequenced. The characters suggesting that C. pauciramosus belongs to C. lorenzianus complex are: 1) the vegetative cells contain four or more chloroplasts, 2) the cells have stiff setae and form regular straight chains, 3) the terminal setae differ in the direction from the intercalary setae. The relationship was well-supported by molecular phylogenetic analyses inferred from both LSU and SSU markers. The primary valve of the resting spore has two conical elevations, each with dichotomously branching processes, similar to other species in the C. lorenzianus complex. Each process forms a tree-like structure with the pointed distal tips which possess one or two thin spikes, that distinguishes C. pauciramosus from allied taxa. In the phylogenetic trees, Chaetoceros pauciramosus clustered with C. elegans, in agreement with their morphologically similar resting spores.

Cryptomonadales have acquired their plastids by secondary endosymbiosis. A novel clade-CRY1-has been discovered at the base of the Cryptomonadales tree, but it remains unknown whether it contains plastids. Cryptomonadales are also an important component of phytoplankton assemblages. However, they cannot be readily identified in fixed samples, and knowledge on dynamics and distribution of specific taxa is scarce. We investigated the phenology of the CRY1 lineage, three cryptomonadales clades and a species Proteomonas sulcata in a brackish lagoon of the Baltic Sea (salinity 0.3-3.9) using fluorescence in situ hybridization. A newly design probe revealed that specimens of the CRY1 lineage were aplastidic. This adds evidence against the chromalveolate hypothesis, and suggests that the evolution of cryptomonadales' plastids might have been shorter than is currently assumed. The CRY1 lineage was the most abundant cryptomonad clade in the lagoon. All of the studied cryptomonads peaked in spring at the most freshwater station, except for P. sulcata that peaked in summer and autumn. Salinity and concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen most significantly affected their distribution and dynamics. Our findings contribute to the ecology and evolution of cryptomonads, and may advance understanding of evolutionary relationships within the eukaryotic tree of life.

There is an increasing understanding and requirement to take into account the effects of invasive alien species (IAS) in environmental quality assessments. While IAS are listed amongst the most important factors threatening marine biodiversity, information on their impacts remains unquantified, especially for phytoplankton species. This study attempts to assess the impacts of invasive alien phytoplankton in the Baltic Sea during 1980-2008. A bioinvasion impact assessment method (BPL - biopollution level index) was applied to phytoplankton monitoring data collected from eleven sub-regions of the Baltic Sea. BPL takes into account abundance and distribution range of an alien species and the magnitude of the impact on native communities, habitats and ecosystem functioning. Of the 12 alien/cryptogenic phytoplankton species recorded in the Baltic Sea only one (the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum) was categorized as an IAS, causing a recognizable environmental effect.
