RESUMO

Polymer biocompositions of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) and linear polyurethanes (PU) with aromatic rings were produced by melt-blending at different P3HB/PU weight ratios (100/0, 95/5, 90/10, and 85/15). Polyurethanes have been prepared with 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and polyethylene glycols with molar masses of 400 g/mol (PU400), 1000g/mol (PU1000), and 1500 g/mol (PU1500). The compatibility and morphology of the obtained polymer blends were determined by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of the polyurethane content in the biocompositions on their thermal stability and mechanical properties was investigated and compared with those of the native P3HB. It was shown that increasing the PU content in P3HB-PU compositions to 10 wt.% leads to an improvement in the mentioned properties. The obtained results demonstrated that the thermal stability and mechanical properties of P3HB were improved, particularly in terms of increasing the degradation temperature, reducing hardness, and increasing impact strength. The best thermal and mechanical properties were shown by the P3HB-PU polymer compositions containing 10 wt.% of polyurethane modifiers, especially PU1000, which was also confirmed by the morphology analysis of these biocompositions. The presence of polyurethanes in the resulting polymer biocomposites decreases their glass transition temperatures, i.e., makes the materials more flexible. The resulting polymer biocompositions have suitable mechanical properties and thermal properties within the processing conditions for the predicted application as biodegradable, short-lived products for agriculture.

Due to the growing interest in biopolymers, biosynthesizable and biodegradable polymers currently occupy a special place. Unfortunately, the properties of native biopolymers make them not good enough for use as substitutes for conventional polymers. Therefore, attempts are being made to modify their properties. In this work, in order to improve the properties of the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) biopolymer, linear aliphatic polyurethane (PU) based on 1,4-butanediol (BD) and hexamethylene 1,6-diisocyanate (HDI) was used. The conducted studies on the effect of the amount of PU used (5, 10, 15 and 20 m/m%) showed an improvement in the thermal properties of the prepared polymer blends. As part of the tested mechanical properties of the new polymer blends, we noted the desired increase in the tensile strength, and the impact strength showed a decrease in hardness, in particular at the presence of 5 m/m% PU. Therefore, for further improvement, hybrid nanobiocomposites with 5 m/m% PU and organically modified montmorillonite (MMT) (Cloisite 30®B) were produced. The nanoadditive was used in a typical amount of 1-3 m/m%. It was found that the obtained nanobiocomposites containing the smallest amount of nanofillers, i.e., 1 m/m% Cloisite®30B, exhibited the best mechanical and thermal properties.

Previous research on the effects of body mass on the pelvic girdle focused mostly on adult females and males. Because the ontogenetic plasticity level in the pelvis remains largely unknown, this study investigated how the association between body mass index (BMI) and pelvic shape changes during development. It also assessed how the large variation in pelvic shape could be explained by the number of live births in females. Data included CT scans of 308 humans from infancy to late adulthood with known age, sex, body mass, body stature, and the number of live births (for adult females). 3D reconstruction and geometric morphometrics was used to analyze pelvic shape. Multivariate regression showed a significant association between BMI and pelvic shape in young females and old males. The association between the number of live births and pelvic shape in females was not significant. Less plasticity in pelvic shape in adult females than during puberty, perhaps reflects adaptation to support the abdominopelvic organs and the fetus during pregnancy. Non-significant susceptibility to BMI in young males may reflect bone maturation accelerated by excessive body mass. Hormonal secretion and biomechanical loading associated with pregnancy may not have a long-term effect on the pelvic morphology of females.

The polymeric cytisine-enriched fibers based on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) were obtained using electrospinning method. The biocompatibility study, advanced thermal analysis and release of cytisine from the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) fibers were carried out. The nanofibers' morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The formation and description of phases during the thermal processes of fibers by the advanced thermal analysis were examined. The new quantitative thermal analysis of polymeric fibers with cytisine phases based on vibrational, solid and liquid heat capacities was presented. The apparent heat capacity of fibers was measured using the standard differential scanning calorimetry. The quantitative analysis allowed for the study of the glass transition and melting/crystallization process. The mobile amorphous fraction, degree of crystallinity and rigid amorphous fraction were determined depending on the thermal history of semicrystalline polymeric fibers. Furthermore, the cytisine dissolution behaviour was studied. It was observed that the kinetic of the release from polymeric nanofiber is delayed than for the marketed product. The immunosafety of the tested polymeric nanofibers with cytisine was confirmed by the Food and Drug Agency Guidance as well as the European Medicines Agency. The polymeric matrix with cytisine seems to be a promising candidate for the prolonged release formulation.

While rosacea is a common dermatologic condition, ocular rosacea is sometimes evident either with cutaneous rosacea or occasionally by itself. Manifesting with such varied symptoms as dry eye, Meibomian gland dysfunction, and corneal erosion, ocular rosacea can be confused with a multitude of other diseases. While ocular rosacea is commonly mild and rarely severe, physicians should still expand their examination to include ocular manifestations of rosacea. In addition, we propose diagnostic criteria for ocular rosacea, stressing the importance of early recognition and treatment.

The growing phenomenon of honey adulteration prompts the search for simple methods to confirm the authenticity of honey. The aim of the study was to evaluate the changes in thermal characteristics, physicochemical parameters, antioxidant and enzymatic activity of honey subjected to artificial adulteration. Two series of products were prepared with the use of two different sugar syrups with an increasing dosage of adulterant (0 to 30%). After 24 months of storage, the quality of adulterated samples (partially crystallized) was assessed in comparison to the control honey (solid). Used adulteration changed physicochemical parameters and reduced antioxidant and enzymatic activity of honey (p < 0.05). The admixture of syrup and invert (p < 0.05) reduced the viscosity of liquid phase of delaminated honey in a dose-dependent manner. In the study, artificially adulterated honeys were controlled using the standard differential scanning calorimetry, DSC. In all adulterated honeys, a specific glass transition, TG, was observed in the range of 34-38.05 °C, which was not observed for control honey and pure adulterants. Moreover, the additional Tgs were observed in a wide range from -19.5 °C to 4.10 °C for honeys adulterated by syrup only. In turn, the Tg in range of 50.4-57.6 °C was observed only for the honeys adulterated by invert. These specific Tg seem to be useful to detect honey adulteration and to identify the kind of adulterant used.

The characterization of cytisine (CYT) and its blends with poly(lactic acid) was performed using thermal analysis, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffractometry. The heat capacities, total enthalpy, and phase transitions of CYT were established from 1.8 to 448.15 K (-271.35 - 175 °C) by advanced thermal analysis. Data were obtained using a Quantum Design Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) and a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The low-temperature heat capacity of the crystalline CYT in the range of 1.8 to 300 K (-271.35 - 26.86 °C) was measured by PPMS and fitted to a theoretical model in the low temperature region below 11 K (-262.15 °C), to orthogonal polynomials in the middle range 5 K < T < 60 K (-268.15 °C < t < -213.15 °C) and to the Debye and Einstein functions in the high range of temperature above 60 K (-213.15 °C). The liquid heat capacity was calculated based on the approximated linear regression data above the molten state of the experimental heat capacity of CYT obtained by the standard DSC measurements, and it was expressed as Cpliquid = 0.0838T + 346.78 J·K-1·mol-1. The calculated heat capacity in the solid state was extended to a higher temperature and was used, together with liquid heat capacity, as the reference baselines for the advanced thermal analysis of CYT. The PPMS and DSC/TMDSC methods are complementary methods for thermal analysis of cytisine. The PPMS method allowed determination of the equilibrium heat capacity in the solid state, which together with the equilibrium heat capacity in the liquid state allowed to analyze of the experimental apparent heat capacity of cytisine obtained based on DSC. The melting temperature and the total heat of fusion of crystalline material were established as 431.8 K (158.65 °C) and 26.5 kJ·mol-1, respectively. The solid and liquid heat capacities and transition parameters of CYT were applied to calculate total enthalpies for fully amorphous and crystalline states. Analyses of DSC and X-ray confirmed the presence of the solid-solid transition linking with not so far described a polymorphism phenomenon of CYT. Based on the thermogravimetric analysis the temperature of degradation of CYT was determined as 460.5 K (187.35 °C). Also, a preliminary thermal analysis of the blends of cytisine and poly(lactic acid) as a new candidate for drug delivery system was presented.

This paper presents an attempt to improve the properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) using linear aliphatic polyurethane (PU400) and organomodified montmorillonite (MMT)-(Cloisite®30B). The nanostructure of hybrid nanobiocomposites produced by extrusion was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, and the morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. In addition, selected mechanical properties and thermal properties were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, TGA, and differential scanning calorimetry, DSC. The interactions of the composite ingredients were indicated by FT IR spectroscopy. The effect of the amount of nanofiller on the properties of prepared hybrid nanobiocomposites was noted. Moreover, the non-equilibrium and equilibrium thermal parameters of nanobiocomposites were established based on their thermal history. Based on equilibrium parameters (i.e., the heat of fusion for the fully crystalline materials and the change in the heat capacity at the glass transition temperature for the fully amorphous nanobiocomposites), the degree of crystallinity and the mobile and rigid amorphous fractions were estimated. The addition of Cloisite®30B and aliphatic polyurethane to the P3HB matrix caused a decrease in the degree of crystallinity in reference to the unfilled P3HB. Simultaneously, an increase in the amorphous phase contents was noted. A rigid amorphous fraction was also denoted. Thermogravimetric analysis of the nanocomposites was also carried out and showed that the thermal stability of all nanocomposites was higher than that of the unfilled P3HB. An additional 1% mass of nanofiller increased the degradation temperature of the nanocomposites by about 30 °C in reference to the unfilled P3HB. Moreover, it was found that obtained hybrid nanobiocomposites containing 10 wt.% of aliphatic polyurethane (PU400) and the smallest amount of nanofiller (1 wt.% of Cloisite®30B) showed the best mechanical properties. We observed a desirable decrease in hardness of 15%, an increase in the relative strain at break of 60% and in the impact strength of 15% of the newly prepared nanobiocomposites with respect to the unfiled P3HB. The produced hybrid nanobiocomposites combined the best features induced by the plasticizing effect of polyurethane and the formation of P3HB-montmorillonite-polyurethane (P3HB-PU-MMT) adducts, which resulted in the improvement of the thermal and mechanical properties.

The frontal sinuses are cavities inside the frontal bone located at the junction between the face and the cranial vault and close to the brain. Despite a long history of study, understanding of their origin and variation through evolution is limited. This work compares most hominin species' holotypes and other key individuals with extant hominids. It provides a unique and valuable perspective of the variation in sinuses position, shape, and dimensions based on a simple and reproducible methodology. We also observed a covariation between the size and shape of the sinuses and the underlying frontal lobes in hominin species from at least the appearance of Homo erectus. Our results additionally undermine hypotheses stating that hominin frontal sinuses were directly affected by biomechanical constraints resulting from either chewing or adaptation to climate. Last, we demonstrate their substantial potential for discussions of the evolutionary relationships between hominin species.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is an optic neuropathy characterized by irreversible retinal ganglion cell damage and visual field loss. The global POAG prevalence is estimated to be 3.05%, and near term is expected to significantly rise, especially within aging Asian populations. Primary angle-closure glaucoma disproportionately affects Asians, with up to four times greater prevalence of normal-tension glaucoma reported compared with high-tension glaucoma. Estimates for overall POAG prevalence in Asian populations vary, with Chinese and Indian populations representing the majority of future cases. Structural characteristics associated with glaucoma progression including the optic nerve head, retina, and cornea are distinct in Asians, serving as intermediates between African and European descent populations. Patterns in IOP suggest some similarities between races, with a significant inverse relationship between age and IOP only in Asian populations. Genetic differences have been suggested to play a role in these differences, however, a clear genetic pattern is yet to be established. POAG pathogenesis differs between Asians and other ethnicities, and it may differ within the broad classification of the Asian race. Greater awareness and further research are needed to improve treatment plans and outcomes for the increasingly high prevalence of normal tension glaucoma within aging Asian populations.

The thermal behaviour of crystalline and amorphous carvedilol (CAR) phases was studied by advanced thermal analysis using Quantum Design Physical Property Measurement System and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Theoretical functions describing crystalline carvedilol heat capacity at low temperatures and the Debye-Einstein function for high temperatures were obtained. Based on the experimental heat capacity values, solid and liquid baselines were established, and the state functions (H, S, G) for solid and liquid states were calculated. A comprehensive characterization of melting and glass transition processes was obtained. CAR is easily amorphizable by cooling the liquid. The residual entropy, which quantifies the extent of frozen-in disorder in the amorphous solid, for glassy CAR was estimated as 51 J·mol-1·K-1. The Kauzmann temperature (TK) was estimated based on enthalpy and entropy. Molecular motions in the amorphous phase were also studied. The activation energy for structural relaxation (Ea = 539 kJ·mol-1) and fragility parameter (m = 91) were obtained from the non-isothermal physical ageing. The isothermal physical ageing kinetics of amorphous CAR was studied by applying Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) model. The mean molecular relaxation time constant (τKWW = 117 min) and relaxation constant (ßKWW = 0.33) were obtained. CAR was classified as a fragile glass-former. Furthermore, τKWW constant for samples aged at 303.15 K is very low, thus, the physical ageing will occur during the short- and long-term storage of amorphous CAR, potentially changing its physicochemical properties during the ageing process. However, the results of molecular mobility studies (high molecular motions) show that the relationship between molecular motions in a glassy solid and its tendency to crystallization does not seem to follow an expected pattern, i.e., no crystallization occurred by thermal treatment of glassy, supercooled liquid and liquid phases of CAR as one would expect. Modern calorimetry and quantitative thermal analysis provided the fundamental kinetic and thermodynamic information about the crystalline and amorphous states of CAR.

Gigantism and acromegaly have been observed in past populations; however, analyses usually focus on the morphological features of the post-cranial skeleton. The aim of this study is to characterize the internal anatomical features of the skull (brain endocast anatomy and asymmetry, frontal pneumatization, cranial thickness, sella turcica size) of an adult individual from the 11-14th centuries with these two diseases, in comparison with non-pathological individuals from the same population. The material consisted of 33 adult skulls from a mediaeval population, one of them belonging to an adult female with endocrine disorders (OL-23/77). Based on the CT scans, the internal cranial anatomy was analysed. The sella turcica of OL-23/77 is much larger than in the comparative sample. The endocast of the individual OL-23/77 shows a left frontal/left occipital petalia, while the comparative population mostly had right frontal/left occipital petalias. The asymmetry in petalia location in OL-23/77 comes within the range of variation observed in the comparative population. The individual has high values for cranial thickness. The frontal sinuses of the specimen analysed are similar in size and shape to the comparative sample only for data scaled to the skull length. Enlarged sella turcica is typical for individuals with acromegaly/gigantism. The pattern of the left frontal/left occipital petalia in the specimen OL-23/77 is quite rare. The position of the endocranial petalias has not influenced the degree of asymmetry in the specimen. Despite the large bone thickness values, skull of OL-23/77 does not show any abnormal features. The skull/endocast relationship in this individual shows some peculiarities in relation to its large size, while other internal anatomical features are within the normal range of variation of the comparative sample.

Variations in the cross-sectional properties of long bones are used to reconstruct the activity of human groups and differences in their respective habitual behaviors. Knowledge of what factors influence bone structure in Homo sapiens and Neandertals is still insufficient thus, this study investigated which biological and environmental variables influence variations in the femoral robusticity indicator of these two species. The sample consisted of 13 adult Neandertals from the Middle Paleolithic and 1959 adult individuals of H. sapiens ranging chronologically from the Upper Paleolithic to recent times. The femoral biomechanical properties were derived from the European data set, the subject literature, and new CT scans. The material was tested using a Mantel test and statistical models. In the models, the polar moment of area (J) was the dependent variable; sex, age, chronological period, type of lifestyle, percentage of the cortical area (%CA), the ratio of second moment areas of inertia about the X and Y axes (Ix/Iy), and maximum slope of the terrain were independent covariates. The Mantel tests revealed spatial autocorrelation of the femoral index in H. sapiens but not in Neandertals. A generalized additive mixed model showed that sex, %CA, Ix/Iy, chronological period, and terrain significantly influenced variation in the robusticity indicator of H. sapiens femora. A linear mixed model revealed that none of the analyzed variables correlated with the femoral robusticity indicator of Neandertals. We did not confirm that the gradual decline in the femoral robusticity indicator of H. sapiens from the Middle Paleolithic to recent times is related to the type of lifestyle; however, it may be associated with lower levels of mechanical loading during adolescence. The lack of correlation between the analysed variables and the indicator of femoral robusticity in Neandertals may suggest that they needed a different level of mechanical stimulus to produce a morphological response in the long bone than H. sapiens.

Hexokinase 2 (HK2), an enzyme of the sugar kinase family, plays a dual role in glucose metabolism and mediating cancer cell apoptosis, making it an attractive target for cancer therapy. While positive HK2 expression usually promotes cancer cells survival, silencing or inhibiting this enzyme has been found to improve the effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs and even result in cancer cell death. Previously, benitrobenrazide (BNBZ) was characterized as a potent HK2 inhibitor with good anti-cancer activity in mice, but the effect of its trihydroxy moiety (pyrogallol-like) on inhibitory activity and some cellular functions has not been fully understood. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to obtain the parent BNBZ (2a) and its three dihydroxy derivatives 2b-2d and to conduct additional physicochemical and biological investigations. The research hypothesis assumed that the HK2 inhibitory activity of the tested compounds depends on the number and location of hydroxyl groups in their chemical structure. Among many studies, the binding affinity to HK2 was determined and two human liver cancer cell lines, HepG2 and HUH7, were used and exposed to chemicals at various times: 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. The study showed that the modifications to the structures of the new BNBZ derivatives led to significant changes in their activities. It was also found that these compounds tend to aggregate and exhibit toxic effects. They were found to contribute to: (a) DNA damage, (b) increased ROS production, and (c) disruption of cell cycle progression. It was observed that, HepG2, occurred much more sensitive to the tested chemicals than the HUH7 cells; However, regardless of the used cell line it seems that the increase in the expression of HK2 in cancer cells compared to normal cells which have HK2 at a very low level, is a serious obstacle in anti-cancer therapy and efforts to find the effective inhibitors of this enzyme should be intensified.

Although the marked convexity of the frontal bone and retraction of the facial skeleton under the anterior part of the cranial base are commonly regarded as traits significantly influencing the gracilisation of the supraorbital region (a decrease in the degree of robusticity) in the Homo sapiens crania, identification of which of these two traits is more important for this phenomenon has not yet been investigated. Thus, the main aim of this study is to establish whether the frontal inclination angle (reflecting the mid-sagittal shape of the frontal bone) or the facial retraction angle (describing the grade of facial retraction) is more strongly related to the degree of gracilisation in the supraorbital region in a large sample of geographically diverse modern adult human crania (n = 250). Earlier studies based on small modern Homo sapiens cranial samples (derived from one population) demonstrated a lack of a relationship between the facial angle (reflecting the prognathism of the lower face) and the supraorbital region's expression. In this study, we also investigated whether there was no relationship between these traits in the analysed large modern human cranial sample. Spearman's rank correlations and models concerning partial rank correlations (including traits such as sex, geographic origin, size of the facial skeleton and size of the neurocranium to eliminate their influence on the examined relationships) were used. The results indicate a stronger relationship of the degree of gracilisation in the supraorbital region with the frontal inclination angle than with the angle of facial retraction (without the influence of the other considered factors). No significant relationship between supraorbital region expression and prognathism was established. The importance of the obtained results was discussed, including the evolutionary perspective and the occurrence of significant interpopulation differences in the gracilisation of the supraorbital region in modern humans.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) is the most important of the polyhydroxyalkanoates. It is biosynthesized, biodegradable, biocompatible, and shows no cytotoxicity and mutagenicity. P3HB is a natural metabolite in the human body and, therefore, it could replace the synthetic, hard-to-degrade polymers used in the production of implants. However, P3HB is a brittle material with limited thermal stability. Therefore, in order to improve its mechanical properties and processing parameters by separating its melting point and degradation temperature, P3HB-based composites can be produced using, for example, linear aliphatic polyurethanes as modifiers. The aim of the study is a modification of P3HB properties with the use of linear aliphatic polyurethanes synthesized in reaction of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and polypropylene glycols (PPG) by producing their composites. Prepared biocomposites were tested by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA). Furthermore, selected mechanical properties were evaluated. It has been confirmed that new biocomposites showed an increase in impact strength, relative strain at break, decrease of hardness and higher degradation temperature compared to the unfilled P3HB. The biocomposites also showed a decrease in the glass transition temperature and the degree of crystallinity. Biocomposites obtained with 10 wt. % polyurethane synthesized with polypropylene glycol having 1000 g ⋅ mole-1 and HDI have the best thermal and mechanical properties.

PURPOSE: Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) is a biopolymer, but storing products from P3HB causes the deterioration of their properties leading to their brittleness. P3HB has also low thermal stability. Its melting point almost equals its degradation temperature. To obtain biodegradable and biocompatible materials characterized by higher thermal stability and better strength parameters than the unfilled P3HB, composites with the addition of polyurethanes were produced. METHODS: The morphology, thermal, and mechanical property parameters of the biocomposites were examined using scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, standard differential scanning calorimetry, and typical strength machines. RESULTS: Aliphatic polyurethanes, obtained by the reaction of 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate and polyethylene glycols, were used as modifiers. To check the influence of the glycol molar mass on the properties of the biocomposites, glycols with a molecular weight of 400 and 1000 g/mol were used. New biocomposites based on P3HB were produced with 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt. % content of polyurethane by direct mixing using a twin-screw extruder. The following property parameters of the prepared biocomposites were tested: degradation temperature, glass transition temperature, tensile strength, impact strength, and Brinell hardness. CONCLUSIONS: Improvement of the processing property parameters of P3HB-biocomposites with the addition of aliphatic polyurethanes was achieved by increasing the degradation temperature in relation to the degradation temperature of the unfilled P3HB by over 30 °C. The performance property parameters have also been improved by reducing the brittleness compared to the P3HB, as evidenced by the increase in impact strength and the decrease in hardness with an increase in the amount of polyurethane obtained by the reaction of 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate and polyethylene glycol with a molecular weight of 400 g/mol (PU400) as modifier.

In spite of the continuous improvement in our knowledge of the nature of cancer, the causes of its formation and the development of new treatment methods, our knowledge is still incomplete. A key issue is the difference in metabolism between normal and cancer cells. The features that distinguish cancer cells from normal cells are the increased proliferation and abnormal differentiation and maturation of these cells, which are due to regulatory changes in the emerging tumour. Normal cells use oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in the mitochondrion as a major source of energy during division. During OXPHOS, there are 36 ATP molecules produced from one molecule of glucose, in contrast to glycolysis which provides an ATP supply of only two molecules. Although aerobic glucose metabolism is more efficient, metabolism based on intensive glycolysis provides intermediate metabolites necessary for the synthesis of nucleic acids, proteins and lipids, which are in constant high demand due to the intense cell division in cancer. This is the main reason why the cancer cell does not "give up" on glycolysis despite the high demand for energy in the form of ATP. One of the evolving trends in the development of anti-cancer therapies is to exploit differences in the metabolism of normal cells and cancer cells. Currently constructed therapies, based on cell metabolism, focus on the attempt to reprogram the metabolic pathways of the cell in such a manner that it becomes possible to stop unrestrained proliferation.

BACKGROUND: Cam morphology is thought to originate near puberty and reflects a response of the peripheral aspect of the proximal femoral physis to increased local load. Participation in particular sports activities has been associated with cam morphology in contemporary patient populations; however, it is unclear whether cam is a recent phenomenon. There are limited data regarding the frequency of its occurrence and the general deviations in femoral anatomy in different historical populations. Such information may help to understand the possible influence of lifestyle and diet on cam morphology. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate femoral morphology in three historical populations. We asked: (1) Was cam morphology present in the three study populations, did those populations differ, and were there differences between sexes? (2) Were there differences in neck-shaft angle, version, or inclination between and among the examined populations? METHODS: We examined 204 adult femurs from the Neolithic population from Iran (n = 37, 3000 BC to 1631 BC), medieval population from Poland (n = 135, 10th to 13th centuries), and contemporary Australian aborigines (n = 32, early 20th century), provided by the Open Research Scan Archive, Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica and the University of Wroclaw, respectively. All three human populations represent different chronologic periods and lifestyles. All bones were scanned using CT and then measured on their three-dimensional (3-D) reconstructions in selected planes. Cam impingement was defined as an alpha angle > 55° measured on the inclination view. To evaluate the differences in anatomy between populations, we measured the true neck-shaft angle on the true AP view, apparent neck-shaft angle on the apparent AP view, the version angle on the version view, and the inclination angle on the inclination view. The prevalence of cam morphology and other anatomic parameters were compared among groups using chi-square test, one-way ANOVA with post hoc Tukey test, and paired t-test. RESULTS: Cam morphology was present in 5% of the Neolithic population from Iran, in 7% of the medieval population from Poland, and 3% of the contemporary Australian aborigine femurs (OR Neolithic population from Iran/the medieval population from Poland 0.7 [95% CI 0.2 to 3.4]; p = 0.67; OR Neolithic population from Iran/contemporary Australian aborigines 1.8 [95% CI 0.2 to 20.5]; p = 0.65; OR the medieval population from Poland/contemporary Australian aborigines 2.5 [95% CI 0.3 to 20.1]; p = 0.40). There were differences in the presence of cam morphology between the sexes in the medieval population from Poland with both femurs (females: 1% [1 of 76]; males: 15% [9 of 59]; p = 0.002). There was a difference in true neck-shaft angle between the Neolithic population from Iran (121° ± 6°) and contemporary Australian aborigines (131° ± 5°; mean difference 10° [95% CI 7° to 13°]; p < 0.001) and between the medieval population from Poland (124° ± 5°) and the contemporary Australian aborigines (mean difference 7° [95% CI 5° to 9°]; p < 0.001). Apparent neck-shaft angle differed between the Neolithic population from Iran (126° ± 6°) and the contemporary Australian aborigines (134° ± 5°; mean difference 8° [95% CI 6° to 11°]; p < 0.001), and between the medieval population from Poland (126° ± 6°) and the contemporary Australian aborigines (mean difference 9° [95% CI 7° to 11°]; p < 0.001). Moreover, we observed a difference in the version angle between the Neolithic population from Iran (19° ± 7°) and the medieval population from Poland (12° ± 9°; mean difference 7° [95% CI 4° to 10°]; p < 0.001] and in the inclination angle between aforementioned groups (18° ± 7° versus 11° ± 8°; mean difference 7° [95% CI 5° to 10°]; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study found that cam morphology existed in historical populations at rates comparable with a contemporary population. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The presence of cam morphology in historical populations suggests that cam morphology can develop outside of the intense sports activity seen in modern adolescents. Further study will help elucidate the etiology of cam morphology, which may be useful in the development of preventive strategies.
