RESUMO

Fatty acids (FA) are the main constituents of lipids and oil crop waste, considered to be a promising 2G biomass that can be converted into ketenes via catalytic pyrolysis. Ketenes are appraised as promising synthons for the pharmaceutical, polymer, and chemical industries. Progress in the thermal conversion of short- and long-chain fatty acids into ketenes requires a deep understanding of their interaction mechanisms with the nanoscale oxide catalysts. In this work, the interactions of fatty acids with silica are investigated using a wide range of experimental and computational techniques (TPD MS, DFT, FTIR, in situ IR, equilibrium adsorption, and thermogravimetry). The adsorption isotherms of linear and branched fatty acids C1-C6 on the silica surface from aqueous solution have been obtained. The relative quantities of different types of surface complexes, as well as kinetic parameters of their decomposition, were calculated. The formation of surface complexes with a coordination bond between the carbonyl oxygens and silicon atoms in the surface-active center, which becomes pentacoordinate, was confirmed by DFT calculations, in good agreement with the IR feature at ∼1680 cm 1. Interestingly, ketenes release relate to these complexes' decomposition as confirmed by the thermal evolution of the absorption band (1680 cm-1) synchronously with the TPD peak of the ketene molecular ion. The established regularities of the ketenezation are also observed for the silica-induced pyrolysis of glyceryl trimyristate and real waste, rapeseed meals.

RESUMO

The present study focuses on using apricot seeds shells and walnut shells as a potential renewable material for biorefinery in Ukraine. The goal of the research work was to determine the relationship between the chemical composition of solid residues from biomass after acid pretreatment with H2SO4, alkaline pretreatment with NaOH, and a steam explosion pretreatment and the recovery of sugars and lignin after further enzymatic hydrolysis with the application of an industrial cellulase Cellic CTec2. Apricot seeds shells and walnut shells consist of lots of cellulose (35.01 and 24.19%, respectively), lignin (44.55% and 44.63%, respectively), hemicelluloses (10.77% and 26.68%, respectively), and extractives (9.97% and 11.41%, respectively), which affect the efficiency of the bioconversion of polysaccharides to sugars. The alkaline pretreatment was found to be more efficient in terms of glucose yield in comparison with that of acid and steam explosion, and the maximum enzymatic conversions of cellulose reached were 99.7% and 94.6% for the solids from the apricot seeds shells and the walnut shells, respectively. The maximum amount of lignin (82%) in the residual solid was obtained during the processing of apricot seed shells submitted to the acid pretreatment. The amount of lignin in the solids interferes with the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis. The results pave the way for the efficient and perspective utilization of shells through the use of inexpensive, simple and affordable chemical technologies, obtaining value-added products, and thus, reducing the amount of environmental pollution (compared to the usual disposal practice of direct burning) and energy and material external dependency (by taking advantage of these renewable, low-cost materials).

RESUMO

Polymer waste of light industry and other industries is processed by chemical recycling and mechanical grinding. Modern equipment for polymer waste processing has the following drawbacks: significant energy consumption and reduced performance properties of recycled polymer. New technological processes and equipment for polymer waste recycling have been developed for the manufacture of light industry polymer products with increased performance characteristics. The manufacturing of such products was made possible by the development of the mathematical model, which describes the movement of a mixture of main polymer material and particles of recycled polymer waste in the process of filling a mold cavity. The model, in contrast to the existing models, allows observing the formation of the polymer product structure containing recycled waste particles. Improvement in the performance characteristics of shoe soles made by the injection molding of a mixture of polyvinylchloride and particles of recycled polyvinylchloride was confirmed by experimental tests of breaking strength and fatigue life. The results of these tests can be used in the design of processing equipment to obtain waste particles of the required shape and size and in the design of molds to provide the required concentration and orientation of waste particles in light industry polymer products.

RESUMO

Lignin processing products have an extensive using range. Because products properties depend on lignin precursor quality it was interesting to study lignin isolated from rice husk being a large tonnage waste of rice production and its structural transformations during carbonization. Lignin isolated by the thermal hydrolysis method with H2SO4 1 wt % solution and its carbonized products prepared under different carbonization conditions were characterized using elemental analysis, IR, TPD-MS, XRD, TEM, and EPR. It was shown lignin degradation takes place over the wide (220-520 °C) temperature range. Silica presenting in lignin affects the thermal destruction of this polymer. Due to the strong chemical bond with phenolic hydroxylic group it decreases an evaporation of volatile compounds and as a result increases the temperature range of the lignin degradation. Rice husk hydrolytic lignin transformations during carbonization occur with generation of free radicals. Their concentration is decreased after condensation of aromatic rings with carbon polycycles formation, i.e., the graphite-like structure. Quantity and X-ray diffraction characteristics of the graphite-like phase depend on carbonization conditions. Morphology of the lignin-based carbonized products is represented by carbon fibers, carbon and silica nanoparticles, and together with another structure characteristics provides prospective performance properties of lignin-based end products.

RESUMO

Valeric acid is an important renewable platform chemical that can be produced efficiently from lignocellulosic biomass. Upgrading of valeric acid by catalytic pyrolysis has the potential to produce value added biofuels and chemicals on an industrial scale. Understanding the different mechanisms involved in the thermal transformations of valeric acid on the surface of nanometer-sized oxides is important for the development of efficient heterogeneously catalyzed pyrolytic conversion techniques. In this work, the thermal decomposition of valeric acid on the surface of nanoscale SiO2 , γ-Al2 O3 , CeO2 /SiO2 , Al2 O3 /SiO2 and TiO2 /SiO2 has been investigated by temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD MS). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) has also been used to investigate the structure of valeric acid complexes on the oxide surfaces. Two main products of pyrolytic conversion were observed to be formed depending on the nano-catalyst used-dibutylketone and propylketene. Mechanisms of ketene and ketone formation from chemisorbed fragments of valeric acid are proposed and the kinetic parameters of the corresponding reactions were calculated. It was found that the activation energy of ketenization decreases in the order SiO2 >γ-Al2 O3 >TiO2 /SiO2 >Al2 O3 /SiO2 , and the activation energy of ketonization decreases in the order γ-Al2 O3 >CeO2 /SiO2 . Nano-oxide CeO2 /SiO2 was found to selectively catalyze the ketonization reaction.

RESUMO

Thermochemical studies of hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and their surface complexes are important for the pharmaceutical industry, medicine and for the development of technologies of heterogeneous biomass pyrolysis. In this study, structural and thermal transformations of caffeic acid complexes on silica surfaces were studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, temperature programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD MS) and quantum chemical methods. Two types of caffeic acid surface complexes are found to form through phenolic or carboxyl groups. The kinetic parameters of the chemical reactions of caffeic acid on silica surface are calculated. The mechanisms of thermal transformations of the caffeic chemisorbed surface complexes are proposed. Thermal decomposition of caffeic acid complex chemisorbed through grafted ester group proceeds via three parallel reactions, producing ketene, vinyl and acetylene derivatives of 1,2-dihydroxybenzene. Immobilization of phenolic acids on the silica surface improves greatly their thermal stability.

RESUMO

Temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD MS) was used to study the pyrolysis of PDMS and its composites with nanosized silica and ceria/silica. The results suggest that the elusive organosilicon compound, dimethylsilanone, is generated from PDMS over a broad temperature range (in some cases starting at 70 °C). The presence of nano-oxides catalyzes this process. Ions characteristic of the fragmentation of dimethylsilanone under electron ionization are assigned with the aid of DFT structure calculations. Possible reaction mechanisms for dimethylsilanone generation are discussed in the context of the calculated kinetic parameters. Observed accompanying products of PDMS pyrolysis, such as tetramethylcyclodisiloxane and hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane, indicate that multiple channels are involved in the dimethylsilanone release.

RESUMO

In this study, chemical transformations of benzyl ester of О-(phenyl-2-acetamido-2,3-dideoxy-1-thio-ß-d-glucopyranoside-3-yl)-d-lactoyl-l-alanyl-d-isoglutamine (SPhMDPOBn) on the fumed silica surface were examined, and the surface complex structure was characterized by temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD-MS), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and electrospray ion trap mass spectrometry (ES IT MS). Stages of pyrolysis of SPhMDPOBn in pristine state and on the silica surface have been determined. Probably, hydrogen-bonded complex forms between silanol surface groups and the C = O group of the acetamide moiety NH-(CH3)-C = O…H-O-Si≡. The thermal transformations of such hydrogen-bonded complex result in pyrolysis of SPhMDPOBn immobilized on the silica surface under TPD-MS conditions. The shifts ∆ν of amide I band (measured from 1,626 to 1,639 cm(-l) for SPhMDPOBn in pristine state) of 33 and 35 cm(-l) which occurred when SPhMDPOBn was immobilized on the silica surface may be caused by a weakening of the intramolecular hydrogen bonding of the SPhMDPOBn because the interaction with the silica surface as hydrogen bond with silanol groups is weaker than that in associates.
