RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Journal of Infection and Public Health published its first issue in 2008. The fact that the journal has been published uninterruptedly as well as its editorial content and the application of a peer-review process to select manuscripts, made the journal eligible to be indexed by databases such as Scopus. This study presents a general overview of the journal from 2008 until 2016 using bibliometric indicators to assess its performance. METHODS: The data for this study, dating between 2008 and 2016, was extracted from Scopus database. All the information was exported in CSV format to the Sequel Pro software for data analysis. Additionally, collaboration and word co-occurrence networks were generated using VOSviewer. RESULTS: The total number of documents published between 2008-2016 was 586, of which local authorship (Saudi Arabia) constituted a small share, accounting only for 19.3% (113 documents). Those with foreign authorship (other countries excluding Saudi Arabia) represented 80.7% (473) of the total. Furthermore, the three countries that co-author documents with researchers from Saudi Arabia are Egypt, the United States and the United Kingdom. Likewise, these three countries serve as nodes connecting researchers from other countries located in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. An analysis of the top-five journals that cited the research published revealed that that 90.2% of them belonged to the first and second quartiles confirms the quality of the research being published. Word co-occurrence analysis established a slight shift of focus in the research topics published during the last four years studied, as a new cluster was formed with terms related to "education", "intervention" and "implementation". CONCLUSION: The journal has managed, in very few years, to be considered by researchers worldwide. Furthermore, throughout the years, the journal showed an evolution in the main topics covered, providing a contemporary overview of public health.

RESUMO

Environmental stress factors such as salt, drought and heat are known to affect plant productivity. However, high salinity is spreading throughout the world, currently affecting more than 45 millionha. One of the mechanisms that allow plants to withstand salt stress consists on vacuolar sequestration of Na(+), through a Na(+)/H(+) antiporter. We isolated a new vacuolar Na(+)/H(+) antiporter from Eucalyptus globulus from a cDNA library. The cDNA had a 1626 bp open reading frame encoding a predicted protein of 542 amino acids with a deduced molecular weight of 59.1 KDa. Phylogenetic and bioinformatic analyses indicated that EgNHX1 localized in the vacuole. To assess its role in Na(+) exchange, we performed complementation studies using the Na(+) sensitive yeast mutant strain Δnhx1. The results showed that EgNHX1 partially restored the salt sensitive phenotype of the yeast Δnhx1 strain. However, its overexpression in transgenic Arabidopsis confers tolerance in the presence of increasing NaCl concentrations while the wild type plants exhibited growth retardation. Expression profiles of Eucalyptus seedlings subjected to salt, drought, heat and ABA treatment were established. The results revealed that Egnhx1 was induced significantly only by drought. Together, these results suggest that the product of Egnhx1 from E. globulus is a functional vacuolar Na(+)/H(+) antiporter.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the articles published in Chile during 1987-2006 that were categorized into the Plant Science discipline by ISI. The data was extracted from the Web of Science datábase, obtaining a total of 911 articles for analysis. Almost half of the articles were the outcome of an international collaboration, the United States being the country with more collaborative links with Chile within this discipline. A list was made with the 10 most-cited articles and 10 most frequently used journals. The analysis showed that almost 50% of the articles were concentrated in 10 different journals. The number of articles produced each year revealed a steady growth in scientific production since 1987. This is probably related to the progressive interaction between industry and public-research institutions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: During the last decade Revista Médica de Chile increased its visibility, measured on citations and impact factor. AIM: To perform a scientometric analysis to assess the performance of Revista Médica de Chile. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thomson's-ISI Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports QCR) were consulted for performance indicators of Revista Médica de Chile and Latin American journals whose subject is General and Internal Medicine. We also report the h-index of the journal, which infers quality linked to the quantity of the output. RESULTS: According to the h-index, Revista Médica de Chile ranks 4 among the 36 journals indexed and published by Argentina, Brazil, Chile and México. The top ten articles published by Revista Médica de Chile and the institutions with the higher contribution to the journal, were identified using citations. In the Latin American region, Brazil relevantly increased its scientific output. However, Argentina, Chile and México maintain a plateau during the last decade. CONCLUSIONS: Revista Médica de Chile increased notoriously its performance. Its contribution to the Chilean scientific community dedicated to Medicine appears to be of central value.
