RESUMO

The cationic emulsion polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) in mixtures with methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) was studied by FTIR ATR, GC, the development of a toluene insoluble fraction of the polymer and a gravimetric analysis. The polymerization of D4 alone was also conducted for comparison and, additionally, the development of molecular weight of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) obtained in that process was studied by GPC. Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid (DBSA) was used as a surfactant and catalyst. The process was carried out in a "starved feed" mode by adding dropwise the monomer mixture to the aqueous solution of DBSA. FTIR ATR spectra were recorded by the sensor placed in the probe tip of a ReactIR 15TM apparatus. It was found that the silicone polymer formation proceeded faster when D4 was polymerized in the mixture with alkoxysilanes, especially in the beginning of the process, and that already at the beginning of the process, the partly crosslinked polymer was formed. The induction period of ca. 30 min was observed and the concentration of cyclic siloxanes (D4 and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane-D5) remained at a very low level in the course of the reaction and only traces were detected in the final product. The particle size development in the course of the reaction was also studied and it was found that the particle size distribution was bimodal and was broadening as the reaction proceeded, though this phenomenon was less distinct when D4 was polymerized in the mixtures with alkoxysilanes. The structure of the reaction product was confirmed by 29Si NMR.

RESUMO

The results of studies on the synthesis and characterization of conductive polymer composite materials designed as potential separators for lithium ion batteries are presented. The conductive polymer composites were prepared from UV-cured poly(siloxane-urethanes)s (PSURs) containing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) segments and modified with lithium salts and ionic liquids (ILs). The most encouraging results in terms of specific conductivity and mechanical properties of the composite were obtained when part of UV-curable PSUR prepolymer was replaced with a reactive UV-curable IL. Morphology of the composites modified with ILs or containing a standard ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate mixture (EC/DMC) as solvent was compared. It was found that the composites showed a two-phase structure that did not change when non-reactive ILs were applied instead of EC/DMC but was much affected when reactive UV-curable ILs were used. The selected IL-modified UV-cured PSUR composite that did not contain flammable EC/DMC solvent was preliminarily tested as gel polymer electrolyte and separator for lithium ion batteries.

RESUMO

In this paper the synthesis, characterization and application of silicone-containing aqueous polymer dispersions (APD) with hybrid particle structure are reviewed based on available literature data. Advantages of synthesis of dispersions with hybrid particle structure over blending of individual dispersions are pointed out. Three main processes leading to silicone-containing hybrid APD are identified and described in detail: (1) emulsion polymerization of organic unsaturated monomers in aqueous dispersions of silicone polymers or copolymers, (2) emulsion copolymerization of unsaturated organic monomers with alkoxysilanes or polysiloxanes with unsaturated functionality and (3) emulsion polymerization of alkoxysilanes (in particular with unsaturated functionality) and/or cyclic siloxanes in organic polymer dispersions. The effect of various factors on the properties of such hybrid APD and films as well as on hybrid particles composition and morphology is presented. It is shown that core-shell morphology where silicones constitute either the core or the shell is predominant in hybrid particles. Main applications of silicone-containing hybrid APD and related hybrid particles are reviewed including (1) coatings which show specific surface properties such as enhanced water repellency or antisoiling or antigraffiti properties due to migration of silicone to the surface, and (2) impact modifiers for thermoplastics and thermosets. Other processes in which silicone-containing particles with hybrid structure can be obtained (miniemulsion polymerization, polymerization in non-aqueous media, hybridization of organic polymer and polysiloxane, emulsion polymerization of silicone monomers in silicone polymer dispersions and physical methods) are also discussed. Prospects for further developments in the area of silicone-containing hybrid APD and related hybrid particles are presented.
