RESUMO

We report the first confirmation of the predicted inversion between the pi2p3/2 and pi1f5/2 nuclear states in the nu(g)9/2 midshell. This was achieved at the ISOLDE facility, by using a combination of in-source laser spectroscopy and collinear laser spectroscopy on the ground states of 71,73,75Cu, which measured the nuclear spin and magnetic moments. The obtained values are mu(71Cu)=+2.2747(8)mu(N), mu(73Cu)=+1.7426(8)mu(N), and mu(75Cu)=+1.0062(13)mu(N) corresponding to spins I=3/2 for 71,73Cu and I=5/2 for 75Cu. The results are in fair agreement with large-scale shell-model calculations.

RESUMO

The N = 28 shell closure has been investigated via the 46Ar(d,p)47Ar transfer reaction in inverse kinematics. Energies and spectroscopic factors of the neutron p(3/2), p(1/2), and f(5/2) states in 47Ar were determined and compared to those of the 49Ca isotone. We deduced a reduction of the N = 28 gap by 330(90) keV and spin-orbit weakenings of approximately 10(2) and 45(10)% for the f and p states, respectively. Such large variations for the f and p spin-orbit splittings could be accounted for by the proton-neutron tensor force and by the density dependence of the spin-orbit interaction, respectively. This contrasts with the picture of the spin-orbit interaction as a surface term only.

RESUMO

Nuclei with magic numbers serve as important benchmarks in nuclear theory. In addition, neutron-rich nuclei play an important role in the astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process (r process). 78Ni is the only doubly magic nucleus that is also an important waiting point in the r process, and serves as a major bottleneck in the synthesis of heavier elements. The half-life of 78Ni has been experimentally deduced for the first time at the Coupled Cyclotron Facility of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University, and was found to be 110(+100)(-60) ms. In the same experiment, a first half-life was deduced for 77Ni of 128(+27)(-33) ms, and more precise half-lives were deduced for 75Ni and 76Ni of 344(+20)(-24) ms and 238(+15)(-18) ms, respectively.

RESUMO

First beta- and gamma-spectroscopic decay studies of the N=82 r-process "waiting-point" nuclide 130Cd have been performed at CERN/ISOLDE using the highest achievable isotopic selectivity. Several nuclear-physics surprises have been discovered. The first one is the unanticipatedly high energy of 2.12 MeV for the [pi g(9/2) multiply sign in circle nu g(7/2)] 1(+) level in 130In, which is fed by the main Gamow-Teller transition. The second surprise is the rather high Q(beta) value of 8.34 MeV, which is in agreement only with recent mass models that include the phenomenon of N=82 shell quenching. Possible implications of these new results on the formation of the A approximately 130 r-process abundance peak are presented.

RESUMO

The excitation function of the reaction (22)Ne(alpha,n)(25)Mg, the key neutron source in the astrophysical s process in massive stars, has been determined from threshold at E(alpha) = 570 up to 1450 keV with an experimental sensitivity of 10(-11) b. For all resonances in this energy range new resonance parameters have been measured. For a possible resonance at about 635 keV a new upper limit omega gamma < 60 neV for the strength was obtained. Based on the new data, improved reaction rates were calculated as a function of temperature. The new uncertainty limits are considerably smaller than in previous determinations, ruling out the large enhancement factors, up to 500, assumed in some stellar model calculations.

RESUMO

The recent monitoring of drug residues in the aquatic environment has gained much interest as many pharmaceutical compounds can frequently be found in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents and river water at concentrations up to several microgram/l. This article describes the analysis of various water samples for 18 antibiotic substances, from the classes of macrolid antibiotics, sulfonamides, penicillins and tetracyclines. Samples were preconcentrated via lyophilization and quantified using HPLC-electrospray-tandem-mass spectrometry. The investigated STP effluents and surface water samples showed frequent appearance of an erythromycin degradation product, roxithromycin and sulfamethoxazole with concentrations up to 6 micrograms/l. Neither tetracyclines nor penicillins could be detected at concentration levels above 50 and 20 ng/l, respectively. From the large number of ground water samples that were taken from agricultural areas in Germany, no contamination by antibiotics was detected except for two sites. This indicates that intake from veterinary applications to the aquatic environment is of minor importance.

RESUMO

For the determination of 18 antibiotics in water samples down to the lower ng/l range, an analytical multi method is presented. The analytes belong to different groups of antibiotics such as penicillins, tetracyclines, sulfonamides and macrolid antibiotics. Samples were enriched using a universal freeze-drying procedure or a solid-phase extraction facultatively. Analysis was performed by liquid chromatography with electrospray-tandem MS detection. Chromatography required different columns and eluents. Mean recovery rates were in excess of 70%, however, with one exception and a quantitation limit of 50 ng/l for the tetracyclines and 20 ng/l for all other antibiotics were set.

RESUMO

The nickelsulfide fire assay (docimasy) for the enrichment of platinum-group elements (PGEs) has been modified for the use with small samples and combined with instrumental neutron-activation analysis (INAA). This procedure has been applied to the determination of PGEs exhausted from catalytic converters and deposited in soil near the Wiesbadener Kreuz (highway A3, Frankfurt-Köln). Our results show a considerable enhancement of the Pt (up to 330 ng/g), Pd (6.6 ng/g) and Rh (7.5 ng/g) contents close to the highway.

RESUMO

Neutron activation analysis (NAA) has been used as detection technique for adsorbable organic fluorine in aqueous samples. The results have been compared with the standardized DIN method which uses a fluoride-ion-selective electrode (ISE).

RESUMO

One of the major drawbacks of cryorefractive surgery is the delay in the postoperative recovery of corneal clarity. The authors have hypothesized that this delay is due to the death of graft keratocytes caused by the freezing process, and the need for subsequent repopulation by host keratocytes to restore corneal clarity. By using a slow, controlled-rate freeze on a modified Barraquer cryolathe, the authors are able to maintain keratocyte viability in the graft corneal tissue, as assessed by standard histologic methods and by collagenase digestion. Maintenance of keratocyte viability results in the rapid return of corneal clarity following lamellar keratoplasty in the rabbit, with few of the histopathologic changes seen following standard rapid freezing of corneal tissue.
