[Tumor metastasis to the eyeball]. / Przerzuty raka do galki ocznej.

Clinical observations of 7 patients with metastatic intraocular tumors are presented. The primary sites of neoplasms were breast cancer in 4 women, pulmonary cancer in 2 men and in 1 cancer of prostate. In 4 patients metastases were observed also in the anterior segment of uveal tract. Secondary retinal detachment was found in 6 cases, central retinal artery occlusion in one and ciliary artery occlusion in another one. In spite of radio--and chemotherapy 5 patients died during 1-9 months and 2 remained under clinical observation.

[Obliteration of vessels growing into the cornea with the help of laser energy]. / Zamkniecie naczyn wrastajacych w rogówke za pomoca energii laserowej.

The vessels proliferating into cornea cause epithelium biotransformation and lipid keratopathy, decreasing corneal transparency. In 9 patients (10 eyes) argon laser obliteration of these vessels was performed. In 8 eyes improvement of corneal transparency and visual acuity was achieved, in other two the neovascularization was restrained. The best results were observed in lipid keratopathy.

[Ocular symptoms in internal carotid artery occlusion]. / Objawy oczne w niedroznosci tetnicy szyjnej wewnetrznej.

The internal carotid artery occlusion causing an insufficiency of the cerebral circulation manifests itself--besides the neurological symptoms--by disorders of the visual organ. One can distinguish among them early, functional symptoms in the form of transient unilateral hemianopia on the side opposite to the occluded carotid artery and the attacks of transient amblyopia. Signs of fixed ischaemia of the eye ball appear afterwards in the form of oculomotor and pupillary disturbances, neovascularization of the iris, disturbances of the IOP, central retinal artery occlusion, ischaemic optic atrophy. The authors emphasize the value of Doppler's diagnostic ultrasonography, a fast and non-invasive method of direct evaluation of the blood flow in the internal carotid artery system.

[Stickler's syndrome]. / Zespól Sticklera.

Stickler's syndrome or congenital, progressive arthro-ophthalmopathy refers to disturbances of the connective tissue of the organism but mainly the osteoarticular and visual systems. In the visual system one discovers a congenital high myopia, pathological changes in the vitreous in the form of membranes and proliferative bands as well as retinal detachment. A metabolic defect concerning the hyaluronic acid and the collagen of the 2-d type is assumed to be the cause of this syndrome.

[Laser coagulation of the iris surface with neovascularization in glaucoma]. / Laserokoagulacja powierzchni teczówki w jaskrze z nowotwórstwem naczyn.

Photocoagulation of the iris surface in the course of rubeosis iridis was performed in 11 patients (12 eyes) with secondary absolute glaucoma. The intraocular pressure was lowered down to 30-35 mm Hg in 8 eyes, in the remaining 4 eyes it oscillated between 45 and 50 mm Hg. The pain receded in all the cases. One considers the possibility that in the disappearance of pain--besides the lowering of the IOP--a substantial factor was the lesion of the innervation of the iris.

[Our results of laser trabeculoplasty in simple glaucoma]. / Wyniki wlasne trabekuloplastyki laserowej w jaskrze prostej.

In 24 patients with simple glaucoma in whom the IOP did not normalize under the conservative treatment the authors checked--between others--the Po, the outflow coefficient (C) and calculated Po/C. Laser trabeculoplasty was performed subsequently. The enumerated indexes were examined the day after surgery, then after the 1-st and 2-nd week, after a month and 2 months. In the majority of cases the coefficient C showed an improvement and normalization of the IOP distinctly seen till the 1-st month after operation. In subsequent observations 5 persons showed a renewed deterioration of the hydrodynamic conditions and the intervention was repeated leading to an improvement in 3 cases. In consideration of the lack of normalization of the IOP in 2 persons it was necessary to subject them to a surgical procedure.

[Effects of petroleum derivatives and psychological stress on eye changes in prospective studies]. / Wplyw pochodnych ropy naftowej i stresu psychicznego na zmiany w narzadzie wzroku w badaniach prospektywnych.

Prospective study of workers exposed to simultaneous action of petroleum derivatives and psychic stress proved statistically remarkable differences between the first study and control study (after two years) as related to macular degeneration and opacification of the lens. So far, the results do not seem to point to these phenomena as related to the differences of age and training period between the two groups. For the ultimate assessment of the effect of simultaneous intoxication with petroleum derivatives and psychic stress, it is necessary to confront the results of the study with those obtained after examining the control group including persons of the same age.

[Evaluation of the organ of sight in workers at the Masovian Refinery-Petrochemistry Plant. II. Correlation of the results of ophthalmological tests with the results of specialized and laboratory tests]. / Ocena stanu narzadu wzroku pracowników MZRiP. II. Korelacja wyników badan okulistycznych z wynikami innych badan specjalistycznych i laboratoryjnych.

Basing on the results of examinations of 752 workers of the Refinery-Petro-chemistry Plant, correlations have been searched for between changes in the macula region of retina and disturbances found due to other specialist tests (internal, laryngological, dermatological), as well as laboratory--and toxicological investigations. A statistically significant correlation was found between changes in the macula and dysgeusia at the water-sewage division as well as the level of triglycerides at the phenol-and-total cholesterol division. A strict correlation was found between an increase in arterial hypertension and the rate of macula changes.

[The state of the organ of vision in workers in the petrochemical industry. I. Results of ophthalmological examinations]. / Ocena stanu narzadu wzroku pracowników petrochemii. I. Wyniki badan okulistycznych.

The ophthalmological examinations of petrochemical plant workers that have been carried out so far did not enable working out a simple method of rapid ophthalmological evaluation of subclinical aromatic hydrocarbons poisonings. Neither the results of our own studies nor the experience of other authors explained fully the pathogenesis of the described spot lesions. Further observations are advisable to account for that issue.

51Cr-bleomycin in the diagnosis of ocular melanoma.

51Cr-bleomycin was administered to 18 patients suspected of having an ocular melanoma with varying degree of development. The diagnosis was verified prior to surgical removal of the eye-ball by fluorescent angiography and computerized axial tomography. In operated patients histological diagnosis was also available. Scintigraphy after 51Cr-bleomycin administration appeared to be an effective diagnostic measure: sensitivity and specificity reached 90 and 87%, respectively. It is concluded that the method is useful in the preoperative diagnosis of ocular melanoma.
