RESUMO

Self-referenced biosensing based on mode-splitting on a microring resonator is experimentally demonstrated. A Bragg grating integrated on the surface of the ring provides coupling between the clockwise and counterclockwise travelling modes of the pristine ring resonator lifting their degeneracy. The amount of mode-splitting is directly related to the reflectivity of the grating and it is only affected by structurally modifying the grating. Environmental perturbations to the surroundings of the gratings, such as temperature and bulk refractive index variations, have a minor effect on the amount of mode-splitting. This principle allows the realization of a self-referenced sensing scheme based on the detection of variations of the mode-splitting induced by structural changes to the grating. In this work, a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) Bragg grating is integrated onto a ring resonator in Al2O3. It is shown both theoretically and experimentally that the amount of splitting of a resonance varies minimally under temperature or bulk refractive index perturbations. However, the structural change of attaching a layer of biomolecules inside the grating does affect its reflectivity and the amount of mode splitting present. This result represents the first proof-of-concept demonstration of an integrated mode-splitting biosensor insensitive to temperature and refractive index variations of the liquid matrix where the molecules to be detected are embedded. The reported results pave the road towards the realization of truly self-referenced biosensors.

RESUMO

We study the onset of sustained oscillations in a classical state-dependent delay (SDD) differential equation inspired by control theory. Owing to the large delays considered, the Hopf bifurcation is singular and the oscillations rapidly acquire a sawtooth profile past the instability threshold. Using asymptotic techniques, we explicitly capture the gradual change from nearly sinusoidal to sawtooth oscillations. The dependence of the delay on the solution can be either linear or nonlinear, with at least quadratic dependence. In the former case, an asymptotic connection is made with the Rayleigh oscillator. In the latter, van der Pol's equation is derived for the small-amplitude oscillations. SDD differential equations are currently the subject of intense research in order to establish or amend general theorems valid for constant-delay differential equation, but explicit analytical construction of solutions are rare. This paper illustrates the use of singular perturbation techniques and the unusual way in which solvability conditions can arise for SDD problems with large delays.

RESUMO

We compute the short-circuit diffusion current of excitons in an organic solar cell, with special emphasis on fluorescence losses. The exciton diffusion length is not uniform but varies with its position within the device, even with moderate fluorescence quantum efficiency. With large quantum efficiencies, the rate of fluorescence can be strongly reduced with proper choices of the geometrical and dielectric parameters. Hence, through proper micro-cavity design, the diffusion length can be increased and the device performance significantly improved without recourse to triplet excitonic states.

RESUMO

In pattern-forming systems, localized patterns are states of intermediate complexity between fully extended ordered patterns and completely irregular patterns. They are formed by stationary fronts enclosing an ordered pattern inside an homogeneous background. In two dimensions, the ordered pattern is most often hexagonal and the conditions for fronts to stabilize are still unknown. In this Letter, we show how the locking of these fronts depends on their orientation relative to the pattern. The theory rests on general asymptotic arguments valid when the spatial scale of the front is slow compared to that of the hexagonal pattern. Our analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations with the Swift-Hohenberg equation, relevant to hydrodynamical and buckling instabilities, and a nonlinear optical cavity model.

RESUMO

Unmarked sensitive detection of molecules is needed in environmental pollution monitoring, disease diagnosis, security screening systems and in many other situations in which a substance must be identified. When molecules are attached or adsorbed onto an interface, detecting their presence is possible using second harmonic light generation, because at interfaces the inversion symmetry is broken. However, such light generation usually requires either dense matter or a large number of molecules combined with high-power laser sources. Here we show that using high-Q spherical microresonators and low average power, between 50 and 100 small non-fluorescent molecules deposited on the outer surface of the microresonator can generate a detectable change in the second harmonic light. This generation requires phase matching in the whispering gallery modes, which we achieved using a new procedure to periodically pattern, with nanometric precision, a molecular surface monolayer.

RESUMO

The stability of a steady-state front (kink) subject to a time-delayed feedback control (TDFC) is examined in detail. TDFC is based on the use of the difference between system variables at the current moment of time and their values at some time in the past. We first show that there exists a bifurcation to a moving front. We then investigate the limit of large delays but weak feedback and obtain a global bifurcation diagram for the propagation speed. Finally, we examine the case of a two-dimensional front with radial symmetry and determine the critical radius above which propagation is possible.

RESUMO

We analytically study the influence of boundaries on distant localized patterns generated by a Turing instability. To this end, we use the Swift-Hohenberg model with arbitrary boundary conditions. We find that the bifurcation diagram of these localized structures generally involves four homoclinic snaking branches, rather than two for infinite or periodic domains. Second, steady localized patterns only exist at discrete locations, and only at the center of the domain if their size exceeds a critical value. Third, reducing the domain size increases the pinning range.

RESUMO

We analyze the beating between intrinsic frequencies that are simultaneously generated by a modulation (Turing) instability in a nonlinear extended system. The model studied is that of a coherently driven photonic crystal fiber cavity. Beating in the form of a slow modulation of fast intensity oscillations is found to be stable for a wide range of parameters. We find that such beating can also be localized and contain only a finite number of slow modulations. These structures consist of dips in the amplitude of the fast intensity oscillations, which can either be isolated or regularly spaced. An asymptotic analysis close to the modulation instability threshold allows us to explain this phenomenon as a manifestation of homoclinic snaking for dissipative localized structures.

RESUMO

We derive asymptotically an order parameter equation in the limit where nascent bistability and long-wavelength modulation instabilities coalesce. This equation is a variant of the Swift-Hohenberg equation that generally contains nonvariational terms of the form psinabla(2)psi and /nablapsi/(2). We briefly review some of the properties already derived for this equation and derive it on three examples taken from chemical, biological, and optical contexts. Finally, we derive the equation on a general class of partial differential systems.

RESUMO

Taking up to fourth-order dispersion effects into account, we show that fiber resonators become stable for a large intensity regime. The range of pump intensities leading to modulational instability becomes finite and controllable. Moreover, by computing analytically the thresholds and frequencies of these instabilities, we demonstrate the existence of a new unstable frequency at the primary threshold. This frequency exists for an arbitrary small but nonzero fourth-order dispersion coefficient. Numerical simulations for a low and flattened dispersion photonic crystal fiber resonator confirm analytical predictions and open the way to experimental implementation.

RESUMO

We analyze stationary fronts connecting uniform and periodic states emerging from a pattern-forming instability. The size of the resulting periodic domains cannot be predicted with weakly nonlinear methods. We show that what determine this size are exponentially small (but exponentially growing in space) terms. These can only be computed by going beyond all orders of the usual multiple-scale expansion. We apply the method to the Swift-Hohenberg equation and derive analytically a snaking bifurcation curve. At each fold of this bifurcation curve, a new pair of peaks is added to the periodic domain, which can thus be seen as a bound state of localized structures. Such scenarios have been reported with optical localized structures in nonlinear cavities and localized buckling.

RESUMO

We consider a passive optical cavity containing a photonic crystal and a purely absorptive two-level medium. The cavity is driven by a superposition of two coherent beams forming a periodically modulated pump. Using a coupled mode reduction and direct numerical modeling of the full system we demonstrate the existence of bistability between uniformly periodic states, modulational instabilities and localized structures of light. All are found to exist within the conduction band of the photonic material. Moreover, contrary to similar previously found intra-band structures, we show that these localized structures can be truly stationary states.

RESUMO

The semiconductor resonator is an example of an optical system where two modulational instabilities with different wave numbers coexist. In the limit of nascent bistability, the dynamics is generically described by a nonvariational real order parameter equation, of which we give a detailed derivation. This considerably simplifies the linear and weakly nonlinear stability analyses. When the two instabilities are close together, we derive normal form equations and put special emphasis on "envelope" branches of solutions. These particular solutions may connect the two instability points or form an isola. On the basis of these rigorous results, we finally discuss the case of distant modulational instabilities, in both one and two transverse dimensions.

RESUMO

We report the observation of different localized structures coexisting for the same parameter values in an extended system. The experimental findings are carried out in a nonlinear optical interferometer and are fully confirmed by numerical simulations. The existence of each kind of localized structure is put in relation to a corresponding delocalized pattern observed. A quantitative evaluation of the range of pump parameter allowing bistability between localized structures is given. The phenomenon reported results to be robust in parameter space.

RESUMO

The interaction of two neighboring modulational instabilities in a coherently driven semiconductor cavity is investigated. First, an asymptotic reduction of the general equations is performed in the limit of a nearly vertical input-output characteristic. Next, a normal form is derived in the limit where the two instabilities are close to one other. An infinity of branches of periodic solutions are found to emerge from the unstable portion of the homogeneous branch. These branches have a nontrivial envelope in the bifurcation diagram that can either smoothly join the two instability points or form an isolated branch of solutions.

RESUMO

A significant reduction of absorption for single gamma photons has been experimentally observed by studying Mössbauer spectra of 57Fe in a FeCO3 crystal. The experimental results have been explained in terms of a quantum interference effect involving nuclear level anticrossing due to the presence of a combined magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole interaction.

RESUMO

It is shown that the adiabatic following of the dark, nonabsorbing state improves significantly the electromagnetically induced transparency performance and slows down the group velocity of the probe pulse. This concept can be used for fast selective gating of one pulse out of a pulse train.

RESUMO

We study the dynamics of an array of single mode semiconductor lasers globally but weakly coupled by a common external feedback mirror and by nearest neighbor interactions. We seek to determine the conditions under which all lasers of the array are in phase, whether in a steady, periodic, quasiperiodic, or chaotic regime, in order to maximize the output far field intensity. We show that the delay may be a useful control parameter to achieve in-phase synchronization. For the in-phase steady state, there is a competition between a delay-induced Hopf bifurcation leading to an in-phase periodic regime and a delay-independent Hopf bifurcation leading to an antiphased periodic regime. Both regimes are described analytically and secondary Hopf bifurcations to quasiperiodic solutions are found. Close to the stable steady state, the array is described by a set of Kuramoto equations for the phases of the fields. Above the first Hopf bifurcation, these equations are generalized by the addition of second and third order time derivatives of the phases.

RESUMO

Synchronization due to a weak global coupling with time delay in a semiconductor laser array is investigated both in the cw and self-pulsing regimes. A generalized form of the Kuramoto phase equations is derived and discussed analytically. The time delay is shown to induce in-phase synchronization in all dynamical regimes. Another form of synchronization is found which leads to local extinction of self-pulsing in the array.
